After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

FS: Current crop speciality green coffees from around the world

Hi everyone,

As some of you know I've been looking for ways to reduce my annual outgoings since my spinal cord injury. As I have been roasting for my local church services (non-profit) and go through about 80kg/year by myself, I figured I'd look into buying some beans from a wholesaler instead of a retailer, and a couple of you encouraged me by suggesting that you'd like a few kg of my choices. I've put this on my credit card, and have tried to price at exactly cost plus freight to me and bagging expenses. I would prefer to be no more transparent about costs than this except to mods, as I think it's not fair to put wholesale prices in a retail environment - simply put, FOB has no overheads! While I'm happy to do this a couple of times a year, and may add an Ethiopian and a Panama to this list if interest allows, I'm going to be using the sponsors for most of my other bean purchases.

So I've placed an order with for some whole sacks of beans:

Guatemala Finca Santa Clara (69kg)
While this isn't an auction lot, this farm placed #6 in Cup of Excellence in 2012, #3 in 2001, and also had final round finishes when entering lots in 2009 and 2010. This coffee scored 93 points on Coffee Review in 2010, and this year's lot was so popular I managed to snaffle the last bag.

In the cup, you'll get stone fruit, peach, sugar browning, chocolate, red apple. Citric and malic acidity, notably that of green apples, and a creamy mouthfeel.

Roasting Notes: Hard, dense and durable, this coffee is pretty versatile and roasts well across a wide gamut of temperatures. If you like the lighter apple and peach notes, pull it before it gets too far into second crack - otherwise you're looking at a smooth and chocolatey coffee with a bit less interest!

Price: $14.20/kg

El Salvador Finca Alaska (40kg)
This is one of the stand-out coffees in any roaster's stash. In 2007, this farm placed #8 in the El Salvador Cup of Excellence competition. It is owned by Ernesto Mendez, who also owns Finca La Ilusi

  • I will take ten kilos or maybe slightly more. Most keen on the Guatemala and el Salvador, would like a couple kilos of the Brazil, maybe a kilo of the Rwanda just to try (wasn't impressed with the Rwanda musasa I had as a siphon at a cafe before, but that is a single cup so not a fair test) I realise you don't want to weigh and ship lots of small bags, so if any other VIC folks are  after some, we can perhaps share a single batch and shipment cost. I am happy to collect from a freight depot and repack. Depending on who/where, may be able to deliver when I am out and about anyway.
  • Hey UNM - I should be a bit clearer that there's no requirement to take more/less than you want of anything - as long as  I can weigh it I can probably ship it! Setting maybe 5kg of something plus whatever you like is probably fairer, but flexibility is easy for me. re: the Musasa, that's a really fair comment - a lot of people don't roast it a few different ways and see where it ends up, but instead treat it like an Tiger Mountain or Terranova or Gayo - a lot of the time it's over-roast for siphon and ends up muddy and earthy. I think it's often badly roasted, but while I've usually hated it, I've found that it's very much a coffee which sells on it's name, so I think roasters often don't make enough effort to 'get it right'. When it's good it's very, very good, and when it's bad, it's ugly.
