ALDI - Serving up Golden Beans

Well I got the Aldi pamphlet today and see the Wednesday specials has all the coffee gear init.

This inlcudes a new 250g baggy of Bronze Golden Bean called Lazzio Espresso Coffee.  Aldi quote "Aldi was the only supermarket to receive an award" from over 1100 coffees.....

Grinder if you want one for a lazy $30:

  • I'm sure there were not 1100 entries in their category.........love how marketing words can be twisted.
  • How do the Golden Bean results work, does everyone get a bronze if they don't get silver or gold?
  • Do they promise to have the roasted on date on the bag?  They can be Platinum beans for all I care but they'll be horrible if they're old or if a delivery driver leaves them in the sun!

doesn't seem like twisting things. If over 1100 coffees entered in golden bean and only one supermarket won an award, then totally true. Not that it has much relevance to me. My coffees have never won an award, but I am happy with what I roast. Wouldn't go near that grinder. I looked last time it was on special and decided not even worth taking home to try and then return later for refund.
  • Perhaps you only get a medal if you also send a representative for the convention.

Entering competitions in the first place is also a requirement.  I have no need of that validation. Besides, got to give someone else a chance, wouldn't really be fair to upstage them all.
  • I've got some golden beans at home as well - and I roasted them myself! But if you rub them too hard all the texta comes off ...
  • Okay... Here goes... bought 250g of Lazzio Il Espresso Whole Beans medium dark roast Uganda Mt Elgon (60%) Columbia Excelso (40%).  Roast is lighter more like medium but the bean colour/density/uniformity seems superb.  These are actually fresh (purchased western suburbs brisbane 26/3/2013) but the lack of roasted on label and the subsequent best before 2015 is disappointing.  As a French press this was sweet and delicious and as an espresso with the temp of the machine at 95 it was good.  GO FiGURE!  We are lucky here in Australia in that we get excellent quality greens consistently imported, excellent calibur professional roasters generally and access to information that has previously precluded many. These beans a drinking well now!  Ill save some for next Wednesday and we'll see how they hold up but I feel as though they are already at least one week old judging by their smell, taste and reaction to then water in the plunger.  I've a video of an extraction and a bad picture with flash inside the bag.  LISTEN UP ALDI... Well done!  Now put a roast date on them, check your supply/storage procedure and you'll actually have a product better than any supermarket!  To do all that and maintain consistency I fear the cost will quickly blow over what artisan roasters are charging and given a choice I'd always spend my money with the latter! N.b.  My wife didn't like the taste of these at all despite her loving much that is Aldi.  Too bright and acidic for is my guess but this is a personal taste not a roast defect. 64C971A9-053E-4DA0-9B5C-94BA4B97B79C-9089-00000724782362BE_zps06203a04.jpg [embed=425,349]

Yep!  If I can be assured of their freshness I would add them to my list of back-up supplies any day!
  • Was there any info on the bag as to where they were packed ? ..Australia ? Other aldi beans i have seen were packaged in  Germany .
  • Roasted in Oz, but dont get your hopes up as they dont appear to have any continuity of supply.
