After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

It's that time of year again, roses and grape vines need pruning the weeds are taking hold and something needs to be done, so the next couple of weeks will be devoted to tidying the garden up prior to spring.
It all needs to be done and dusted before the end of July as Heather and I are off to Vietnam for a couple of weeks in early August, will be nice to escape the cold of SA for a while and get a bit of warmth into the bones. ;D

    Sounds like a good plan... Here is hoping the ash cloud moves on by then. I keep talking about going to Vietnam with my wife as she want to travel, but Italy is her main objective...  It all costs and I have been advised that the place I work for is under contract and that we may yet have a 35% staff reduction... Oh well, at least there is good coffee  ;D
    Morning AM, sorry to hear your job could be in jeopardy, lets hope your not included in the 35%. Italy is on our list of countries to visit as well, perhaps next year. ;)

    we're in the process of putting in an edible garden in the nature strip out the front of the cafe, which hopefully the local community will embrace and contribute to - including a couple of raised garden beds - which will complement our existing herb garden in the planter bot out the front should be finished some time this week! P

    I've given up on veg etc, what with the cost of water, labour involved and then the birds and garden pests decimate everything prior to harvest it just ain't worth the effort. Sadly it's cheaper and easier to visit Big W. :(

    You can have small greenhouses, as long as they're no bigger than a garden shed without a DA from council.  A physical barrier is much more effective than trapping, baiting, etc.

    Hey AM, I have a great recipe for Rabbit.  You debone it and throw the meat into a pot with Red Wine, Veges, and a heavy Chicken Stock.  Bring to the boil and add a clean stone from the garden.  When the stone is soft, throw away the Rabbit and eat the stone!  Physical barrier eh... I have a cunning plan...

    That is how you cook a Crow... Rabbit in an Onion and Orange sauce is one of the best... Just got to remember to spit out the buckshot.  My Father in law uses a shotty, while I much prefer a 22 or Traps.
    Buckshot, Buckwheat... is there a difference?  How's that for a segue back OT!

    I deserve a beer! Got to love preparing a garden bed for planting a few vege's in a recent volcanicly active area. Rock pile on the left is from the last 3 ' of the bed. Those and 1/2 a large bin of Buffalo and cooch grass  :head: Off to the Nursery tomorrow for some seeds and seedlings. :) [attachimg=1]

    We just did some landscaping to revamp a tyred looking garden ourselves I will post some photos when I get a chance to take some However just over the last few days I have been busy planting out the garden beds Today I planted some Clivias of differing colours - Clivias are originally from South Africa KK

    On this topic - does anyone know where to get tubestock of kangaroo paw for cheap? I want about 20 or so plants for a garden bed with lots of colours. I have found a few places online, but hoping for somewhere someone has actually tried out.

    I've been to pretty well all of the ones on that list, and they have all been the larger plants (so >$10 each). I'm hoping for say, $2.50 per plant.

    Update on this: I got kangaroo paw tubestock for $2.75 from the markets a few days after the last post. All of them still alive! :)

    The possums keep eating my veggies!  They get scared easily so I've used little spinny windmills, and put foil around the place.  When the wind blows it makes noise and they stay away.  If there is no wind I'm buggered and they get in!  Arrrrgggghh. Love them fluffy little native creatures, but please can they bugger off and eat something else!

    I'm hearing you mate.  Gardening Australia really upsets me because they all say "oh you must grow your own veges for your health and carbon offsets and your children's future and..."! I'm growing mine so a team of turkeys can keep up their strength while they turn my beautiful yard into an enormous festering compost heap AND, so that a family of possums can find new and interesting places to defecate on my deck.  Arghhhhhhh!

    My garden as of today. Currently growing: Bok Choy Habanero Chillies Birds Eye Chillies Roma Tomatoes Rhubarb Cherry Tomatoes Oregano Italian Parsley Coriander Mint Purple Carrots Radish Beetroot Lettuce ...Might need some more garden beds!

    Went to harvest my beetroot today to do some good old fashioned Sunday pickling, to find what can only be Rat gnawing marks at the top of three of them - what is more annoying is that they weren't like that yesterday. So now I need to buy a cat or snake, but I fear it would end up like "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly", and I don't have room for a horse.

    Although my family have been growing vegetables for yonks  :-| I however prefer to grow fruit and citrus trees and herbs to use in cooking Last year we got some dwarf lemon trees and we transferred them to large pots Other potted trees are 2 varieties of Fig 1 white flesh 1 dark flesh Also a Pomegranate tree I have other in ground trees lemons, olives, ect Attachment not found.Attachment not found.Attachment not found.

    Today, I harvested my first Habanero. OH MY GOD. Touched it to my tongue, and my ENTIRE mouth is on fire. I have about 15 on there completely ripe. Must make chilli sauce this weekend. Highly recommend them - I suspect the heat this season has really made them shine.
