After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
Columbia La Union Excelso, about 30sec into second crack. Not totally happy with this roast, as I have never roasted this one before. I do however have some browns roasted by mycuppa for comparison purposes when tasting time comes. Would welcome any comments. If I can, I will attach roast log and photo Oh - 230g green gave 192g brown. Sorry - photo not very good. They are a tad lighter than in the photo and in better focus
I found time to do two roasts on Friday night. A decaf, which I'll talk about in a different thread and a five-bean blend. The 5-Bean blend started out as a four-bean suggestion from RichardM, but morphed into something else on the fly. I'm trying to use up some of the beans that haven't seen much action yet. It was; 180g Kenyan Dorman Estate 120g PNG Kimmel 120g Dominican Republic Cibo Altura De Constanza 100g Brazil Daterra Estate Sweet 80g Monsoonal Malabar I roast on the balcony, so the last few weeks it's been challenging trying to find a time when the balcony isn't soaked or actively being rained on. So when everything calmed down a bit on Friday night, I grabbed it. The decaf was first and went well, but by the time it was over the weather was closing in and the radar was showing a large bank of rain coming my way. I went for it, but missed the start of second crack because the wind was so damn loud! Pulled at 19 mins in the middle of rolling second crack: It was a fair bit darker than usual, but still very even. I've been trying it daily since and I think the MM is a little ashy in this case, but the flavour is growing nicer each day. Hopefully it'll last long enough for me to taste it in its prime! I probably won't go this dark again.

UNM - Colombians can be deceptive to roast - they have a tendency to show a lighter "monk-brown" roast level. Most roasters see the lighter color and then go darker - some colombians can handle quite darker roast levels without breaking down. You might be surprised by your result. As I've only had 1 shot at this bean so far, I also thought I had gone too light.......but it's likely to develop ok.
Jeff, not too worried about colour as I only look when the beans hit the cooling test these days. my little hottop struggled to keep temp rising fast enough from about 130 degrees, then it ran away a bit just before first crack and I'd like the first to second crack to be a bit slower. At least that's what I THINK would be better. Tasting will be interesting in a few days.
I'm just roasting a blend 600gm in total. My effing neighbour has just started mowing his lawn. So I guess I'm doing this one visually. Anyway 20% Brazilian sweet, 20% png elephant and wahgi AA, 30% java, 30% mm. Tried this a while ago and it was lovely around the 12-14 day onwards. Roasted just past 2nd crack. Bit slow fc 16mins. Sc and pulled just after at 22mins http://s907.photobucket.com/albums/ac279/Lacehim/?action=view
On Sunday I roasted this blend: 180g Kenya Dorman Estate 180g PNG Kimmel 120g DR Cibo Altura De Constanza 120g Indian Monsoonal Malabar I've been hunting for a blend that uses the crema and power of the MM and gradually increasing its presence in my blends over the last few weeks. I'm hoping that the DR will add a little brightness to the smoothness of the base beans, while the MM adds crema and oompf to the blend. I had a taste each day so far and it's very very smooth so far, can't wait to taste what it matures into. As a side-note, I've been making my wife 50/50 blends of 'real' roasts with the decaf because she's not a massive fan of the decaf taste by itself. This blends extremely well with the decaf to produce a smooth and flavoursome low-caf brew.
Roasted 725 grams (my standard weekly batch size) of Yemen Sanani Mocca in the Coretto about 4 days ago, pulled it just before SC, drinking nicely now and improving daily.
This week I have done four roasts on the Behmor: Want a nice Mocha\Java blend (am up for suggestions but this was it): 300g roast 50:50 blend Yemen Sawani Mocca : Sumatran Mandheling Blue Batak 1Ib P4D start +90sec, externally cooled and CS9. Three days on and I had to try it. Think this one will grow 300g roast Indian MM 1IbP4 start +90 with 1.30min preheat 1C@ 7.32, R1C@ 7.15, brush in door 2C@ 1min, pulled and external cool with 253g recovered. CS7-8 or so KJM take offs to try: 300g 72g Peru Ceja 60g Guatamala Huehue 96g Ethiopia Yirgacheffe 72g Sumantran Gayo Speciality 1IbP4D start +90sec, pulled at 2.5min to go on rolling 2C. Nice CS9 300g 72g Brazil Daterra Sweet Collection 60g Guatamala Huehue 96g Ethiopia Yirgacheffe 72g Sumantran Mandheling Blue Batak 1IbP4D start +90sec All these tasting are happening via a porlex grinder, Breville 800ES or the work Sunbeam EM6910.......... No justice but the guys at work have been enjoying the Peru as long blacks!!
Some great looking roasts there Jonty! I particularly like the look of the last one but I would swap the amounts of the Yirg and the Hue Hue for my tastes. Like your Mocha Java take also. Have you tried Java Kalistat yet? That would be an awesome substitute for the Blue Batak... I think there has to be some more Yemen in my upcoming greens order. You've whet my appetite!!
Quick report on the above blend - here it is again for the desperately lazy: 180g Kenya Dorman Estate 180g PNG Kimmel 120g DR Cibo Altura De Constanza 120g Indian Monsoonal Malabar This is a bit of a winner. I pulled a fairly perfect double ristretto this morning that was thick, syrupy and very very smooth. Still just enough brightness to make it interesting and some strong flavours I couldn't quite pick. My sister in law has recently switched to long blacks (no sugar) after discovering she's lactose intolerant. I gave her this yesterday and her response was: "Wow.... is there a hint of toffee in here?". That was the flavour I was tasting also.
I just roasted up a second batch of this blend from two weeks ago: 180g Kenya Dorman Estate 180g PNG Kimmel 120g DR Cibo Altura De Constanza 120g Indian Monsoonal Malabar Gotta love the KKTO, so repeatable - FC came bang on 10mins again and was pulled at a comfortable rolling 2nd just after 19mins. I enjoyed this roast so much I had to do it again. My wife's loving it in milk also. I mix it in 50/50 with decaf so she gets just a little bit of a caffeine hit in the mornings.
Peru Grace Estate / Nicaragua Ramacafe Fine Estate 75/25. Mostly doing this one for cold brew. Colombia Santa Rita Special Reserve. Sydney Royal Plunger Category entry.
Just finished a roast today as stocks were running very low I did a pre roast blend of 670 grams of Sulawesi Torago Jaya 30 grams of Monsooned Robusta See how this turns out :thumb: Experimenting for me is the spice of life KK
I've kicked myself up the backside and I've doing four roasts today, two are done, two more to go Tanzania TEC Honduras Minas Hue Geisha I'm using the same quantity but they have different weights, already I've noticed a difference, the Honduras needed a much higher fan speed than the Tanzania. I'll have photos on my website after I've finished :thumb:
Due to it being a quiet day, I cranked up the hottop first thing and roasted 250g mexico yeni navan. Can't remember when I last roasted this as a single origin. First crack was like firecrackers going off.
I got some time to myself today and needed to roast for next week so I roasted up a CofE El Salvador Lot 29 Las Nicolas what was a Christmas pressie from our excellent sponsor BeanGreen. I only roasted 300gm of green which will do me for a week and leaves me about the same to do another or possibly blend. I preheated to 125oC, dumped the beans in and I hit 1C at 9mins. Nice loud cracks too, great stuff. Very even roast, and I burped the TO a few times, and pulled it just as RSC was kicking in, around 14-15mins. The roast was very even. Can't wait to crack the bag open...
I roasted on Wednesday night 300g of PNG Wahgi AA for a work colleague after he told me he paid $14 for 150g SO Indian bean in the burbs of Melb.......... He has a Jura Coffee Machine. I haven't even tasted the PNG Wahgi AA myself as I just got the beans the day before. So hopefully with a weeks rest and cooled just a 2nd cracked started, he will have some delightful coffee. I have since dropped him mycuppa details as he is based in Melbourne.
I did three roasts today. This is the first chance I've had since the Bub was born along with work going into overdrive. The KKTO didn't miss a beat: 550g 50/50 Columbian decaf/Daterra Opus 1 700g El Salvedor Finca el Carmen 1000g 40/40/20 PNG/Mexican/Indonesian washed Robusta All nice medium roasts with the exception of the last which was a touch lighter because it's for plunger coffee.
Fresh out of the roaster:-- 1.8KG Peru Ceja de Selva Panama Bouquette de Eleta Sumatran Gayo Indian Mysoor Nuggets pre-roast blend 50/17/17/16% drop temp 170C first crack 12.30 unloaded prior to second crack at 15.50 medium roast lovely even roast with great aroma
haven't tried this combo before so should interesting!!!
Today, I decided to do a few back to back roasts while entering my accounts into MYOB and testing the last EM4800 before it finds a new home tomorrow. 250g Peru Ceja de Selva 250g Dominican Constanza 200g Monsoon Malabar None of them were exactly what I wanted - that's the trouble with doing 3 or 4 things at once. All OK, but not quite what I was aiming for. Just enough MM left for one more roast, will do that soon while I remember how it behaved so I can get better results. Just realised I have never roasted MM as single origin in the Hottop before, so I guess I shouldn't have expected to nail it. At least I have the roast data for that one saved.
