After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

WANTED - 2nd Hand 1-2kg Roaster

well, its time. Time to branch out from 300g roast batches and continue to stretch my learning by moving up to a larger, drum roaster. Looking for 2nd hand to keep costs down and can't really go over the 1-2kg size as that's all i've really got room for.

I'm in no huge rush, let me know if you hear of anything. Thanks!

yeah, but at $10K + for a new 2kg I may as well just suck it up, buy a 5kg & rent some premises. I hear that the Toper Cafemino is going for around $7K new, gonna go have a look at one in the next fornight or so
  • 10k? For that kind if money I good get me a whizz bang coffee machine, and start trading from my shed!0)
  • initial quotes from Yang Chia Machine Works for the Feima 801n are a bit over USD $5K. That's before shipping etc. I've asked for a price on the EVO version as well. I've gotten some positive feedback from another Feima owner in Australia too. Heading out to look at the Toper tomorrow.
  • My Yang Chia is awaiting customs clearance....

So what did you find ?
well I went and watched a roast on one. I've heard good feedback from other users but have to be honest I didn't like what I saw. One thing in particular, greens pushed flat up against the sightglass and to my (inexperienced) eyes not moving freely or regularly enough. Probably just an issue with how much was loaded but I found it a concern. Also probably not being helped by the fact the only big boys roaster I've been able to get access to so far is a 5kg Probat  ;D ;D
  • I'm cracking open my wooden box tomorrow and hope to do a few roasts on my 800N this week. http://m.plixi.com/p/60558068

While I am yet to see a roast completed on one of these, the Feima models are still in the lead for me. Although I am trying to revert to plan b - get a job that will allow me to access a bigger roaster!

So how is it and what was teh final costs ?
Haven't roasted on it yet, once it quietens down i'll get onto it. Final cost, well you'd need to roast many 100's of kilos to recover the cost but that's not why i bought it, I was after a roaster I could use for my 100g green bean samples yet could still profile roast on for blend development.
