Just my trusty frankenpopper for now, but when I get back from my forthcoming holiday in a few weeks, I'll be recommisioning and upgrading a hottop I picked up for a good price some time ago.

Thanks Ewan - it was a delight meeting you today and chatting about all things coffee. Bukit is very nice, remember to let rest about 9 days. Tons of body, crema and that typical sumatran hint of mocha PNG Bannum Wo AA is a stellar coffee - I am rationing myself until the new crop arrives in a few weeks. Such a beautifully balanced, clean cup. Tiger is a reasonably strong bean - dark choc and cocoa spices. Costa Rica Tarrazu is like a candy stick - super sweet and you may think you are drinking a hot slurpee. Good luck with the roasting.

Just placed my first order with beangreen. Very smooth and paypal option for payment is great. Ordered 2kg Indian Monsoonal Malabar AA 1kg Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Grade 2 Washed - 1kg 1kg Brazil Daterra Estate - Sweet Collection 1kg Honduras El Filo Cup of Excellence It was really nice to be able to order as 1kg so that I can try a number of different beans, good prices and free postage too. Would have preferred a https checkout which was my only concern.

I buy my beans from a variety of sources: Ministry Grounds Beangreen CS Greenguys (no longer around) I really appreciate being able to buy 1kg of beans from Beangreen. It gives you the flexibility of trying a number of different varieties without amassing a huge stockpile. Their service has always been good, and delivery is very quick. Quality is good, and I have enjoyed all the varieties I have bought. They have a great choice, prices are reasonable and were recommended by an industry specialist. The only improvement, or should I say service that they can add is a more detailed description of their beans. By this I mean a description of the flavour/tastes one should expect from the bean;and possibly a suggestion of a roast profile. In depth cupping results are probably wishful thinking.

I bought some greens from Bean Green also and found the service and the product exemplary! Thanks AM for putting me on to them! I've also used Ministry Of Grounds and CS and found both services excellent. In the old days I used Alan Frew's CoffeeCo and Merlos Torrefazione in the Valley (Brisbane).

I get mine from; - Green Bean ( great variety plus some exotics which they sell in 500g lots) - Ministry Grounds - CS - Di Bella - theyre happy to sell Green Beans - other roasters arent. I prefer now to buy by the kilo - at one stage I was being bulldozed into buying 2,5kG at a time which was expensive and it got a bit boring when you only roast 300g per week. Prefer buying more expensive beans , Cup of Excellence, - exotic and African mainly.

Thanks for people offer some good info about where to get the green bean. I just try to start my first home roast due to the local roaster start to become less reliable and pricy. Since I live pretty far from urban area (Townsville, North QLD), the postage is a huge concern for me. After quote few kg green bean at CS, it will cost me 20 bucks. Bean Green sounds like a better option for me. Since I am a newbie of home roast, and never really know what kind of flavour I prefer. (Used to buy home blend from local roaster). Can some body suggest which blend I can start with from "Bean Green"? And I don't think they offer any mix package for starter like CS did, right? Then I have to buy at least 1 kg for each bean. I also looks for some decaf bean for which I can drink after evening. Cheers Colin

I have not ordered from beangreen (yet), but personally I'd try and source a few different region beans just to get you going. Having to get $50 worth to get free shipping, I'd get a selection of five: I'd get something 1kg of each of: Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Kenyan AA, Brazil Santos naturals, PNG Kimel, Indonesian Java Kalistat. Should give you a sampling of very differing coffees to play with. Others will have other opinions, but that's what I'd go for. You might love some, you might hate some, but it will get your tastebuds deciding what you like. It will also allow you to do some basic blending - Indonesian, for example, blends well with Ethiopian generally. The Brazil is a good base bean if you want to mellow out some of the others if you don't like them as much etc. There is one decaf on beangreen, so go with that one, but personally I wouldn't roast that to begin with - they will roast completely differently to all the others and may just end up confusing and frustrating you in the short term.

Yep, what Richard said. That'd would be a good selection. Also try each roasted both light and dark. Not sure what you'll be using to roast, but the 500g cs samples don't last for many roasts (and you don't get to choose what beans are in the pack). I don't think CS is best for you given you don't yet know what you like and shipping is costly, but keep looking in future once you have some favourites as Andy does get good beans and some would be worth ordering if you knew 2.5kg was not going to be wasted.

Hi and welcome Colin I blend when the need arises I normally take "pot Luck" & blend the small amounts I have left over from the single origin roasts So far I have had great luck with all my add hock blends Experiment is the spice of live KK

I agree with the suggestions of others Colin, buy 5 x 1kg bags of different Arabica beans from different countries of origin, that way you will be able to sample various flavours as well as qualify for free shipping. Regarding quality, my feeling is the quality of greens from Beangreen is just as good if not better than greens from other suppliers and the price is certainly competitive.

Thanks for everyone's reply. That will be very useful, especially thanks for Richard by listing all these choice. I am thinking buying a 2nd popcorn maker and do some modification. Still looking and bidding around the eBay. Hope will get some luck with something under 20.-. I always like to do the experiment. I will say coffee is quite a science too, especially when I really got a publication from somewhere about espresso brewing time. I have not really thought about blend yet. I may need to spend more time surfing on the website about blend. First thing first. Will order my green bean soon!! Thanks to all again. Colin

I get mine from Ministry Grounds too. I've found the quality to be excellent. They have some really great central american beans coming soon. I also like the fact that you can review beans on the site. I always give my favourites a good write-up to help others who might be having trouble trying to decide.

I have purchased my green bean from BeanGreen twice already. I am going to buy the third one and share the bean with other friend in uni. Although I know the delivery fee for beanGreen is free, I found their bean a bit higher than CS(beanbay). In the end, CS actually offer cheaper invoice (same region/estate bean) As a newbie, I dont know if there is any different (quality, service?) between all these different importer? Because so far I just want to find the cheaper one or money-wise one. I live in Townsville, QLD, so the postage is pretty high and no way I can pick it up myself. Has anyone experienced the cheapest one or cheapest way to get the green bean? Cheers Colin

Hi Colin, I have shopped with both CS and GreenBean and your comment that CS is cheaper per invoice is not entirely true. On several occasions I have found the reverse to be the case. It depends obviously on the QTY ordered and which S/O you are buying. I still shop with both and yes I have noticed a difference in the same (or like named) S/O from both vendors. Marc

I tend to shop with places other than CS at present, mainly due to the fact that I'm buying more expensive beans and can't afford to buy in 2.5kg lots. That means Beangreen and Ministry Grounds.

Generally along with cheapest you are going to find with green price is related to quality not all the time but it is a fairly good guide. Can't think of anyone buying sports cars that bag up and sell small quantities of Green to home roasters on the profit margins. Best bet to keep the freight down is order a little bigger batches so whatever freight is lower/kg. As someone in a similar situation to you (out of a capital) I do tend to buy 5kg or larger lots normally. Apart from that if your a student and on a budget it's a bit of a tough gig paying more than you have to but it's worth it for the variation and taste experiences offered. 8)

Thanks for Marc, shape shifter and beanflying's reply. Sounds like there is no 100% correct answer and I need to compare more often and what I can offer. So far from my first two purchase and the coming third one, my strategy is stick to few SO I like and add on some new one which cheap. My budget is under 15.- per kg then I will be happy enough. I start to share my roast bean with friend with a basic cost, that way I kind of been paid to experience my roast. So I can try more different type of bean in a short turnover rate. Honestly, change from popcorn maker to a Corretto (BM/HG) rise up the amount of bean i can roast and really enjoy the difference I try. I will include the ministry grounds for my next purchase, and I love their informative website too. Just have not got the quote of the postage yet. Not sure how much will cost me. Colin

So true. Pricing on coffee can vary up to 600% depending on the grade and availability (exclusiveness) of the bean. Coffee prices are pretty much set by a number of factors - differential on settled contracts from the C-index, financing, storage, risk, freight, etc. Green bean supply is by no means a margin or value-based business, it's a scale business. If you think that one suppliers is "more expensive" than another, you will find that almost impossible to prove given that suppliers will *RARELY* stock the same precise bean, e.g. it might be a Ethiopian Yirgachaffe GR2 washed, but it's from a different farm and as such it is priced differently. Even the timing for when you buy green coffee is important. I bought a pallet of a bean (a ton) and then the same lot number was 20% more expensive on the next pallet the following month because I did not forward contract. Most of the suppliers who offer green beans to home roasters range very good (even go so far as to say excellent) grade coffees. These can be unique, high quality beans from small farms or microlots. If you have ever tried to open jute bags (sometimes it is very fiddly and frustrating), scoop and weigh beans into a package, then seal, label, prepare the box, label, ship, etc. then you might realize this is a VERY time consuming and labor intensive activity. This labor effort needs to be accounted on top of the high grade beans you are purchasing. In my mind, you are getting a damn good deal when you purchase green beans from the above mentioned providers - I still don't know how they do it for the price actually.

I bought some of the Columbian decaf from BeanGrean today. I've tried both of Neil's decafs and am wondering if anyone has a lead on another decaf I could give a go. Neil's Mexican Decaf is my favorite thus far with the Columbian a close second. I'm not a CS member so getting DecafWow Greens is not possible. Who else has a green decaf I could try?
