After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Compak K10 PB Collar Mod

edited October 2014 in Grinders
Just a bit of procrastination before I start my lab work today  :P

I received a Compak K10 PB recently and find that the grind adjustment marking is beautiful, but it's close to useless functionally. So here's my little printable mod to share (after a few trial and error). Speaking of which, how many Compak K10 owners are out there? It's a darn sweet grinder suits a home better than a beasty Robur. Build like a tank too.

I thought the mod works pretty well for minor adjustment and doesn't detract from the beauty (unlike some pictures floating on the net  :D )

p/s: not sure if this is okay, there're some k10 on one of the major auction site for a real good price. I reckon it's a superb deal for someone who wants to give Titan Conical a try. Titan conical are unbelievable if you are not a convert already! Consistent fluffly grind aside, the taste is a different beast from small conical/flat (which is very noticable if you're an espresso drinker).

  • Have two of those beauties sitting next to the Robur E for size comparison. One for single origins and the other for "cough" decaf.. They certainly are robust. Can also imagine they are more suitable for home use than the mighty Roburs. [emoji50]
  • Nice equipment there! Certainly K10 makes more sense for home. For one thing, K10 is 18kg and the Robur is at a hefty 28kg. ??? I am not sure if you guys have seen this. But interestingly (for me at least), the K10 shares the exact same burrs with the Robur. Only difference between them is the extra outer collar. Mazzer really do like to overengineer everything. http://www.home-barista.com/grinders/comparisons-between-compak-k10-68mm-mazzer-robur-71mm-burrs-t23332.html

That's heaps better than the fastfood/cafe I visited the other day. I was in a queue and the person in front of me ordered a decaf cappuccino. Guess what, the barista took out a foiled bag(which must have been weeks old) and scooped some coffee ground into the portafilter, and then into the group. Words can't even begin to describe how I felt that time ???
  • :thumb: Thanks for sharing a good idea for K10 owners KK
  • Interesting mod, I have had a couple of K10's and still have one, I have modified them for single dosing and now the remaining one is modified for bag grinding, but I cant say I have ever had an issue with the existing adjustment system.
  • Hi Galumay, Wow, a couple of K10s (at one time)? You're certainly on a different level. :D I reckon it's probably due to different usage pattern. I normally have at least two beans on hand for espresso (and one K10 :P ). It's nice to be able to switch between them and that's to fully take advantage of the single dosing benefit. Admittedly, the sweet spot for Titan Conical burrs is pretty wide so the difference between settings is not too much. Or in your experience you can change beans without making further adjustment? I did not intentionally break in the burrs so not sure if that's affecting anything. So far it's plenty consistent for me.
  • I used mine with my Izzo Pompeii, which being a big commercial lever is a bit more forgiving of grind variation so it was probably less of an issue. Thinking back to when I was using it I think I actually just made a small pen mark which was my setting for my home roasted blend, then if i needed to adjust it was just a bee's d*ck in either direction! The one I have for bag grinding has big ugly permanent maker settings on it! One for espresso and one for french press!! You mod would be a lot more aesthetically pleasing!

That gave me a good chuck! Didn't get that the first time, and even tried imagining it!

That's the point of the mod. You can make B's D worth of adjustment and still come back to it (or in case someone messes up your adjustment) :D
