After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

  • I stress that this would NOT be a deal killer by any means, but there was a discussion a few pages back about the side the steam wand should be on - most of us came down on the 'left' side of the preference chart.   • There are only a few things that I think need improved on the Londinium and they are pretty minor issues.  They are a better quality looking switch and relocated, plumbable drip tray, and that's about it.  Really what arm the steam on it usually down to what you've had before and liked, it doesn't make it any more or less useable. I would also love to know more about the pros and cons of the single vs twin spring design.  Does it make any noticeable difference in the cup.  Maybe Reiss could discuss this more considering he's gone single on the L1 and twin on the L2 & L3.  There's obviously something he's trying to achieve with the twin spring or he would have dropped altogether. Reiss, I'm happy to do a review of the Quick Mill & The Londinium I side by side if you want to send me one to test! ;)
  • Absolutely - if my first machine had had a RHS steam wand I'm sure that'd be my preference. It's pretty inconsequential.
  • Mine did, it was a Lucy (Silvia + Rocky) then same for the San Marino if I remember correctly, then left for the lusso, and left again on the Achilles. :) I hold the jug in my non-dominant hand, and turn steam on/off & steady the jug with my dominant hand.  Works for me either way, but I must admit the lusso was a pain to do it like that with the knobs on the side.  The achilles is fine because the knob is right in front of me, and the Londinium should be the same. :) Can't wait for someone to land on of these in Australia!  Doesn't anyone have upgraditis? ???
  • LOL I have upgraditis but no money to support it at present, well no saved money anyway :) I'd be interested in knowing about the spring situation as well.
  • Videoing in a tight space makes it look awkward. Steam arm placement is personal preference. When you're only using it for 9-16 seconds it's not really of great significance. Think of it as learning to drive on the left. The same skills are used when driving on the right (eg in Europe) It will take no time at all to adjust. Hope the review made sense.
  • I agree it's a non issue. I only brought it up because we'd had the discussion with Reiss about arm placement and most of us preferred a left wand - Francino reckon right is better tho. I'm pretty tired ATM tho and found your arm contortions funny in light of the previous conversation, my exhaustion and generally juvenile sense of humor. ;)

    Reiss did discuss this on his blog, and most notably mentioned that the group can be configured for either single or double springs...if the owner has the inclination to change it. !

    All I can find on his blog is a statement "After that you get to play around with different springs, including the addition of a second spring if you wish, which also has a big impact on the taste" He doesn't actually say how it has a big impact!  I'm just interested because the twin spring idea got dropped like a hot spud, but retained for the L2 & L3.  Reiss did say at the time that it was so they didn't have to add weight to the machine to stop it turning over when the lever was pulled. So, my question still stands.  How big an impact does the second spring make, and are you missing out on something in the cup (something noticeable) if you don't have the second spring.
  • Haven't read the blog but going by what I read here there seem to  ergonomic factors as well as flavour differences. Just because there are differences in the cup doesn't mean one is better than the other in all cases. it is quite possible they are both excellent and one just works better within each overall machine configuration. I would like to know more.
  • I agree UMN, but I suppose I would like to know more.  I know one wont be better than the other but it would be nice to have a comparison between 1 spring and 2.  Does it taste different, are the shot times different etc.

    Playing the devil's advocate: If funds are a problem and you already have a late model high end home use espresso machine, then it is probably reasonable to say that to sell one to fund the other will cost you dearly (as in you will not realise anywhere near what you paid for the giotto at new price), so the differential to purchase another new machine will "cost ya". Think on what you hope to achieve by doing the changeover, and do you think you will afterwards consider the difference in character of the espresso achieved due to the changeover, and the cost to get it, to have been a worthwhile excercise. Only you as an individual can answer that. ie, be careful to  buy for the right reasons (for you), and not simply because you have been wound up by all these discussions in these forums, to expect some kind of hitherto never before achieved espresso & espresso machine nirvana. This is not the same set of questions I would ask someone that is coming from a machine that produces a far lesser standard of home use espresso and is seeking the obvious difference in quality that you get when you changeover from a base model machine to a high end machine (irrespective of brand / model / type). hope that helps.

    But of course!  A task happily done.  As soon as I can sell some other old hobby stuff this fine L-1 will be on my bench, and photos and videos will follow. Kudos to Reiss for taking on such a daunting task as going head to head with the Italians, sort of like football espresso :laugh:  I think the UK will win it..
  • Nah, when it comes to machinery the Italians just OWN some niches... There are sports cars... And there are Ferraris... There are motorbikes... And there are Ducatis or even quirkier Guzzi's... Jaguars may be nice... But mention Maserati and well... Italians win again... Supercars? Italians have Pagani... British have what? A car called Noble??? Nah, when it comes to the thought of fine machinery... Italians win... Now all they have to do is translate the word 'reliable' and put that into real practice... Don't get me wrong, I love the philosophy Reis  has put into this machine... It's just that pommie 'stiff upper lip'....  Best of British... And all that... Cracks me up... Oh yeah... I want one too!

  • Yep, the Japanese make some pretty reliable cars.  The Italians make some beautiful cars.  The British contribution to beauty is the Aston Martin Series of vehicles.  So, we need to get the Japanese to make lever machines???? Reiss and his L-I seem to be headed on the right track.  The Italians have been doing it longer and all the manufacturers seem to have little quirks with their machines and their own way of dealing with it. If the L-I is a roaring success then maybe Reiss can purchase an Aston Martin Vanquish and have the best of both worlds:-)
  • I decided I was not getting any younger so I ordered an L-I yesterday.  I realize that it will be a second batch of production so only time will tell as to the time it takes to get one to me.  I ordered the Standard w/tank and plumb in kit. I have been following the Posts on HB about the people who have already received their new machines and it is interesting.  The packaging looks very tight and clean but I saw no pallets.  I really hope it comes on a pallet.  The UPS, Fed-Ex guys really know how to test packaging :o
