After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Sunbeam EM4800 w/ stiff operating dial

edited January 1970 in Espresso Machines
I have a Sunbeam EM4800 - had it for a while and can get reasonable results.

The "operating dial" (the main control - front and centre) has become stiffer and stiffer.  Finally got so stiff that I stripped the machine down to investigate.  It turns out that the dial rotates some ceramic disks to switch the hot water between the coffee and steam outlets (I guess that this is very similar to the workings of a mixer tap).  These disks seem to be coated in some sort of grease - presumably acting as a seal, and maybe as a lubricant.  This coating is very viscous causing the stiffness.  The disks themselves seem to be in good condition - no obvious scratches or lime scale.

The obvious solution to my problem is to remove the old coating and replace it.  I guess removing it will be relatively easy.  The big question is what to replace it with?  Presumably it needs to be high temperature, and food-safe.

Google "research" has got me nowhere yet.

Am I on the right track?
Any gotchas or hints?

  • Go to a Jaycar near you and get Inox MX6 high temp, water resistant, food safe grease http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=NA1032 KK
  • The job is done - the machine is back in operation and seems to be working as new.  (Well not quite - the knob is fine, but the O rings sealing the steam arm are leaking - job for next weekend!)

Looks like useful stuff for other projects too, so I got a tube.  For reference I found: $8 at Jaycar, $7 at Rays Tent City (with RACV card), $7 at BCF.

I never lube ceramic plates - be it in the medical OR coffee field. As to food grade.. Sorry that is more of a "wank" than reality....  With the small amounts involved and then going through a puck of grinds as a filter...  The stuff would need to strong enough to kill you on touch,  to worry about any small amount that might leach it's way to the cup. It is all about context and KDR
I ended up lubricating them (using the tiniest amount of aforementioned MX6).  I couldn't face the thought of two surfaces rubbing without some form of lubrication, nor there not being something to stop water leaking out.  If this turns out to be a mistake I'll strip it down again and do the job properly! I was imagining "food grade" more for the taste of it rather than it being poisonous.  I don't know what Castrol LMM tastes like, but the smell is enough to make me wary. Sorry, don't know what "KDR" means in this context. Thank you both for your help.  Most useful.
