After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Wifi/hotspots in cafes?

Hi guys - just a question for cafe owners - what's the status of the wifi thing [wireless hotspots] in cafes? There used to be a few vendors pushing this, but it doesn't seem to have taken off like in the US - where you walk into many inner city cafes, and everyone is sitting down, immersed in their i-Pad or laptop;

  • I rarely go to a cafe but when I do its to escape and part of my escapism is online activities.  Not many, just news, email, eBay, here and FB.  It used to be a newspaper or a magazine, how times have changed!
  • Well, we do have and offer wi-fi to the patrons in our coffee house, but most dont seem to take it up. I think many are coming in for the social thing and, we see quite a few in for biz meetings, so we dont often see individuals with their noses in their pooders  ;) The ones that do bring their pooders, often have their own connections.... the old stick in the side of the laptop thingo. Maybe its a security thing, as in they dont trust someone elses freely provided connection????????? And I guess every coffee house / cafe is an individual thing with clients coming through for different reasons not all of them being to surf the net by themselves (its not very social). That's just our experience.
  • I offer free wireless to customers - but I also have no hesitation in bumping tables when the same person has been sitting on one coffee for hours and its a busy lunch period - and we have dedicated window bench seating just for this reason - its also pretty handy for us when it comes to paying bills and accessing documents online etc...
