After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

It is great to see the resurgence in popularity of lever machines.

    Yeah .. lovely looking machine Seems like a suped up Ponte Vecchio Lusso. This is a good example of when people have commented on the build quality of the Lusso being sub-standard and then go on to say that if it was a quality build it would cost a lot more. This machine is what the PV Lusso could have been ... costing 3x the price of a single group Lusso for the Introductory discounted price .. or 4x what the Lusso costs for the regular price. At 3.5 or 4.5k .. I'd be pretty surprised if people chose the new Salvatore lever over a Bezeera Strega. The $AUS dollar has also dropped recently making it more expensive if you imported one from the USA? Of course the $AUS has lost ground against the Euro .. if purchasing a PV Lusso from Italy.

    Yep, I largely agree.  I'd always get a Strega if I was going to go lever but why is there no high-end thermostable  Pavoni-type lever?  I love it that I can vary the shot with that thing but hate it that is only good for two or three shots.  The spring lever doesn't do it for me... Otherwise I'd have had a Strega over the Diadema Junior Extra.  If I can't change the pressure I may as well have a PID and the ability to stop the shot when I want it to stop. Still... If some kind benefactor .... ;)

    Not to be contrary, but it's really nothing like a Lusso at all, except in colour! :) The size of the boiler is 6.5 litres. That's 2.8 X the size of my L1 and 2.16 times of the Lusso, which doesn't have a tank per-se, you just fill straight into the boiler. Whereas this thing also has a nearly 4 litre tank. So that's a total of 10.5 Litres of water sloshing around in this thing, compared to 5.3 on my L1 and 3 on the Lusso. It should be noted that the Salvatore appears to be using the same group as the L1, but by comparison, this thing is a monster: [attachimg=1] [attachimg=2] Also, it has a rotary pump in there which of course the Lusso does not. And a bafflingly small element given the boiler size: 400w less than the L1 but double the Lusso. Which is an interesting choice for such a large boiler - They trying to heat nearly triple the volume of water of the L1 with only 83% of the heating power. Anyway, given it's size and commercial components, there's no wonder this is $4,500, but it's really not much like a Lusso at all!

    Just a couple (or three  ;) ) random thoughts. Much seems to be made about the groups used on whatever machines be they modern (commercial) machines or lever. Wrt lever groups, while some different brand machines appear to share common groups, they are fitted to different design and build machine inards.....so will not behave in the same way despite looking the same at the front of a machine. Also different machine builders can request (if they wish to) different specs internally in the body of the group. Same end result, looks the same on the outside but different machines perform differently...as usual it is the total package that requires assessment rather than the sum of the components. No comparison between a Lusso with is domestic sized including the group, to any commercial size machine with a commercial sized group; I hope no one is importing machines into Australia from the US (unless they are specifically built for our market) because the 110 V machines would need to be totally rewired to suit and have all their electrical components changed over. There fore (to my way of thinking anyway), comparisons of price between Oz market and US market machines are irrelevant. Enjoy your coffee machine whatever it is, its just a means to an end and relies on the operator for it to be able to do the biz to the best of its designed ability  :)

    I must be the only person around here that thinks they look fairly similar in appearance? Apologies if I said in my above post that my AU$1,000 Ponte Vecchio was exactly the same machine as the AU$5,000 Salvatore.. and just as good - comparing each machine's build quality, componentry and features. Oh .. hang on? .. I didn't.

    Appearance is a subjective thing .. and we all have our own opinions on what's eye candy. So long as you blokes can also live with that.. I think the coffees I'm making are great .. you might rate them as sinkers .. but who cares .. I drink them, so what I think matters. Anyone disagree?

    Like the OP said .. it's good to see more levers coming on the market .. the more choice the better. I'd like to see more in the $1,200 - 2,000 range.

    It is quite possible to design a machine that works equally well on USA and European/ANZ power. The little Gaggia classic is a case in point. Simple jumpering  and vibe pump change) converts between the two as it is designed using two heating elements either in parallel or series.  Depending on sales volumes, it may well be better to over specify some components than hold two complete sets for different markets. Just saying.  I do agree that, for most people, direct importing any electrical goods from USA is not a wise choice, but under certain specific circumstances, it can work. Also, not everyone treats their machine as 'just a means to an end' - for some the machine is an important thing in and of itself.  Some folks get pretty obsessive about their coffee paraphernalia.

    OK, I'll bite. I am happy to respectfully disagree if you want a long involved philosophical discussion on thought, definition of self, and whether anything can be said to really matter. Always remembering (of course) that what I think may not matter. ;D As a wise man once said 'Enjoy your coffee machine whatever it is'
