Sorry guys, didn't search for an old thread...... running low on time......

About to move from Sydney to the Hunter Valley - woohoo!!!!!!

Currently with Optus, been great for 6 years, no coverage where we are headed.

Options are Telstra or Westnet/iinet...........

HELP!!!!!!!

Anyone got any useful feedback?

I am confused Rider, surely you can go with any of the dozens of ISP's that resell Telstra Wholesale? I dont think Westnet dont exist anymore, iiNet bought them out. Are you saying both Telstra & iiNet have DSLAMMs in the exchange, if this is the case, definitely go iiNet, if its all Telstra ports then any of the good ISP's like Internode (also part of iiNet, but still have separate network and plans), or iiNet, just dont go Telstra - on principal!

Well I guess I can from what you say...... Didn't really check this out as being a semi internet blinkered idiot, but found out yesterday when I wanted to move my optus from here to there...... I have no idea what DSLAMMS are but from what I have read westnet, which still exists if you google it, or iinet piggyback off telstra. That is not area specific, that is just in general. I think in the Hunter Valley they would be piggy backing........ not the biggest area.....

Do you have a phone number for where you will be? Whirlpool always had a good plan chooser at http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/, which can tell you what is available where you are. I have presumed you will be near Maitland, in which case http://www.yourbroadband.com.au/exchanges.php?Exchange=MAIT shows you all the providers around there (you can plug in an address and it should show you what exchange). If that is not the town you will be in, look here http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/australian_exchange_guide and then change the code in the above URL and see who is available

Not as yet mate, settle on the place next Friday. Owners moved on the long weekend as they had already bought another place. Basically after what people think is good, bad, indifferent. Also eliminating the anti - Telstra stuff if my choice is limited........

At the top of the yourbroadband link I gave above, you can just plug in the address and see what is around. I am with Internode, and as they offer a free mirror of the newsgroups I would be foolish to move anywhere else for my news update needs.

I know we are talking internet but just letting you know that Telstra is all that works out here when it comes to mobiles, Optus works in Newcastle, once you hit Maitland it's hit and miss and anywhere outside of that you are really lucky if it works at all. We use aanet here at present on ADSL2+, we've looked at lots of others, a lot service the area but yes all Telstra lines.

I have been with iinet about nine years now. Had a couple issues when moving house, but net reliability and performance good. See if you can go naked. there are several advantages. Also check out if mynetfone can give you a naked dsl2+ plan at the new address. They are cheap and generally reliable. You may even be able to keep your current phone number - talk to them by email. it will depend on availability of spare copper between new address and exchange. All isp's can check by address as well as phone number Edit. Actually mynetfone may not be able to help. I think they are an optus reseller.

Westnet still exist and are part of the iinet group as is internode (I'm with internode on a Telstra rim and have no issues and love the usenet too) There are many Telstra resellers but to save decent $$$ you'll probably have to bundle your landline. Most ISPs have off net plans which run off Telstra's network. Internodes are called easy reach. If you go iinet make sure you add the turbo boost speed pack! Check out whirlpool but in my opinion stuck with the well known companies and avoid the small unknowns. Poor value, and support.

Whirlpool list all known ISP's I live in rural area so I use mynetfone with voip good service and price and even more important is tech support based in Australia to me. I left aanet when support went offshore and then left Exetel when they went offshore. From there to internode for 2 years good company good service but I got better deal with more download and free voip for a year, had a few issue's most Telstra's fault but the tech support has been excellent with updates by rep to my mobile. Never been kept in the loop as well as this before, so I highly recommend them. All the others except node they fell to pieces with support when they went offshore with support, not to mention the fact these should be Aussie jobs.
