After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

  • Hi all, Name is Bryan. Currently living in Newcastle NSW, but have moved around a bit. I have always liked a good coffee but this is the first time I have been able to convinced my Wife to buy a machine. Our starting machine is a Breville BES900 and BCG800 smart grinder. We are really enjoying making coffee and are still learning as we go. Best thing about being a n00b is each cup is better then the last. It's been a rapid introduction in to the world of coffee for me and I am really injoying the process and outcomes. Other interests besides coffee making (newest interest) is motorsport and computers/gadgets in general.

    G'Day Bryan, welcome to Crema. As Kelsey remarked, in the short time since its release the BES900 has developed an excellent reputation, good choice on your part. Have only recently returned to Adelaide from a week in Newcastle, helping my daughter and her family settle into a new home, her husband (also a coffee freak) was recently posted there from Laverton, Victoria. Thanks for taking the time to tell us a little about yourself. Guess the next step is setting up a Corretto roaster. ;) Cheers, DB. :)

  • Ahhh Mcgee, I did wonder if you were around in one of the forums :) AM I am around just quiet, yeah yeah shutup  :rofl: I think I'm getting better, it might just be a stress thing where my body decided enough and shut down on me. As AM said wait until the chat starts up again, we all have a ball chatting to each other and getting to know each other.  If you are interested there are a few of us in Newcastle that roast as well :)

  • G'day all, from Albany, centre of the glorious Great Southern region in WA. I'm Dinsdale (of Monty Python fame) to all my friends. My kidz (cuckoos) have all grown up and flown the coup, so doing the "Darby and Joan" thing with my beautiful wife (Mrs Piranha  ;D).  I only do small amounts of casual work these days, though not necessarily by choice all of the time.  In my copious spare time I like to windsurf (still not very good at it I'm afraid), play with r/c model boats, shoot/fish/camp and do all of the above with my grandkidz.  I've also been very heavily into sailing and motorbikes in the past I've not been too serious about my coffee until recently, although we had a Napolitana espresso machine for 13 years.  Recently (2 weeks ago) I bought a BES900/BCG800 and have begun to rue the wasted years already.  Been using up the last of the cheap(ish) pre-ground coffee, and, with some experimentation, even that's tasting almost acceptable.  A local roaster (The Naked Bean) is on my visit list for this week, to help get us started into real coffee. Any'ow, that's me, in a nutshell.  I have so many questions to ask that I don't know where to begin, so I'm sure my name will pop up pretty regularly around the various threads.  Alas, it'll be a while before I'll be in any position to offer much advice about coffee.

I'm a 28 year old wifey and supermum  ;D and officially a secondary music teacher. I live in Toowoomba Qld, which actually has some really great little cafes dotted around the place. I started in hospitality about 12 years ago as a way to pay for my textbooks! But I just can't escape the allure of that little brown bean. In the last few years my eyes have been opened to so many possibilities within the world of espresso. After working hard as a barista for 12 years, and taking a bit of time off to look after my little ones, I am ready to courageously pursue my true dream of owning an exceptional coffee business. I know I probably sound like every other fledgeling disillusioned entrepreneur out there! But my husband and I want to spend the next couple of years doing research, saving our little tooshes off :o and practising some home roasting. I have learned that life is way too short to not live with passion! And coffee is that one thing that gets my tummy in knots with excitement - people think I'm crazy but I guess that goes with the territory?! Looking forward to gaining lots of wisdom and insight from this forum. sistabarista

    Hold onto your dream sista I meditated on opening my own cafe EVERY DAY FOR THREE YEARS until it finally happened now I've owned three in the last ten years and my current one has just been listed in The Age Melbourne Magazines top 100 cafes!

  • Hi all Seriously, how do you do it? Some very interesting people out there. I wanted to join the forum to get some feedback from time to time but this site offers so much more than that! I'm almost 51 and live in Bunbury WA. I'm married and between my wife and I we have three kids, if you can call them kids at 23, 21 and 19. We've been married almost 4 years. I work with a mining company and have done for over 30 years (yeah I know sad isn't it) My wife (Kylie is 43 and is gorgeous) and I like to eat out, go to the movies, go to concerts and travel. Our travels are mostly to Bali. I love to fish, enjoy all sorts of music and if the Blues win the AFL flag this year and Bruce Springsteen tours Oz as some are suggesting he will, then my life will pretty much be complete. Kylie and I enjoy our coffee but I have to honest,  we're not in the same league as some of you. We have owned manual and semi automatic machines and we're in the process of deciding on buying a San Marco 85e for use at home. We're a little disappointed at how long some of our machines have lasted and so we're looking to invest in a machine that hopefully will last many years. I hope the robust nature of this model is worthwhile. It is a manual machine but i think the art of coffee making is enhanced when you have more input yourself. Anyway, if any of you out there have any advice on this particular machine then please feel free to share your thoughts. Cheers

    I am a supporter of pro-sumer or small commercial machines for home use & in fact currently own 2 The main thing is to get a brand that is 1) Trusted and luckily you have a broad choice 2) Reliable 3) Parts and service - even if that's self service, - if you are in a remote area Have a look at our for sale section as many members will at some time upgrade and great bargains can be had on well looked after machines KK

    Not all of us are equally experienced, which is a good thing as we are all learning - sometimes a fresh perspective is helpful. You probably have more coffee making experience than me. Glad to have you here, don't be shy about posting.
