Where to start?

I'm a newbie here so please go easy on me

I'm keen to get into making better coffee at home and have already bought myself the Sunbeam grinder.

I was all set to get the EM6900 for making the espresso but am now undecided having read in a number of places the faults with the units.

I started looking at the Rancilio Silvia and have chased a few on eBay to start 2nd hand but now considering buying new.

My question is what machine should I start with. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get plenty of use out of it but I don't want to go for the Sunbeam and lust after another unit.

My other question would be where to buy from as there seems to be a big price difference on some models. eBay seems to be the best bet for the Silvia at $670 + shipping (capebyronaustralia).

Buyer beware: Its not $670.00 at all....there is a $50.00 postage fee, and NO insurance. Read the add closely. A reputable rancilio dealer or importer will sell at a fair price ( for hime as well as for the client) and give proper service without restoring to bull dusting clients. Firstly, a reputable dealer will not discount to a ridiculous figure where they dont make any money / then add a stupid delivery cost to try & claw some margin back. Real delivery cost to most metro areas is under $20.00 / and the total WILL include insurance to safeguard against loss or damage during the delivery. Secondly...at that price it is most UNlikely the vendor will do any work for their sale (work means time & time is money)...so most likely you will get a machine in a box that's not had a pre delivery check here in Oz. How would you like to receive a machine that's DOA (dead on arrival) that should have been picked up on a pre delivery check before despatch? What do you do then, pay to send back? Thirdly / if you take one of their package deal offers on machine & grinder following the above it is most unlikley the grinder will have been set up & run and adjusted to suit the machine. Bet you sdont know how to do that....so what to do after you receive the goods you dont know how to use.....ring the internet for service? Please dont support silly discount schemes where you give someone money, but get no service. Deal with someone who will spend the time to set up test, adjust, deliver & insure and / yes be prepared to pay them for their time. Silvia / rocky are the best domestics around but they are very finicky to set up & to learn how to use properly. They are not equipemnt that you sell at rock bottom price with NO service. G.

I'm happy to look at alternative sources for this but you've not made any suggestions. Who should I be dealing with? As above, I already have a grinder so I'm just in the market for the espresso machine. Thanks, Chri

Hello Chris, In the absence of others here volunteering their services, I wish to advise that my company is also a direct importer and seller of Rancilio Silvia machines.

If you don't have any luck with the above, I can recommend coffee-a-roma on e-bay, I bought a Rancillio Rocky grinder from them, as have several of my mates, and have found their communication and after sales service to be fine and dandy. Also, many local  coffee suppliers are happy to service domestic machines if need be at a reasonable cost. ACG
