After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Hi all,
I went into wheel and barrow last week to buy some coffee stuff, and i stumbled across a funky little machine.

    Honesty is very important. I happen to think that Nespresso is an excellent way to make coffee. So do many other people of knowledge in the world. They wish they owned the system. Try it with an open mind and if you have deep pockets you might come to the conclusion that that is the way to make coffee. Simple, quick, no mess and a great cup.

    Ristretto, I wasnt advertising for Nestle.  I thought this machine was quite unique and wanted to know what other people thought of it.  I posted the web site for easy access of forum posters and to get their opinion on this product. Do you have any views on this product, regardless of its creators? Chicksta

    Chicken, Had a nespresso in a city office, frothed some milk and enjoyed a fairly mild flavoured Latte, impressed the workers with some deft coffee making though. Ristretto  8)

    as you said, impressed by the coffee making skills as opposed to the machine what happens when you buy one and next week the corporate machine known as NESTLE make a better one and discontinue making nespresso sachets???? I guess they don't know this stuff at Wheel and barrow...

    I saw the factory while in Europe and all I can say is I don't like your chances of it slowing down, they have just doubled the size of thier factory.... :) Bring on the pod No mess No Fuss Just great coffee every time ILR

    Sad day... ??? ??? ??? On a more positive note: your thoughts on those so called cafe operators that have their machines converted to take pods? What do you think of the taste? Is the cleanliness a worthwhile trade off for the taste changes that must come from use of such a product? Worth the money or not?

    Gruva, Nothing can replace the taste of freshly ground well made espresso based coffees.  How many cafe operators can do this well? Probably not many.   Now to the business side of the equation: at $0.40+ per serving for pods, it is not profitable to reduce the margin by so much and expect to remain a long term proposition. As for the taste, hard to tell really, they seem ok but with so many other factors affecting the flavour these could be better or worse than a fresh extraction. Ristretto  8)

    Mr Ristretto... thanks, your opinion sounds well researched. It does appear that the pod users I know of are more concerned about cost than taste and this would be a reflection of the coffee their cafe produces. With many coffee companies suggesting that a coffee should cost the cafe operator between 50 and 60 cents I can see why Illy is the only company know that has the pods. What about the capsules (by Lavazza, I think) that I have heard of?

    The problem with capsules as I see it is that they have all been pre-ground some time ago, whereas the freshest grind possible provides maximum extraction and maximum flavour. Also, I am loath to support a multinational who is, in my opinion at least, one of the key factors in keeping the cost of raw ingredients relatively low, at the expense of the poor guy who grows the crops. But my biggest grudge against the humble pod would have to be that it eliminates the art and hands on expertise of the barista. If I haven't made it happen with my own two hands (or one hand, if you happen to be an amputee), then it didn't happen. And grinding your own coffee is also an art-form that should not be left to chance.  I want the option of choosing my own beans from whomever I like and then grinding them to order! ACG
