After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Future bean swaps? Any ideas to add variety?

General feedback on the inaugural festive bean swap has been positive, which is gratifying.
Credit for the idea goes to the homeroasters forum though.

A few people have commented that we should do more. One reason the first worked well was the novelty factor, so I am after ideas on what we should do in future to make roasting and swapping beans fun.

I have a few ideas how we can mix things up a bit  and challenge ourselves (or each other), but wanted to open this up for other peoples ideas first.

Should we do more? If so, what should the format be?

    I think we should do it for events....so we can look forward to it. "Easter bean swap" sounds logical. TBH I think it worked perfectly well. The only thing that I guess we didn't all account for is our varying methods of brewing. Maybe along with sending people the details, we should put our brewing method preferences first.

    I'm keen to have another go and like Richard I reckon we should take brewing methods into account but rather than the roaster tell the recipient how to brew the beans, perhaps the recipients can list 3 brewing preferences and receive appropriate roast/s? This could open a lot more discussion on home-based roasting methods per brewing method... perhaps we should do that now in anticipation of roasting for a set brew method?? I reckon a quarterly swap would work well. If people are too busy to take part they can rest assured knowing another swap is only 3 months away. Only other change I would make is to pair up parties so person A gets Person B's beans and vice versa. This way, I believe more feedback and discussion would ensue be it in the forum, via chat, email or PM. All for the greater good though of people increasing their skills.... My 2 cents anyway

    I'll be in it no matter how it's organised :D I loved doing it and loved the response, loved seeing everyone else's responses :) I think it's a great idea about the different sorts of roasting, sometimes there is a fine line (as I found out) between being ok for one type of method and not for another and finding that line is half the fun :)

    Yep, good thoughts. Different versions of mocha java or classic espresso blend occurred to me. Some sort of challenge/theme sounds good and might get a few new ideas bouncing around. One idea I had was instead of all roasting and shipping at once, have first person roast and send out one batch of roasted and a batch of same beans as green. Next in line roasts the greens and sends on as roasted, along with a fresh green batch for next roaster to do their best with, until last in line sends roasted to the first person to complete the loop. Not sure if this would work, but would potentially get different roasts/feedback on same (or 'similar') beans. Perhaps there is some other way to get different approaches to the same beans? Muscles - I'm not sure about pairing up. Might work better, or might reduce sense of community involvement. Probably worth trying though - that was how the homeroasters swap was set up. I can see how it would produce more discussion between bean buddies.

    I suggest One bean sourced from a sponsor All participants pay for there portion lets say a min of 1 kg, or extra if that is there wish This will be the focus - everyone talking about the same bean producing a taste or notes from different methods and styles of roasting. Its also possible for all participants to send a sample to a recognized and impartial judge for critical analysis At the end of the year (or once a year) it could turn into a competition  The Crema Golden Bean (or equivalent) for home roasters Now that should get some world attention  :lamp: KK

    KK I think I came up with a similar thing when we were doing the photo comp, so I'm all for it. :-)
