After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Custom Resin Handles

edited August 2012 in Accessories
I had fellow member Derrilex do some prototypes of some PF handles and 2 Lever handles in Resin
I know Crema members like photos so I will let the photos tell a thousand words

And will answer questions as they come

  • Photos of custom handles on machine The black end caps are to match the steam and water toggles KK
  • Now they really are dildo handles  Seriously though I like them better than the wood ones, gorgeous colours :) I know who is making the lever handles for me (well when I get a lever) :D
  • KK, the kitchen looks good. The resin handles aren't bad either ;)
  • KK, can we have a photo of your kitchen now that it's complete! ;) Wow, very nice handles.  This just opens a whole new way to customise your machine.  You could get rather funky colours, with a machine tamper stand and coaster too eh!  Sweet. @D, just out of interest are these as strong as original handles?  I was thinking more of a lever handle where you are pulling down.  Also did you use inserts or does the group handle just screw straight into the resin?
  • There is a 75 mm stainless threaded cup head bolt ( with the cup head cut off but retaining the 12 mm square section) embedded in the resin - the bolt is secured in the mould and the resin poured around it. So yes, its as strong as the originals. I like to call the KKCADD - or KK's Candy Apple Donkey Dicks   Man it felt so wrong working with the lever handles. Got a very odd look from one neighbour and had to go over and show him what it was so he didnt think I was running a dildo manufacturing business
  • A few pics I took before delivery

You never know, it could open up a whole new market for you. Lever handles by day, dildoes by night.
  • LOL those photos you put up D they look incredibly suss haha
  • I'm just about to pour a blank for you to play with AM.  :thumb:
  • Machine it and use it - call it field testing  It's 140 long and 48 D

I cant take the credit for the shapes as they were moulded from KK's timber originals
  • Let me just quash some of the adhoc descriptions made on some posts above The design is to be seen in ones minds eye "As an ATOMIC mushroom cloud " That's the original inspiration Now a user report after day one Handles feel wonderful to the touch and the grip is secure Heat is not an issue Can take water better than timber KK

Oh Yeah... Right... Nothing phallic goin on here eh?  Right? You start rubbing those handles... And well I'm outta here.... All we need now is a shot of a few dribbles of freshly steamed milk and we'll need an "over 18" classification to join the forum... Worst thing is I'm actually drawn to touch them myself :freaky One question... Where do the batteries go in?

Either the molds were supplied by Cynthia Plaster Caster or Viagra has branched into espresso machine design
  • I take it that you are all a little jealous  :stir The mould was made from the original wodden handles that I have been using Its just the timber that it was turned from was a little brittle and was showing grain flaws in it's structure The Atomic mushroom cloud design has been in use for a few months As it is a PITA to make the steam toggle handles I decided to leave them as they are and add black tips to the ends of the PF & lever handles to blend in and match them They look good don't they :D KK
  • Mmmmm I wanted to say they probly look better... in the flesh... But somehow that's a bit hands on... Oops... I don't think you'll be short of conversation starters.... Not to mention late night party games... What can I say but yours is definitely bigger than mine! Enjoy!

The steam toggles are  Too small?
  • Yep... Me want!  And a couple of inserts for my steam valves.  And a knobfor my lever. I'll have a chat when I pick up the stand mate.  Looks awesome but the wife doesnt want that shape adorning the kitchen.  Ours is a man kitchen as it is and doesn't need the competition
  • Times like these I'm glad I don't have a lever  as I dont need the competition either Brett :D

How about a teaser with photos of the coffee station area (Please note still to go before fully completed is a coat of new paint) Bezzera Strega and Grinder Attachment not found.Attachment not found.Attachment not found.
  • You could call the lever handles big ted and little ted - depending upon the size of the machine - its ok, you can thank me later    but they do look great by the way - are the portafilter handles a standard fit for most machines? I'd love to see one cast in the same mold as the new la marzocco handles which are form fitting and on quite an angle (but are a one piece construction I believe which incorporates the basket holder end of the pf)

Thanks, never thought of naming them After a week of daily use, they feel as if I have been using them forever As to the new LM handles you should post a picture KK
  • How much control do you have over swirls, stripes and other colour features D? Can you do pinstripes? Barbershop swirls? ;)
  • No real control over swirls Kelsey. Layering of colours is do able. No barber shop spirals or pin stripes :D
  • Can you do a nice bright colours with some beans floating about inside?  Or does that stuff up the strength of the handle?
  • If you laminate up a square blank with contrasting timbers you definitely get a striking pinstripe effect. (just turn it up as a solid timber blank). Alternatively, you could easily do a string inlay with a contrasting timber or even silver or gold inlay if you want top shelf bling. There are many options to consider. You could for example cut alternate wedges in contrasting timber and glue them back into a solid round, then machine as normal. This would give a very even pin striping effect. Lots of options, none too hard to execute either....
  • They look cool - ish AM. You could machine up a pair of leopard print undies for Mrs AM  :P :P
  • Just had a look at the ivory website. Interesting. I'd love to know how they cast the patterns with such consistency. Then again, to me, they look very "controlled" - a bit too symmetrical and "manufactured". Where is the art ?

As you say Ol Grumpy; don't try and sell a product; find a product that EVERY ONE WANTS and provide a quality one.
Yes, but there's a difference between 'hobby work' and 'work for profit' too eh? Although, i surely agree there's little point makin stuff no one wants... The key to selling boutique stuff is to 'sell the story', *not* the product. For example some years ago, in Melbourne, a very successful boutique furniture maker used to sell his dining tables with the headline... "This Table will last 100 years.... Underwater" And he told a very compelling story of the incredible history of the timber and how every notch and nick had its own story to tell..... It was just a table like any other table- even made from second hand timber.... And nicely over priced too... But he always sold out because people bought 'the story' Stories are *the* most powerful yet under rated selling tool... There ya go AM, there's another 1liner for you.... Me, I get the most satisfaction from long curly shavings peeling off my custom Gidgee smoothing plane... But that's not what I do for a living..... Just for fun.... OG
  • Only problem is coffee people are generally not that stupid
