After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

What coffee am I drinking at the moment?

  • That seems like quite a large roast muscles. What roaster?
  • All in the KKTO of course... 3 x 0.5kg batches, PNG & MM together and 2 lots of Colombian

Drinking my latest blend: 10% PNG Robusta (150g) 23% Indian Monsson Malabar (350g) 67% Colombian Organic Supremo (1000g) Chocolate and caramel with a puch but oh, so smooooooth  :thumb: definitely my best blend yet. Good with milk and surprisingly better as a long black. Awesome as an espresso... Will call this one "KA-POW!" and will definitely keep working with these beans
PNG & MM is now 14d ays post and Colombian 4 days and.... WOW! It just keeps geeting better... :coffee2:
  • Had a bit of an Easter gathering at my place yesterday and created am impromptu blend specially for the occasion 60 per cent Nicaragua Diamond 20 per cent Ethiopia Gugi 20 per cent Mexico San Cristobal In a word - bloody delicious! Had it as an espresso, and as a latte and was very happy with both - this is one to keep up my sleeve I reckon! The Nicaragua imparts some lovely earthy tones - a good base note for the blend, and the Gugi is floral and aromatic, whilst the San Cristobal adds roast capsicum, spice and tobacco notes Made me want to either smoke a Cohiba Robusto with it or sip it with an Armagnac - or preferably both at the same time!
  • Started the day with a Costa Rica Tarrazzu, nice pour not as acidic as I have found this roast until now. As I have a bit of a bean glut going on here again, I gave away some ground coffee to a client today and tried some of the four bean blend recommended by RM last week (equal parts Tiger Mt, PNG Highlands, Malawi Nyika and Java Ijen sundried. Only roasted Saturday so still a bit fresh - had an aeropress long black. I struggled to find the best words to describe the main defining chracteristics of this blend. Demure? Delicate? Subtle? None of these really capture the essence of this one. It is more of an IN YER FACE - WAKE UP AND GET THIS DOWN YER THROAT! blend. It's a pretty powerful mix that I suspect would give muscles recent blend a damn good hiding if they were to meet in a dark alley. Not sure yet how it will take to espresso, but I suspect it is going to give the little Gaggia something to think about when they meet in a few days. I did have a roast planned for a special little project, but suspect this will be just the blend to use instead. More later...

Hah. Well put. I guess I take my coffee in milk, so subtlety isn't what I think of when looking at blends. Glad it worked out for you.
  • Still enjoying my Ka-Paow blend very much. Loving Aeropress Long Blacks at work and Double Macchiato's at home  :coffee2:
  • I'm still enjoying he Ethopia Guji and the Sumatra Lintong - both individually and combined hey make a sensational and aromatic blend!
  • Well in the last 10 days polished off some CR Herbatzu, then decided to throw a 33% blend of MM into because I could. Interesting!  From there we have just polished off 250g of El Salvador El Finca Carmen and I roasted on 28/4 some of KK decaf - impressive, although ran into 2C quicker than I thought it would - IMPRESSIVE.  The container tonight has been topped up with a 260g of Indian Elephant Hills. Will start tasting that tomorrow. Sitting in the cupboard from last Sat roast session is: Ethiopian Sidamo:Sumantra blue tak 50:50 blend, for the brother inlaw (Giotto owner) but uses G Jean beans.... PNG wahgi AA for brother inlaw MM as an SO - still needs another week. Sumantra Gayo Guatemala La Esperanza
  • So far this week, double ristrettos are the favoured shot. Started the week, with tanzania tec at 8 days post roast. One DR, then a long black on DR base. Today a DR Brazil allegre/Tiger Mt (75/25) and made number one daughter a short macchiato on DR base (she normally has single espresso shot). Served with no comment from me).  Went down well and she preferred it that way. Edit: actually I am wondering. Is it a short macc? Approx 35 gram shot with 20-25 gram milk. how much milk is normal as ratio to coffee?
  • Getting into a bag of Di Bella Moderna, last couple of their blends I have had haven't done it for me but this one is going down nicely. Was a but gassy at 6 days but has settled well at 10. Couple of Double Latte's this morning. 1kg of Seven Seeds House blend to crack later in the week still at 5 days post roast.
  • Very nice Rwandan Buf from MBD I 'got my Mum for mothers day'. Major self interest she had the option of pre ground Vittoria otherwise on offer ??? Apart from that getting some quite nice results out of the seven seeds blend, tiny little beans with a good percentage of Peaberry in it. Light roasted as you might expect but still decent depth of flavour all round  :thumb:
  • Just hooking into some 3 week old MM :)  Followed by some Sumatran Gayo later in the week......
  • Trying a dark horse brew that Ive been avoiding as it was one of the first done on the hybrid. 100gm yirga/ 150gmPNG robusta/ 350 gm terranova. Pleasantly surprised. Not overly fruity which is good for me. Roasted on May 23 rd. Not sure how much of it I'll get through though as more pleasant things sit on the bench. Could be a good one to donate to the parents for their plunger
  • just finished a bag of Peru CDS this morning. I thought it was really nice at ten days post roast. Daughter was not so enthusiastic, but expressed delight when I said I was going to  give her a Brazilian tomorrow.

Is there more stock of this????  I love the JK!
  • Not sure if still available to buy but I grabbed 5kg a while ago... 4.5kg to go  :thumb:
  • Just finished my guatemala capetillo y annexos COE. I do have another batch resting though. this morning I moved on to some red icatu from El Salvador that I got ages ago in a swap with bottomline. an interesting one this- initial impression was of low sweetness, but that kicked in afterwards and it made for a perfectly nice short black. took the grinder back a couple of notches and made an aeropress long black. Seriously excellent and you could almost swear it had been sweetened with maple syrup. more aeropress to come for this bean.
  • When I was in the Brisbane CBD this week for the first time in years, I discovered those markets opposite the top of the Queen St Mall. Noble Coffee who pretty much seemed to be doing a single product - single origin PNG roasts in medium-dark and dark. They had a sample out which the girl said was medium-dark so I got a couple of hundred grams on a whim. Opened it up when I got home to discover it was the lightest roast I've ever seen. Even, nice looking, but so very light that I was worried about grassy, fruity acidity and was a little worried I'd wasted my cash. Short story - beautiful. Rich, earthy tasting and very very smooth with only a hint of the brightness that seems so common to the high-end coffee places that I've visited in Sydney and which I don't really like in abundance. They were also selling PNG greens at $15 a kilo, so good to keep in mind for an emergency top-up. Wish I'd gotten some now.
  • I have been sipping on some Rwandan Mig from '3rd Crack' - Uncle Joes coffee in Brisbane. Fairly light roast and my Espresso machine was in re plumbing mode today so a couple of very nice Siphon brews was the result. First time I have used a Siphon in 3 months I guess as most of my manual brew gear has been packed away. Time to get off my espresso kick and back to basics I think  :)
  • started with a rather nice full espresso shot of yeni navan. Daughter1 had her usual brazilian, then daughter2 requested a coffee (usual response "it tastes like coffee dad"). Made a flat white and a straight espresso of my recent doppio tostada Malawi Nyika. I struggle to find the right description for this one. Rank, or repulsive spring to mind. Wont be deliberately repeating this. Anyway, it was worth trying before binning it. We'll see if she comments when she drinks hers. RESULTS ARE IN: I walked into living room and cup was empty. Daughter said "Can you make me another coffee dad?" So maybe not for the bin then. Everyone has different tastes.

You've gotta stop saying this. Puts all sorts of impure thoughts in my head
  • During the week and this weekend I've been giving 'Capricornia' a try, by Costas of Noosa. It's an Aussie bean and was recommended to me as an espresso lover. I don't love it. AM knows that I have a tendency to grind a little on the fine side - this usually means an extremely restricted shot if I'm trying a new bean from a reputable roaster. In this case the blonding started fast and the shot was a gusher. I haven't yet got the grind right for this bean. Even so I would say it has the echo of what I like in an espresso. Almost like it might once have been rich and dark. If I didn't know better if I'd think I was drinking supermarket beans. Given the lack of roast date, it's probably a freshness issue or the Aussie beans themselves. I wouldn't bother buying Costa beans again, particularly when my other two options this week were the cheaper Noble Coffee (mentioned previously and a really nice brew) or my own roasts.
  • Honduras COE roasted 15th and served as a straight GOD SHOT. :coffee2: :thumb:
  • Lucky bugger. And no mention of a brazilian  :thumb: :D
  • Cuba Altura with a hint of a mix of high grown beans - roasted light As the bag is finishing, its now comming into its own. it's just so yummy  :P

I had similar issues, and I found Pioneer beans to be excellent so I stuck with them.  As you mentioned Costa don't put a roasted on date on their beans, or use bags with one way valves.  The roaster is usually going every day, but you just have to hope that they rotate their stock properly.  When I asked what the roasted on date was I got treated like I was a moron for asking.  Also I had similar issues with blonding early, probably grind related, but at the time my rocky wasn't really up to scratch either.
