After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Do you do (The Portafilter jiggle)

edited January 2015 in Espresso Machines
The Portafilter jiggle is a habit I got into very early in my espresso career, a simple practice that goes a long way toward keeping the shower screen and seal clear of used coffee grounds and general gunk.

After, or during a session if you desire, sit the portafilter lightly in place, turn on the brew switch, lever or whatever, then when water begins to flow jiggle the portafilter from light lock to unlock rapidly for a few seconds, works even better with a blind filter.

  • Used to do the jiggle every time on the Minore III but not considered trying it with the Strega. As there's no need to back flush the Strega and hence no need for a blind filter, a flush, wipe and brush is my shutting down procedure now.
  • Yep do the jiggle with a blind at the session end.
  • Your a well educated mob here, most people pull a shot turn the machine off, then walk away and forget until next time. My son in law is a shocker, has a Silvia, pulls a shot , leaves the puck sitting til next session, remove the basket at your peril, the build up of oils and crap is gross, as is the dried milk bulb on the end of the steam wand, takes a day of cleaning the thing whenever I visit to get it to an acceptable condition. What amazes me is that after 5 years the machines still produces very good coffee, when its clean. Don't get me started on his Rocky.
  • I do this every shot do I can wipe the basket clean.  Using a naked pf means that I can keep the bottom of my basket clean!
  • I normally make 3 coffee's every morning, I wipe out the basket with paper towel between shots and at the end of the session do one water backflush and then a jiggle before shutting down. If I'm running late to get out the door I'll skip the backflush and do at least a jiggle. My DC Mini it came with a ridged IMS competition basket that is a pain to get out so I mainly use the rubber disc and don't bother with the actual blind filter.
  • Did the jiggle when I had the Rocket Giotto, but don't really do it with the Londinium (or the PV Lusso for that matter). I tend to do the same as Kevohere when I'm done for the day.

Same procedure here with my PV Lusso
