Just ordered a Behmor

This afternoon I finally took the plunge and ordered a Behmor from Bean Green.
Does anyone have any hints/tips/advice?

Get.out!!  This will be 'thread of th year'!!  Kudos for buying from the premium green-bean seller!! Start with 330g roasts on 1lb, P2 and sit next to it watching, listening and using the light to watch the beans (for learnin' and stuff) ready to hit the cool button... for a sure-fire instant gratification winner!  Open the door for the cool cycle and enjoy!  If you have the new tweakable v2 then we expect lots of feedback and pictures!!!

Your enthusiasm is contagious Brett :D. Thread of the year it may well turn out to be, perhaps not for all the right reasons either  :P. I have been tossing the idea over for probably almost 12 months, I promised myself one for Christmas last year but it didn't happen. I took the plunge this arvo so we shall see where it takes me  :-|. Thank you for the figures, it has given me a starting point. I'll keep you posted .

Congrats on the purchase! I've had a Behmor for a couple of years now and I reckon the smells you get during roasting are more addictive than those from preparing coffee. There's a real sense of achievement making coffee using your own beans  ^-^ My tip (for the Plus version) would be to get your mobile phone and set it on an alarm/timer to remind you when the "unattended timer" countdown starts. This is a feature they've built in to require some user input (by pressing the Start button) 75% of the way through a roast - if you don't press the Start button the unit will automatically enter the cooling cycle. For my 300 g roasts, the unattended timer often kicks in just before first crack. It has "got me" on at least one occasion ... I was actually there just watching the beans roll round and round and didn't notice the timer countdown flashing. So, a mobile phone is a good backup to avoid a nasty surprise. To setup the timer on your phone, check the total roast time on the Behmor once you've selected the profile. For 400g-P2-B, the total roast time is 20 minutes. So set your mobile phone timer to 0.75 x 20 = 15 minutes. Start the timer when you start roasting, and hopefully you'll never miss disarming the dreaded auto cool. Hope that helps, Dan.

Dan, that's a great tip.  I had no idea this was an issue with the plus.  Looks like I'm not interested in a plus model because I'd seriously miss it every time  :rofl:

The unattended safety shutdown feature is only an issue when roasting in auto settings on the Plus. Even if I'm using auto I'll still usually hit P2 and C at first crack which will reset the machine if the safety feature has started or it will stop it happening if it hasn't yet started. Another way to reduce the chance of it happening is to add as much time as possible at the start of the roast. So if you're roasting 300g hit the 400 button rather than the 200 and even hit + a couple of times to add time (if it's possible) before you start. That way you'll always hit 1C before the safety feature starts and if nothing else you can hit C at the start of rolling 1C to reset the timer and avoid the safety shutdown.

Thanks Dan . I had read about that feature and although I'll probably be glued to it I' would be dishonest if I said I wasn't worried about missing it. A timer sounds like a good idea so thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the tips Leroy. Admittedly they don't make much sense to me right now but that is because I don't have it in front of me. Once it is and I've had a play I'm sure your advice will all fall into place .

Thanks DB, I am looking forward to it but I am as nervous as all get out too. We're just putting it through the season run now. I got a nice selection of greens with it so I have decide which to try first, PNG Peaberry, Colombia Curazao supremo and Ethiopian Limu so fun times ahead....I hope.

A Colombian is a great place to start, especially a Supremo. Central Americans are often recommended as they are like the control coffees of the coffee world. They tend to do what you expect and a Colombian Supremo is very similar. You'll probably find it'll take 5-10 roasts for things to start to fall into place. The manual will start to make sense as will comments like mine above. Something that I found helpful was printing off the 220v manual from the Behmor website as it'll probably be a bit different to the one you got in the box. It's worth a look anyway. Have fun!!!

Brilliant looking roast for 100gm on the Behmor. No tipping nor scorching. Keep it in the bag for a couple days (if you can wait that long which I doubt [emoji13] ) then taste them each day and note the difference. Am sure 100 gm wont last long and you got the weekend ahead to start roasting again. Try the 200gm setting and see how you go. If anything it should be a better roast at that size batch.
