After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

I'm new here...

:stir    :head: HI          Have been a coffee drinker ,black & strong for 30+ years .Moved to espresso making around 10years ago with basic machines .Finally upgraded to Bezzera in 2011. Tried all pre roasted beans but could not find a suitable flavour .Along came Baby FZRR700.Sourced greens and both hobby +passion began.Learnt to roast by time -colour which has helped my exsperience and led me to modded BBM Correto then KKTO.i have now converted Tiffany turbo top to be able to use commercial heat gun (airflow-heat electronically controlled) as heat source. My other interests are gardening and granchildren plus coffee. After a series of operations my sporting interests were curtailed. As you can see coffee and family are my source of enjoyment.                                                         Thank you Barry&Kath
Welcome Brisbane buddy!  You are certainly in the right corner of the Internet to feed your habit and we love innovation and ideas.  Pictures of your setup and innovations would be very welcome in the roaster threads.  I can't wait to see what you've done!! Welcome again mate!

  • Hi all, My coffee journey started when I was working in kitchens through university, got a bit of an education on the drinking of coffee! I was given a Cafe Roma some years ago that I used to use with supermarket beans and a spice grinder (don't think I need to say much more about that!), about a year ago I received a BCG800 Smart Grinder, and then modded my Roma's baskets to be single walled, and I finally was able to  produce coffee that wasn't undrinkable! After a little while I started using a popcorn popper to roast coffee, and quickly moved on to a coretto style (Bread maker + heat gun). I've recently purchased a BES900 which is producing coffee a step above the old Roma, hoping I can get a few more espresso quality increments out of it! I Think I'll have to adjust the OPV though, as it sits at 13bar with a blind filter. Other than that, I use an Aeropress at work with a no-name hand grinder, and over summer I sometimes do cold brewed in a french press overnight. Got two kids, work as a System Admin in Canberra and drink my coffee as espresso, no adornments or additions!
  • A very warm welcome I'm sure that your coffee journey mirrors many others We are glad to have you on board  :thumb: KK

  • Hi All, Newbie, and at 29 found a love for coffee that I can't seem to stop!  :tearhair: Haven't ever been into coffee until recently, ironically I used to sell some consumer level machines (don't hate me too much!)... Also I am very interested in where you buy your beans from, I just go to the supermarket but not sure where else to go? Anyway cheers and drink up!
  • Welcome Droaks. 2 good options for beans. 1: go to your favourite cafe, they will usually sell you 250gm ($10- $15) of your favourite beans 2: save yourself a fortune, buy a small inexpensive roaster and green beans and DIY. I spent $400 on a Behmor roaster and now average about $17 per kg of coffee. This option also has the added benefit of having a new hobby but on the downside it becomes your coffee consumption will triple all in the name of research. I've been getting my green beans lately from beangreen.com.au Enjoy
  • Hi to all as my user name  says I am from Mallacoota inlet Victoria My name is Brendan I started out life as a wool classer sampler working for Australian Wool Testing Authority.I did not fit in with the culture of lunch at the pub and after work at the pub. From there I moved to Pomona Qld for 7 yrs with my partner. She missed the burbs went back to them I moved to Mallacoota where I work part time interest are photography, Fishing and of course  coffee this is just the overview of my life so far. MY coffee gear is a breville dual boiler,  smart grinder, stove top with gauge and frother and french press looking to upgrade the smart grinder to a vario I think still doing the research.  I have been buying most of my coffee from "mycuppa" excellent beans and great service I am also on cs forum

  • Welcome Mallacoota, I live just down the road from Pomona at Peregian. :)  The little town has Tim Adam's coffee being sold at a few cafes up there. Get posting and let us know the experience you've had with your Breville dual boiler.  There are a few forums mombers with these machines.

  • Hi Guys, I see a few friendly, familiar names. I'd just bought a used Anfim grinder on the eeb and was chasing some info on it. I turned a corner, became disoriented and ended up in here. I like it here, it seems quite nice.  ;D Now, what was I looking for....? Mark
  • Welcome Mark.  If you can't find what you're looking for, start a thread with some photos (http://www.bestcafes.com.au/forum/grinders/anfimecm-grinder/msg35046/#msg35046) and you'll soon be awash with info.  :thumb:
  • Hi! I am new here. Long time home-brewer (of beer) who has recently been turned on to the kind of similar art of cold brewing coffee. Figured I'd join here after reading some of the interesting posts over in the "other brewing methods" pages. Look forward to learning more.

Your very welcome macron As with most things food and drink related we all know that the product in question has several ways that it can be made or prepared Don't forget to also add your views in the beer and ginger beer threads  :thumb: KK
  • welcome mac what sort of beers? I confess my hone brewing is basic and amateurish, but enjoyable nonetheless.
  • oh hay thanks for the welcomes, everyone! I have been brewing since high school (am now 30ish...) and I tend to favor the darker brews eg stout, porter, as well as  heavily-hopped Pale Ales that bash you over the head with hops. These styles are a bit more forgiving of technique and facilities available to the casual home brewer compared with more delicate styles eg. pilsner, dark lagers/dunkle that require lower temperature fermentation and more expensive ingredients to achieve decent results. Getting into cold brewing has been not that much of leap from home brewing in terms of the much-longer preparation time required (compared to other coffee styles), and the capacity for experimentation in technique seem to be parallel eg. for home brewing using different amounts and types of hops and malts is similar to using different blends of beans and ratios of water for cold brewing, as well as fiddling with the brewing time. Also, I tend to cold brew coffee in largish volumes, so the skills learned from bottling beer have come in handy...
  • Hello all.  My name is David, and I am a Paramedic presently living and working in Townsville.  I have only recently moved there from Aspley in Brisbane. I have several cheap Sunbeam and Breville espresso machines, and yesterday acquired an EM 6910 for free, so have been scouring this and the other forum for as much info as I can find to try and get it in good working order. I also roast at home with a Behmor. So that's me, hello :-)
  • Welcome again David.  I hope you get the 6910 up and running.  If you search for "6910 Anger Management" on google you'll find a plethora of info from Mark the guru!
  • Hello all, Lurked for a while and decided to join up. Started with a stove top coffee maker as a uni student back in the late 80's complete with a propeller type bean smasher/grinder. First machine was the ubiquitous krups black box thingy once working. Had various brevs/sunbeams after that. Got myself an icoffee roaster a little while ago , and of course lead to further upgrades, now have a nice ECM mech IV profi and a mazzer mini, should cure the desire for any upgrades for a long time... Pretty keen (all grain ) home brewer, pinotphile (get some strange looks with that one sometimes) and general foodie. Inherited the "why buy that, i can build that " gene off the old man, and have recently sold my surgery and have become a boatbuilder. Building a 12.5m sailing cat in which will hopefully circumnavigate with the kids ( aged 6&4 at present) until they have to go to high school, although that seems to be stretching to grade 9 now, with some mumblings of boarding school. Have had a sailing vessel of some kind since I was 10, this is my first with more than one hull though. Might be able to make some money whilst cruising as a floating cafe ;D Already thinking of ways of using my ramp/soak PID control box I made for brewing to control a bigger roaster, don't think I'll tell my partner about that yet  . cheers
