After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

When is it time?????

I know timing is not the only important part but I just wanted to know when the approx 25-30 secends should start from in regards to extracting agood shot?

I am using a sunbeam EM6910 & if lets say I press the single or double button, do I count from when I press the button or after the pre infusion is done?

Thanks in advance for any replies. ;)

  • right from the get-go ...but mainly go by taste ;)
  • Just seems that it runs a little thin towards the end of that time. Should I grind a little finer???????? I see some people stopping short, is that to compensate for a poor tamp/grind? Thanks
  • Cut as soon as you see blonding, pretty well no matter what. early blonding can be a sign of stale coffee, or coffee that is way too fresh (too much or too little CO2 in the bean).  Experiment with your beans at different ages, 3days off the roast, 5, 7, 9, 10, 14, 21, a month, and see what you notice. Also try dosing a little more into the basket.  How do you currently dose/tamp?
  • I have beans from both Coffee roasters (afro java) & allpress (carmelo) both about 5 days since pick up & I couldt get a clear date out of either of them & there is no roast date on the packaging (smells a little stale, sort of sharp). I this the type of thing I should steer clear from? I dose as follows: fill to half & tap 2 or 3 times. Fill again & tap 2 or 3 times. Fill a third time & clean with a flat object ie knife or spoon, tried using my fingers but being in a finishes trade it shits me see an uneven surface (I know its a little compulsive but it works for me) Then tamp & polish with a espro (if its a bit low ill fill again). I seem to get better results doing this rather than dose & tamp repeatedly.
  • try filling once to mildly overflowing, tap once so contents settle, brush off back in to the dosing chamber if necessary, and tamp and polish just the once, then brush off any excess grind from the rim of the portafilter by simplifying your technique you'll be able to remove other variables and fine tune your routinee
