After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

My New Toy.

Today I popped into Simply Coffee at Kent town and came away with...

A Simonelli Oscar!!!

Most people who know me from the other site know I have had a gaggia classic (a damn fine machine which, alas has been coming to the end of its days) for many years.

Mr Taxman was nice to me this year, although not nice enough for me to get my hearts desire (giotto), so after tossing up between the Brevile E900 and the Oscar, I decided to stick with the Italians and my budget and got the simonelli.

I am sooooo excited. I have just set it up and now need to wait for it to heat up and go pour some shots.  ; ^-^

  • Congratulations on your purchase I am sure that you will be very satisfied And as we all like progress reports of many happy days ahead and a photo or two wouldn't go astray Pleas keep us in the loop  :thumb: KK
  • I had an oscar and loved it! its a amazing beast of a machine, i'm sure you'll love it too
  • The only issue I seem to be having is the double pourer thingy doesn't seem to be at a 180 degree angle to the portafilter handle unless it is quite loose. I just tried pulling a few shots and I think I am under dosing as the puck is soggy. Patience is going to have to be a virtue I think  :D

The spouts can be screwd or unscrewed as required They also will change position as the rubber ring softens and or wears down KK
  • Thanks KK. I will just leave it loosish for now, it doesn't seem to be affecting the pour. Just enjoying my first coffee. Not perfect, it tastes a bit harsh, although that could be the beans I am using (purchased a few days ago at another shop) and the machine 'bedding in'. Will take a while to get used to the fast milk frothing  Very happy with my purchase. Here goes another big learning curve.  :coffee2:
  • Huge congratulations Lucinda.  I'd love to read your review in our review thread if you want to do one.  I'm sure many have tossed up and will continue to do so between the machines you were considering.  Your feedback would prove interesting to many of us and compelling to those following behind you.  Congratulations again  :thumb:
  • Thanks Brett. To be perfectly honest. I've had nothing to do with the Breville and have not used one so cannot really pass judgement on that. What it came down to for me was the price, and that it is an Italian machine. Try as I might, I cannot go past my made in china snobbery (although I do have some great chinese made appliances) when it comes to coffee stuff. This morning I made my second coffee, and it was pretty good. I pulled the shot a bit sooner and it's was a vast improvement. I am still using some older beans, so not expecting that delicious red crema I was used to getting with the Gaggia, but once I am into full roasting again and get used to the machine (now known as Lola  :D) it wont be long.
  • Nice buy Lucinda.  I think if I had the same choice between machines I would have gone for the Oscar too.  What colour did you get?  Do they fit an antivac to these now? And more importantly congratulation for sticking to your budget!  That must have taken some willpower! Enjoy your machine, and may you have many many lovely coffees from it! :)

Spouts should be left where they are as the handle will move round as the seal wears over time. Machines dont really bed in......their owners do as they retrain themselves to use the new equipment in comparison to the old  ;) Soggy puk could be any combination of the following: under dose; grind too fine; older beans / grinds. Grind / dose / tamp for the new machine is not necessarily same as the old, and you will work it out over time to best effect.  :)
  • It's all good now fresh coffee. This isn't my first machine and for many years (before it had a trendy name) I was a Barista in a cafe so I had a fair idea how to sort things out. I have my 'eye' in now. No real issues at all. Just got to get used to the power of the steam wand  ??? I did mention to the Grumpy one that I may just need a larger jug, and he said 'okay'  ??? ??? ??? Enjoying a lovely cup of sidamo right now as we speak.  :coffee2:
