After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Collective Nouns

UNMUNM
edited January 1970 in Espresso Machines
Another thread started me thinking about coffee related collectve nouns.

What are accepted collective nouns? What else is needed?

I like one I found 'a froth of baristi'.

I think espresso machines should share the same collective noun as bishops 'a bench of  espresso machines' just sounds right.

Others?

  • One taken from some black birds A gathering of some ladies and gentlemen taking a class to learn about coffee and how to use an espresso machine The noun is taken from a murder of crows And reworded to say a murder of students KK
  • An interesting one that always leaps to the fore for me is the plural of "Octopus". While "Octopi" is still technically correct, so is "Octopuses". Something about its Greek origins rather than Latin.

A few words come from Greek The reason or this is, - Latin at that time did not have a word for Octopus and possibly never knew of its existence KK

Actually, because of its Greek roots, octopuses is technically correct. The '-i' pluralization only applies to words with Latin roots like radius,  stimulus, cactus (though mainly because its botanical Latin) but not to words like focus,  minus, platypus
  • I like to refer to a gaggle of baristi and a stunned mullet of customers ...
