Fast extraction

Hi All,

Ive been around the fringes for some time now with stove tops and syphons, but I recently bought a Lelit PL41 Plus ( single boiler with PID control) and a Breville smart grinder BCG 800 -

Thing is I cannot get a double shot (60ml) extraction in 25 seconds in fact I am twice as fast, I use the grinder set to its  finest setting, amount of coffee to the mark on the group handle ( 58mm Group), Tamp pressure measured on the bathroom scale to 15 kG - and Im running out of variables.

The coffee isnt bad its just not text book..I seem to be so far out with my timer that any variables are nonsensical to me anyway.

Finished (settled, tamped) level in the coffee filter will be around say...6mm-ish  below the very TOP of the filter. If so, and your grinder is set on the finest setting then I am thinking this is one of those grinders that is not set up correctly on the production line. Read somewhere (one of these forums) that early grinders of this type required "shimming" to get them to grind in the correct range.....

I addition to Fresh Coffees answer Grinder is not grinding fine enough Not correct tamp depth level If you have the correct tamp depth then try a gorilla tamp to overcome the course grind and see how that goes KK

Hi there Springbok.  Go to http://www.breville.com.au/support and give them a call.  I believe that they will post you a shim kit with instructions for no additional cost. Let us know how you go mate.  Have you anyone you can borrow a grinder from to test?

Yes Kelsey - "Fresh as" Although reading on the BCG800 thread from some time ago - I realise that I did have the grinder make a strange noise about 6 weeks ago and it turned out to be a chip of stome - I removed it and thought the grinder was working ok after that - its only recently that Ive been trying to do the proper espresso extraction and hence the problem is showing up.. Ive sent away to Breville for the shims and will see what that does. Cheers,
