After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Give Your Coffee a Rating - Is it a 9.5/10 ?

                                                THE COFFEE RATING THREAD

Ok .. just how good is your coffee? .. well, here's your chance of a lifetime to share the joy - as to just how chuffed you are about what you are able to produce - using you current equipment.

*No need to be modest .. or shy .. give us your best shot .. or your worst?

* Pictures of successes .. or failures - are all welcome.

* How is that new batch of green beans that you have roasted going .. as good as the last batch?

* How would you rate the coffee you are now getting .. compared to your last coffee machine .. grinder?
It has improved .. but by how much?

* How was that last shot .. was it a sinker .. average - 8/10 .. exceptional 9.5/10

What rating would you give..

* Sinker - ?
* Ordinary - ?
* Average - ?
* Good - ?
* Very good - ?
* Excellent - ?
* Stunning - ?

  • I dont bother with a granular rating system like that, using a large commercial lever (Izzo Pompeii) and an HG One grinder with my own blended and roasted beans, i dont make bad coffee......ever! What i do know is that I have made coffees for hundreds of friends, visitors and clients, no one has every told me that have had a better coffee anywhere else and everyone to a person reckons that its great coffee. I dont take a lot of credit for the result, great equipment and freshly roasted beans is about 90% of the result I reckon. Once I had dialled in my dosing, grind, temperature and extraction ratio its really a set and forget process. Sometimes I will roast an SO for myself and maybe apply a little fine tuning to get the best out of it. Interestingly I have a control machine to confirm my setup on the Izzo, the little Caravel actually makes slightly better shots IMO and thats my standard to test against.
  • I have made a few 9's on my machine and I'm disappointed with myself if I don't make a 6 at least. All friends reckon I make the best coffee they've had (except those who have been to the place named below :D) and my chai latt
  • Hi journeyman It would be handy to match your ratings with your equipment. You can add what gear you're using to the bottom of all your posts by going to.. Profile (top) > Forum profile > scroll down to Signature and fill in. Then click on 'change profile' button (bottom R/S cnr)

    ^ I hadn't thought of posters actually putting in their own rating for each level on that list. It does give us an indication of where you are coming from .. when rating your own coffees.
  • Sitting here with a #7 latt
  • 7's - and below: sink 8's - Mug-of-cino for the guests 9's - Regular scheduled programming but what decimal point determines my level of smugness  >:D Roasting your own beans is so much cheaper that you can afford to be picky!
  • LOL. So a quick and dirty Google suggest, without the roaster, you have $8450+ worth of gear. This might help explain why you can afford to sink anything under a 7. If you would like to clear some room, I would be happy to come and remove some of your equipment at my cost... :D *cheeky grin*

    Lol... I certainly didn't pay those dollars that Google suggests I did.  If anyone wants to give me 8.5k they are welcome to the lot.... Roasters included ;) Yep, I'll concede that my equipment is 'up there' for a domestic setup.  I'd like to think however that it's my dud palate that allows me to se such high standards  :rofl:
  • speaking of Roasting and cup quality  (slightly off topic) I have never tasted a home roast that would compare to top professional roasts Roasting is simple to get decent good coffee, but when we want high scoring cups it becomes very complex, even green storage and import shipping methods play a part in cup quality. I know Jeff will no longer buy SBB  (one of my favorites) green  because Volcafe stopped shipping it in grainpro liners, so it loses cup quality by the time it arrives in the warehouse. what I am saying is there is much more behind the scenes just with the beans before we even consider the brewing equipment.
  • It took me a while ... Sumatran Blue Buttocks!
  • Cosmic couple has sourced a Yirgy according to my request I would say it is some of the best coffee I have had in a long time always pouring 9+  maybe 9.5+  just delicious

    That statement would be a good debate on its own C-man. So many variables in there. From Mini Minors (pan roasted) to the Rolls Royces (Has Garantis etc), the quality of the machine and its driver skills will affect performance. I pass on a couple of my home roasts to a local professional for feedback and have got the thumbs up each time. Mind you, I only offered what I thought was good and none of the not-so-good roasts of which there have been a few....... or more!  :angel: I do however occasionally buy "professionally" roasted in an attempt to keep my taste buds and roast skills on track.

    How very very true and a good point to raise here.
  • I'm drinking a Guatemalan home roast that's as good as any I've paid for.  Perhaps by tastebuds aren't all they should be; however, subjectivity aside the assertion that a home roast can't be as good as the top pro roasts is a statement I disagree with.  I will concede that a home roast can't be as consistently good as a top commercial roaster's product but the stars do align even for the humbe home roaster.
  • The 3 best I've had mycuppas (professionally roasted) - Guatemala ..single origin Jonty's (home roasted) Yirg and Indian TM .. single origins KK's (home roasted Yirg) .. single origin *Jonty's were as ugly as sin .. but in the cup were sensational. Being a very dark roast & oily .. these couldn't be sold commercially like that. Home roasters can be more experimental and take risks. So .. in my experience so far .. home roasted beans are right up there. KK and Jonty have certainly proven to me that the homies can outdo many of the Pros out there roasting for the Commercial brands .. well, err .. according to my taste buds.

    So you have it then?  Where's mine!??????

    ugly doesn't mean a thing, it's whats inside that counts! :)

    Ugly can also be expensive: Yemen for instance sometimes doesn't look like its price tag but wow, in the cup it's sensational!
  • I give my coffee an 8.5 out of 10 - im always searching for the god shot! currently roasting cuba turquino on a corretto getting great results drinking it as a 3/4 latte on my modded rancilio epoca, good hardy industrial machine just started corretto roasting and im getting better results that on my gene cafe and that cost me an arm and a leg - much more even roast with no charring or tipping! P

    Wow... Controversial statement.  I like it!!

    i think the difference is that the corretto has IMHO much better heat retention properties: because its teflon coated the heat is deflected back into the mix where as the glass walls of the gene cafe tend to scold the beans because they're such a good transmitter of heat - not all the time mind you and i still get some excellent results with the gene cafe but I find it much harder to get repeatable results under the same conditions than i do with the gene cafe
