Dropped the portafilter and scored a direct hit on my right big toe, SOB, do you know how much blood is in one of those things? plenty I can assure you, oh, and the pain factor, yep it was pretty well up there, bugger. :-[

:rofl: I feel for you DB!  I have poor relationship with my toes having broken a number of them on multiple occasions.  Toes hurt like buggary and worse yet, getting them into shoes when you've misyreated them is even less fun!  Perhaps an Irish Coffee to take the edge off??

Your right, however I spent a good part of my life following the OH&S rules dictated by a large Australian company, this sort of thing. Don't misunderstand me, I am a safety conscious person, sadly the combination of early morning and being semi awake colluded to catch me out, hopefully won't happen again. No I ain't wearing steel cap boots, safety glasses, gloves and a helmet to make my morning brew. ::)

I also spent 18 years working for BHP and 11 years of that involved weekly and monthly safety sessions. Despite my considerable knowledge on all things safety, in my own business I have managed to do the following (not very proud of such admissions to be honest):- 1. Fall from the top shelf (which you are not supposed to stand on as it's rated for 15kg) of a mobile gantry - doing a somersault and landing on my back onto the concrete. Bought a lottery ticket afterwards because I should have been dead. My head was fuzzy for days and drew blood on a few limbs. 2. Lowered a pallet holding almost a ton onto my feet twice (same left foot) whilst wearing thongs which was really stupid (it was 40 + deg.). Busted 2 toes - drew blood. 3. In a rush grabbed a 60kg bag of beans from an elevated pallet bay because I did not have time to get the forklift or walkie-stacker, only to have the falling 60kg bag momentum knock me off the ladder (I thought I was far enough away to clear the zone). The things you do in a hurry when your roaster needs to be fed. 4. Still do that NO-NO routine of putting my hands in the cooling tray when the agitator arms are moving - so bad. Squashed my fingers a few times. 5. A stupid truck driver tried to move a truck whilst I was unloading it with a forklift (for reasons I still don't understand) with a 1.3 ton pallet high in the air, the forklift was tilted onto it's side whilst I jumped to safety out on the road. 6. Often re-stacking bags of 69/70kg raw coffee into a pallet on your own - it's just insane trying to get the last few bags up on top - sure there is plenty of internal damage there. 7. In a rush with the walkie-stacker trying to get coffee fast whilst the roaster was on, I turned the hand control the wrong way near a wall and pinned myself up by the ribcage. 8. In a mad rush trying to open bags of raw coffee with a sharp knife - very easy to cut yourself in many places........still happens regularly. Having said that - I am extremely safety aware for my staff - I will not let them do anything remotely dangerous or risky.

As I began reading mycuppa's post, I thought; here's a good idea! A competition to see how many silly/stupid/dangerous thing some (or all) of have done in our (current) lives. However by the time I got to number 5, I quickly realised that here, we already have a winner!  :stir Quote: "Having said that - I am extremely safety aware for my staff - I will not let them do anything remotely dangerous or risky." Hopefully the "monkey see, monkey do" theory will not arise at this workplace :exclaim:  ;D

I had a chef pull a tray of roast vegies out of the oven during a busy service - ?? the tray was choc-a-block with cooking oil - he managed to splash it all over his hand and wrist causing the skin to split right off and 3rd deg burns necessitating a trip to the hospital I for one was riding home from work when I was 18 yrs old and struck by a car travelling at 80km per hr - resulting in 2 months in hospital, 10 month with a cast on my leg - and 2 years using a walking stick ! Have to say I'm I'm pretty good shape all things considered ! P

I worked in a restaurant where a cook was carrying a stock pot full of 180 deg oil and slipped.  Made a mess of his lower leg and foot.  the injury was quite horrific and required a substantial review of our procedures for dropping and disposing of old fryer shortening.  When I think of our workplace practices in that restaurant I'm surprised more of us weren't injured!

Restaurant kitchens are notoriously dangerous places to work, people are going at it with knives and utensils that cut, chop, mangle boil and do any number of things to food and body parts. Obviously slips and falls are up there as well. Not to mention (Brett has) boiling and burning stuff. Used to hear a lot of toddlers pulling boiling pot and pans off the stove on top of themselves, horrific injuries, not so much nowadays, perhaps parents are learning.

However, before my awareness of coffee excellence, an incident involved myself on a Kawasaki GPZ750 (air cooled 1983) and a Land Rover back in 1985. The driver of the Rover was rubber necking at the time before ploughing into my backside at 30kph and sending me hands first into the bitumen. Three broken fingers pointing north west still flailing off the hand which split open spewing out blood, sinews and bone. Hitched a ride on a ambulance which happened to pass by. My partner was a heart attack patient...
