After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
I'm only guessing here KK but will the cork be hard to cut - as in a hole saw jagging it because its soft ? Agree on the grinder AM - apart from not been ideal, its a messy bugger. Although, I keep it pretty bloody clean now. Less gusto with the knife and a quick wipe after every shot. I used to leave everything until the weekly backflush and clean up the mountains of ground coffee then but Ive changed my ways - hooowwwwlllllllllll + swagger
Very nice job Derrilex, great attention to detail, you wont regret cutting the base right out, my original had a closed base, lasted about a week before the accumulation of stray coffee grounds combined with the odd drop of water turned the bottom of the block into a sludgy mess that was awkward to clean, cut the bottom out then and there and have never looked back.
DB, don't forget post counts have been up since chat was added. What I think we're seeing here is chat withdrawal - a temporary spike in posts because we can't chat. I don't think it's necessarily going to stay that way.
Believe it or not Kelsey I only whipped out the bezzera cloth the other day after having it for a few months. So glad I did. They are so absorbant yet dont get skanky like a tea towel. The miracle cloth. DB - so much easier to sand/finish inside the bore with no bottom too.

Incorrect, I've looked at the numbers closely and drawn graphs, over a 4 period moving average the post trend began declining around July 2011 and continued doing so until mid December, I don't have figures past that date, it's a shame I can't post Excel spreadsheets, the graphs tell the story very clearly.

I certainly hope your wrong Kelsey, its in the interest and power of all members to have Crema go onto bigger and better things, a strong membership posting on a regular basis will ensure continued growth leading to an interesting and informative forum.

To be honest I didn't bother much with finishing the inside, the finish on yours makes mine look very amateurish.
I had to sand it out as the hole cutters left a few scratches but with the home made drum sander they came out pretty easily revealing some truly awesome grain patterns which the photos dont do justice

Sounds like you're a man after my own heart DB, I love me some spreadsheet action also. you should see the lengths I go to when renting a house or purchasing a big ticket item (like a coffee machine, for example!). BF had given us different data however - the post count has been questioned by quite a few of us at the end of each month, do it's still a concern for those of us that like chat. It goes without saying that I hope Crema continues to thrive - this is where I choose to invest the bulk of my coffee-related online time and I'd personally like it to stay that way. I personally simply wouldn't post the more trivial and conversational style posts we've seen here the last few days, except that chat is down - its purely anecdotal, but I feel there's a conversational style going on at the moment that frequently goes OT and is cryptic and hard to follow. A forum is more than the sum of its post-count - I still feel (again, anecdotally) that we get better quality of posts when the trivial stuff and socialization remains in chat. Happy to be wrong tho!
Tradetools do complete kits for pretty good $$$ and they are well made too - still chineese no doubt but still good or they do individuals in just about anysize you want. Coopers plains store was out of 70's yesterday but a quick trip to eagle farm store soon fixed that. Probably worth buying a kit so you get all the good arbors then add a few specific sizes as you need them. Individuals are really well priced. Do not buy from bunnings as you will pay $ 45 per saw. TT's are about $ 12 - $ 15 for anything upto 90 mm and around $ 20 - $ 40 for monsters upto 140 mm
That first type are total shit KK. The second ones are the go. Have a browse through the trade tools web site. Warning, once you go in you may never come out - at least not without damaging the plastic
Got this little fella going into a cafe tomorrow for trials. At the moment they are using a little nylon cutting board next to the grinder to do their tamping on. Ive stood there and watched all the operators and their technique is rubbish due to the angled handle on the PF. They hold the handle level which puts the basket on a angle, give it a quick tamp ( not even realising the coffee is not level in the basket ) and smash it into the group. They have a 2 group elektra ? and a 2 group wega. The PF's are interchangable. The wierdo angle on the PF handle presented a few problems. I had to keep making the handle cut out deeper and deeper until the PF sat nice and level. I would have also liked to make it not so high but any lower and the PF handle would be very close to the bench and a pain to get your hand around. The tamper they are using is a revolting piece of crap that looks like a dog has been chewing on it. Well overdue for replacement and its condition confirms something I have always known. Staff dont give a shit about the gear if they dont own it. More pics when in situ. http://s1174.photobucket.com/albums/r603/derrilex/Going in for shop trials/
I think I'll have to have a quite word with the owner re the tamper - could be a hard sell given the way the staff treat things. Didnt you want a threesome ? 2 x PF's and a tamp rest ?
