Out of interest, and I know this will probably sound like a stupid question, but, why wouldn't you use the single spout to pour a double into a single cup instead of a double spout?

I can remove the basket from the group handle, so I just put the double basket into the single group handle.  Whichever group handle I don't use, always has the blind filter in it, so I can quickly backflush when I want to.

Question time Back flush ? Why? Where does it back flush to? Should we all be doing this or only on certin machines Sorry if i don't ask, i dont find out Cheers Mark

Backflushing is simply using a blind filter to clean out the lines in your machine and also the shower head.  If your machine has a solenoid valve, you can backflush, otherwise I think it's not possible. At least that's my understanding. I try to keep the showerhead clean for every extraction.  Since I only make coffee at home, I have all the time I need, there's no rush. In a commercial setting, this isn't feasible due to demand, unless your goal is to serve every cup with an optimal shot.

Nunu, I am not 100% sure I understand what you mean, but what I was asking was whether it would be suitable to use the double basket in the filter holder with the single spout when extracting into one cup? Cheers P

i can;t be bothered changing the blind filter around. thats my only reason.

When using the single spout with a double basket, it's a bit hard to get the tamp right for me, since the spout doesn't sit flat on the bench like the double spout does. I meant to elaborate in the first post, but it seems I got off the track with the blind filter bit  :P Go the A.D.D.!

the reason that you should use a double spout for a double shot is scienific it has all to do with the amount of the coffee within the basket and the flow of the water through it if one spout is used it tends to slow this flow down thus burning the coffee

kingcoffeecoffee, I can't imagine that's correct because the proper extraction for a double is for a volume of espresso (say 60ml) in a certain period of time (say 25 seconds). As a result, the single spout must have twice the volume coming through it as each of the double spouts. Regards, Gary

Patrick, I would. Before I went bottomless, I'd use a single spout for any double shot. The only time I'd use the double spout is if I was splitting it into two cups. If you aren't going bottomless, the best single spout (IMO) is the straight one. Regards, Gary
