Shooting ourselves in the foot?

It is often said by coffee lovers and producers, that their mission is to bring good coffee to Australia. That is, to increase the general level of knowledge and appreciation of what makes a quality cup.

If they/we succeed and in the unlikely event that espresso makers country wide start producing reasonably high quality espresso, wont we have initiated our own downfall?

I mean this in the sense that if everyone is producing reasonable coffee, unlike 95% of places that produce crap these days, wont an aspect of product differentiation and competitive advantage be lost?

Hey HS - i guess you're right in theory, but you've also answered your own question - because it is such an 'unlikely event' that the majority of espresso makers will produce high quality espresso, i don't think you've got anything to worry about! Personally it's something i would welcome if even 50% of cafes made high quality espresso. dR

Although, if all those places served average espresso instead of below average, would those of us serving great espresso be forced to lift our game even furthur???
