After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Bag or Deli Grinders

edited December 2011 in Grinders
We have been having a bit of an informal chat the last litle while about grinders suitable for batch processing 250-500+g at a time. Generally this has revolved around Cold Press or non espresso brewing so apart from wanting a uniform and consistent result the need for still being up to the job for Espresso is less important.

Firstly domestic grinders are generally NOT up to the job of grinding more than 100g or so at one run due to heat build up and even a lot of light commercials will struggle at 250g. There are a lot of other factors at play here such as grind size burr speed etc but generally don't do it.

Enter the bag grinders my pair of Climax baranded ones from Melbourne and I shall call them "C1 & C2" are classic Australian engineering from the late 60's for 1 and early 70's for the other. Not suitable for Espresso really although I have tested the newer one at that and it went OK but for batch lots of CP or a quick grind for brewed perfect in spite of their age. Flow rate around 16kg/hr at plunger for C2 $90, C1 yet to be tested but a whole $2.25

Note the stickers and labels 30-40 years ago this was known seems overall to have been forgotten by a lot.

Lots of better ones out there so maybe owners might like to chime in be they Dittings, Mazzers or even some of the bigger 3 phase commercials.

  • Hey there... I also have a Climax (similar to your C2) and have no problems grinding for espresso... or Turkish for that matter. This beast of a grinder has no problem grinding any of my beans into the finest powder so if yours isn't up to espresso you may want to replace or sharpen the burrs. I do like your C1 though... don't see many that old anymore. Cheers, Bruce
  • C1 when I clean it up is actually in better condition in the burr department. Shares the same older Climax set with C2 and to upgrade to the currently available ones is a $400 job with a little re machining needed. I brought the older one as a background piece for the eventual coffee shop and for the burrs so I will make the best for the newer one as it is a little more user friendly and neater. I would still love something like a Guatemala Lab or an Uber given an unlimited budget but these two will fill my needs on a budget for a while yet.
  • I've got a few deli grinders....... Have a Climax model between the C1 and C2 that's strong, but blades are not so good and consistency of particle not the best, but it works and the motor will last forever. Have a few DIP's and not so impressed - relatively fast, but adjustment not so precise. Owned a Ditting which was a superb grinder - expensive, but just like driving a BMW........always rewarding. Been happy with my Compak K120........blades are rated to about 14 ton - it's fast and quiet. Anyone buying a deli bag grinder MUST get a shaker.........else your life will be a misery.
  • A personal Oompa Loompa perhaps?
  • ha - C1 is a classic! Looks like a concrete mixer!  You see a few of these type grinders in the middle eastern hospitality supply stores on hume highway, campbellfield!
