After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
I exercise so I can eat healthily but without guilt if I crave a treat. I would just up my energy expended rather than cut out coffee. Weight loss and maintenance is not as simple as energy in less than energy out, because every body is different. The acknowledgment of this fact in the article is the best part of the piece in my opinion.
Complete bollocks. Even if caffeine did in some way allow weight gain, people generally have it when they NEED to be awake, thus are burning more energy. Additionally, there are so many more problems they should be focusing on - soft drinks, juices, and the general fat arses just getting LAZY. Even with coffee, the culture of requiring it faster, easier, simpler is just happening more and more. People find making a cup of coffee too hard, and want a simple pod solution, because they just can't be bothered learning something. In the last hundred years we've gone from needing to do everything manually (cooking etc) to some people not actually knowing how to cook AT ALL. People want Instant coffee and fast food. A cup of coffee is far better for the body than a can of Red Bull, and you don't need a study to prove that. People walk (or drive) into McDonalds to be told boldy on the signage that the average daily intake of energy is 8700kJ, and don't think twice about kicking back a double whopper meal, and better make it a large. As BrettH said above, every body is different, not to mention if you have a desk job, and do absolutely no physical exercise, that daily intake might be closer to 3000kJ to maintain a healthy weight (though you still won't be healthy, you'll just have low body fat - something that people can't seem to grasp). It's now a culture of "I'm getting fat, I'll join a gym! Now I have no time, so I'll eat take away food every night" - the vicious circle goes on.
So to loose weight jump on <smoking company> 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :stir :stir :stir :stir
I've read of people TAKING UP smoking to reduce the size of their unborn baby, so sure, why not. (Also, seeing as this site is of a semi commercial nature and there is a company that might be taken to task, it's probably a good idea to actually remove the brand name, as I can see sketchy legal ground on the Smoking Advertising legistlation - the world we live in ::) )
I read once the best way to GAIN weight is to go on a calorie controlled diet.
Weight loss is a MENTAL issue, not a physical issue. By changing your approach to eating into a numbers game without any thought process behind it, you're doomed to fail. You'll crave like crazy, and be so hungry because you still haven't moved onto the lower kJ/100g anyway. By ONLY looking at kJ, you sacrifice the good foods to eat those you crave. 10 apples is around equivalent in kJ to 100g of chocolate.....and how full would you be after the chocolate??
Young, bright eyed and bushy tailed with double degrees in this and that, an automatic passport to making outrageous statements. The fact of the matter is that it's not a level playing field, we are all genetically different and our bodies are programmed to react differently to food intake, I'm fortunate and am able to eat and drink whatever I want, it has little affect, Mrs DB on the other hand eats a fraction of what I do and has to watch her weight constantly. "caffeine causes the body to pile fat on." I'd like to see some scientific evidence to support this. ::)

Now lets see, we're sitting watching evening TV, comes coffee time and I go through the process of making our beverage's of choice, then comes the big question, What would you like with your coffee dear, 10 apples or 100 grams of chocolate, think I know what the answer is gonna be. :D

Changing what you eat has an effect on your body - eat low calories for some time with no other lifestyle changes, the body gets better at processing them. Change lifestyle, and the body changes behaviour. It is only partly about genetic differences. My considered recommendation - if your weight is not at a healthy level, best start is to eat wider variety of food and participate in wider variety of activities. Worry about quantities of each after that. Those who are underweight also have serious lifestyle issues that need addressed and they are just as difficult to resolve (sometimes more so due to societal pressures and the near constant bombardment of 'lose weight' adverts). Hmm, chocolate or green apple flavour with my coffee. Hmm

Depends on what notes are in your coffee. Some of this third wave underroasted stuff and a wedge of lemon would go nicely

I do NOT want to see scientific evidence. If a few 100mg of a substance can cause massive weight gain, then why don't they work on the opposite and find the one that causes the weight loss?? Oh wait, it's because it's stupid.
I am skinny And don't get me started on weight / stupid refined sugar is the culprit The body can easily process fat but not sugar in high concentrations When lots of sugar is in your system the body concentrates on removing the sugar leaving the fat till later Well later never comes if one keeps on topping up the sugar So the fat builds up KK
Last diet I was on that worked for me said coffee was a no no. Well I ignored that part and stuck to my three double shot flat whites every day and still lost weight. I find that dieticians want their 15 minutes of fame and look for something to say that no one else has lately. Sort of like those exercise machines on morning TV where they look for a different direction to twist or turn in and spout that's it's the latest scientifically proven way to lose weight. There's one on now where you sit on your @r$e and swing side to side so you can watch TV while you "exercise". ::)
So..... where is the sighted study showing that coffee causes weight gain? :head: This looks like one of those A causes B. B causes C. Therefore A causes C. D contains A therefore D is bad. Caffeine causes stress which causes high glucose levels, the glucose doesn't get used, then the glucose goes back into the body and becomes fat...... Huh? Coffee contains caffeine therefore coffee makes you fat. Salt causes high blood pressure, high blood pressure causes heart attacks. Therefore salt causes heart attacks. Then a study shows that people that have a slightly higher intake of salt have a lower rate of heart attacks. Being over weight causes many different health issues. Therefore you should within the "healthy range". Yet another study comes out and finds that people that are slightly above the "healthy range" have a lower mortality rate.. Stupid article.
And don't get me started on weight / stupid refined sugar is the culprit
I'll take it a step further and say it's all refined foods KK not just the sugar. And it's not the coffee, but what the fools add to it. Stupid soy decaf extra extra caramel bucket-o-chino with 5 sugars, "but I drink the low fat" :head:
Harvard school of public health say drink coffee. good enough for me. some of you might be surprised at other do's and dont's. oh and poison can be good in moderation. ask anyone recovering from a stroke who is on a daily dose of rat poison
hey, long time lurker, first time poster. this is a topic close to my heart so i will throw my 2c in. 1) caffeine causes an increase in cortisol secretion http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2257922/http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16631247 2) cortisol is a hormone secreted by the adrenal gland in response to things like stress and consumption of caffeine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cortisol 3) high levels of cortisol causes an increase in storage of body fat (in particular, belly fat) http://cortisolconnection.com/ch6_2.php also, since stress increases cortisol secretion, the 2 (stress + caffeine) can work hand in hand to help you put on weight. the article, while radically oversimplifying things, is essentially true: coffee can help make you fat. how much this is a factor is debatable, but the science is there to support it. add in the sugar content and insulin response of a 16oz large, milky

Awww. I'm a fat 82 - but I rock a finer booty than derrilex  While I think the post above is well thought out, I'd love to see someone analyse the difference of drinking one coffee vs 1 cup of soft drink.
