After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

technic concept art - red tamper

edited January 1970 in Accessories
Hi Guys I've got a few tamps but I've but I've been loving the above one for its eveness and consistency in tamping - but the hydraulic aspect of the tamper has frozen and wont budge

this is a great item for my staff to use so we're all on the same page when it comes to even tamp pressure - but if the hydraulics arent working then it might as well be a paper weight

ideas anyone?

cheers,

ACg

  • No luck with the tamper - stripped it cleaned it lubed it and it's still a brick!
  • thanks anger not sure about the locktight - certainly no one at my work would've done it, I dont think! any photo's available for a better understanding as to what has happened? look forward to having it back in action as its one of my favourite tampers and I'll take it up with my staff as to how its treated - either that or I take it home with me at the end of each shift! thanks again for your efforts

You want photos... Let me chase Au Post down  ;D Will strip mine down and take pics...  They did make a change and I can see why.  It may also be that teh locktite was there from Manufacture to stop people playing and rust has made its way into the spring loaded balls and the locating pin...  It is pitted and you can see that it is the week spot.  In mine the pin has been swapped for some SS grub screws that come in from teh side. NOTE: None of the screws in mine had any loctite involved.
sounds like I got lumped with the beta model ;)
  • How do you find it is to use on a busy day or are you just using it sometimes? I tried one a month or so back and didn't like it much in the hand.

I noticed I started to get a bit of RSI when cranking out 300 plus coffees a day so I reverted to my Reg Barber Radical Pro - which is perfect for my hand size - the main thing with the concept tamper is that it's a great learning tool for my staff as even tamping pressure means that we're all in the same ballpark Still isn't it the case that 9 bars of extraction pressure is way more than can be exerted by the human hand - and that this the main deciding factor when it comes to pressure Vs extraction equation? P
  • 1 Bar is BAR (1 bar = 14.50326 psi) PSI (1 psi = 0.06895 bar) KPa (1 psi = 6.8948 KPa) 9 Bar is = 130.527 psi
  • And what that all means is circa 450-500 lbs that 9bar is exerting on the puck if my maths is correct  :) Anyone employ a gorilla barista? The owner of the tamper I had a little go of is in a franchise store and it gets used for training there too. I reckon these days the attanto click mat and your normal tamper might make more sense for commercial training.

So has it arrived in one piece and is it working ?
Yes thanks AM - it was waiting for me at work the whole time - but I've been off with the dreaded lurgy these past few days - been using it all day now and it works better than ever, dare I say better than new - as it has a smoother action due to being more highly lubricated - no pun intended ! Thanks again for a great fix - we've been under the hammer today and it's been great to have my old faithful tamper working again - and I don't care what anyone says: tamper does make a difference - I make better coffee with thus tamper as I get tighter extractions! Cheers a million, Pat

  • OK How much are they & how do they compare to the Espro Click Tamper or similar KK

They are the same principle as the Espro but you can adjust your tamp pressure to suite plus they have a rubber ring around the base to protect your porter filter when you tap before tamp. it's the overall design that makes it easy to get a level  tamp. I got mine from Canada delivered for $97.00..I think Mark got one too.. Cheers gra..
  • I noticed the other day when I went for the Strega day that Barazi have a concept art tamper there but its the model with a rubber ring khandleexclusiv_tc.jpg

So Pat... Is it still holding up ? Must admit, have still not shown mine to the wife...  Need to get her over the new grinder first  :D AM
Yes mate working fine thanks - although I fnd that the tamper has a tendency to wind itself tighter and tighter with continued use - but this is easily compensated for by adjusting it manually every couple of days Re: the rubber ring on the base - the main benefit i find with this is that it 'glides' into the basket, reducing tension and the amount of effort required to get the job done - so it's ergonomic as well as well!
  • Hi Guys, Hope no-one minds me posting this here. (Mod please delete if appropriate) We can supply the Concept Art tampers via a Special Order - please see our Sponsor Page for more info. Regards Matt The E61 Espresso Machinery Co
