After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
Trends in the Australian Market?
There have been a number of posts about Starbucks' fortunes in Australia, but interestingly, no-one seems to know how the highest-profile chain is going here.
FYI - we have put in a couple of calls to interview their new marketing manager, but so far they have declined to respond, which is usually a sign that things are not going well (given that in the corporate world, when things are going well, you can't get them off the phone!)
Before he left (resigned, was fired?) I had an interview with Charlie Baker, now ex-CEO of Starbucks Aust. who on two occasions, declined to answer when I questioned him on Starbucks' expansion plans for this market. I took that as a sign that things were not going as well as they'd hoped. My guess is that as they're struggling to expand in this market they've decided to consolidate and focus on key stores in prime retail locations, to give them maximum branding exposure.
They've also bought in a new Marketing Mgr from the US, so expect a plethora of 'marketing-type' initiatives (as opposed to improving coffee quality) - have seen the first of those today, as their PR people mailed me one of their new 'Starbucks-cards' - a plastic card like a smart card, which stores up credits and allows you to spend in their stores.
Other initiatives out of the US will probably follow, such as the ability to purchase a selection of your favourite music tracks (online) inside Starbucks stores...just a shame about the coffee!
