ADSL info please

Not coffee but for coffee!!!!!!!
I am about to toss the dial up service for the net.
Any body have any 'good' experiences with ADSL companies?
Currently use about 300mb per month.

Hi John - depends a little on what telecom carrier you're already with, as they generally offer bundles that give discount if you combine tel. mobile and internet. I have been with Telstra ADSL for about 3 years - used to be unreliable and expensive, now they've got the unreliability sorted out and I think they've come out with a pretty reasonable $29.95 plan. Have seen Optus advertising what looks like a pretty good 'bundle' tel/Mob/internet recently; also have heard the new 'Unwired' wireless service is pretty good. Hope that's of some help. Cheers Lars

Lars Thanks. Strangly enough looked at Telstra tonite and have a friend with the unwired. Waiting for the unwired feedback from her. Telstra $40 per month at 512/128 for 400 mb. Unwired $35 per month at 256/?  for 300 mb As much as I am not a Telstra fan, they seem to be competitive. My current ISP is $65 per month unlimited at 256/? Thanks again John

A friend of mine uses and highly recommends Exetel. The plan I'm considering is $40/month for 8gb at 512/128 There are modem and setup cost to consider as well. whirlpool.net.au is a great place for researching broadband choices. Best of luck with it all.

John, You might also like to consider Cable as opposed to ADSL. I was looking at Adsl but was persuaded to go with cable as it is faster than ADSL. I'm currently with Telstra and they arn't too bad. Just be aware that once you get hooked up your usage will probably increase significantly as you are more likely to download things that were too big to consider with dial up. I think most people who signed up for cheap limited download plans probably end up upgrading. That's probably why they offer them so that people sign up in the first place on a cheap plan and then upgrade to the unlimited plans. I currently pay $59.95 for unlimited cable. Cheers, Rob

I have to add my two cents for Exetel. I've been running a small business with a network and Exetel's $40p/m 512/128 plan has given us no problems for 12months. We never touch our 12GB tranfer limit even though we are a design agency transfering big files. We use the Billion Router/Modem which I think plays a big part in the reliabilty of the service. Adam

Many thanks. I only have one problem. ADSL is apparently not available on my supposed old line. We only got color TV last month!!!! May be have to look at the wireless option instead. John

Time to revive this old thread. I am after some info as I am considering tossing iinet and moving to a naked mynetfone. I have been using mynetfone for VOIP for a couple of years and no problems. I pay $70/month at the moment for 20GB (+20GB offpeak 2am to 8am that doesn't get much use). It also includes several email addresses,  a VOIP number that is for incoming calls and my landline. Options: I can upgrade to 200GB for an extra $10/month with iinet (think I need to commit to two years) I can change to naked - same cost as now and I get 100GB, plus free local and national calls (we typically only use $1 to $3 month on calls). Funny how the $30/month land line rental saving isn't passed on. If I go with mynetfone naked, I get 250GB/month (+ another 250 offpeak midnight to 10am which would see some use) for $59.95, or economy is $49.95 for 100/100GB. They will port in my land line number. They will also give me a free modem for an extra $12.95 (shipping). 12 month contract only. Free Modem is Netcomm NB6Plus4Wn. I can upgrade the modem to an NB9WMAXXn for $49.95. I currently have a Billion 7404VGP-M. So, I am leaning towards a change, despite the loss of a number and email addresses. My current modem would presumably work fine, but is there a benefit in getting either of the discounted options from mynetfone? My wireless coverage at home isn't strong enough to reach the garage or master bedroom, so would the netcomm have a stronger signal? I need three wired network ports for printer and PCs I need two phone lines - currently with PSTN fallback, but obviously that is no longer appropriate. Anyone had experience with the netcomms? Any warnings about going naked and shifting to MNF?

Sorry, I can't speak to your exact questions, but I'm on iinet ADSL2+ naked home 2 (400g) and haven't had a day of trouble. I've got VOIP setup and it works well - particularly with my FritzBox and associated iPhone app, but I don't really use the VOIP much anyway.

I've been with iinet for over 8 years. Not had any problems with service in normal circumstances, but relocations have been a pain (last one involved the ombudsman) and their customer service isn't always the best. My gut feel is that would be par for the course with any telco though.  Mynetfone have likewise been reliable (all our outgoing calls and half incoming go through the VOIP), but not required any service changes or tech support from them.

Yep. Lets you use the iPhone as a VoIP handset - provided you're on the fritz network and the app is running in the background it'll pick up all incoming VoIP calls.

I love it, revive a thread from 2005 about upgrading from dial up.  :rofl: Personally I'm with Internode.  Great tech support, and service, but stuck on Telstra hardware because there are no competitors are the exchange   I'm on a RIM anyway so competition will not hit here until the NBN rolls through. Are you on iinet hardware?  If so they have removed there off peak and now have one lump of data on some plans just like internode.  iinet customer also down get access to all internodes unmeters content too and vice versa for node customers.  Telstra still get paid to rent the line even though its naked, it's just not as much as retail line rental.  Your bundle doesn't sound too bad.  I pay the same and my phone calls aren't free, and I only get 60Gb of data. If your not using 40Gb of data, there is not much point in paying for 200Gb in my opinion.  Consider a lower data allowance to save some cash.

Hey L, going by the thread title, it seemed an appropriate thread. Could have started a new one, but I prefer to reduce, reuse, recycle ;D Will have a quick check at internode. All hardware is mine, except what is at the exchange. Yeah a lot of iinet plans are one lump, my plan is a legacy plan. That note about content is interesting - iinet do offer free abc catchup, which would add some to the monthly data we use. Thing about data (and bandwidth) is that usage increases to meet available capacity. A couple years ago we had 4+4GB and that was enough. Currently leaning to the MNF 100+100GB as it saves $20/month on what we are currently paying and has a cheap upgrade path for when we need it (with media downloads increasing could be pretty soon). Question is whether to stick with the existing billion, or upgrade to either  the netcomm boxfor $60 approx, or an alternate box such as a fritz ($215 for the 7270 or $298 for the 7390 at my local store) Time to do a bit of internet research. Our connection is now back to normal until we run out of data again, so no rush.
