Fiorenzato F71EK 71mm Conical

edited January 1970 in Grinders
Hey guys

Had a few beers night before last and ended up bidding on and winning a brand new in box fiorenzato conical grinder!!

Anyone have any idea what these are like? I saw a video about the WBC and the French barista used one in the comp in 2012. It has burrs that are roughly the same size as a robur, and that's about all I've got!

Excited and scared at the same time! Should arrive today or tomorrow.

  • Have heard of them but not seen one in the flesh You have the Electronic doserless model I am sure it will perform well Attachment not found.
  • That's the one KK. Didn't pay as much for it as I would have for a new mazzer mini so I'm quietly hopeful I got a great bargain. Have been wanting to grab a big conical since I sold my super jolly E.
  • If it's brand new, don't forget to allow a handful of kilos of grinding to allow for bedding in the blades KK
  • Thanks KK I was considering grabbing some Vitoria or the like from woolies in bulk to run through it to bed them in :)

OMG KK, you must have big hands.  The brand has been around for a while, not that well known in Australia but seem to have a bigger european presence.  They look like a quality machine. Did you buy the grinder off ebay?  I see Amanti coffee has a few F71 EK in black.  What did you pay? http://www.fiorenzato.it/gb/f71ek_gb.html Continuous micrometric grinding adjustment E Model = single-dose system Standard varnishing Standard fork Grinding adjustment with ring nut Power: 850 Watt Grinders conical disk of diameter: 71 mm Grinder rev.: 450/min (50 Hz)  - 500/min (60 Hz) Coffee bean container capacity: 1,5 Kg Net weight: 19 Kg Motor cooling = fan with thermostat activating only when the doser-grinder everheats Make sure you let us know how you go when it arrives.  I know someone that bought a grinder off that same seller and he had no issues.
  • Thanks Lacehim I had seen the specs prior to bidding, but was surprised to not see any online reviews at all. I watched a clip of it in the WBC and it looked ok so thought what the hell! Yep bought it from Amanti, brand new, black, unopened box, just shy of $900 (898 I think plus $25 delivery) so if it performs well I'll be stoked.  I was saving for a K10 WBC as I couldn't afford a K10 fresh or a konyE. Hopefully this is a close stand in to them. I will post pics when it arrives. Then I'll start working on a smaller hopper of some sort for it so it fits under my cabinets!!! Hopefully will arrive today or tomorrow.

  • OMGosh... I have a Fiorenzato f5 and it's awesome.... This conical will be out of this world.  I  almost bid against you but seriously...I currently have 5 grinders in the house capable of espresso for two cups a day and no money  We expect a full write up with photos Luke!!  Congratulations... It will be a simply stunning machine.  I've played with one but for not long enough for my liking ;)
  • oh wow those look pretty damn good definitely let us know how it goes! i sense grinder upgradetitis...
  • Usually, Bernard chucks in a kilo of "golden moka" beans with grinder sales. Not the best beans on the planet but far from the worst I have tried. They actually make a nice CP (cold process) coffee. Run them through and it will be bedded in well enough to get started. If you want  economical, but good quality beans to start off, you could do worse than: http://www.mycuppa.com.au/Barista-2x1kg-free/
  • Spoke with Bernard today. They forgot to ship the grinder yesterday but have sent t today by overnight courier. He offered to throw in 10kg of coffee to apologise. I thanked him but declined the extra as I home roast anyway. The overnight courier and the grinder at that price are enough :) will be interesting to try his blend though. I love Jeff's coffee, I order it every couple of months and then aspire to roast somewhere near that level of quality (I'm not even close obviously!) but I haven't tried his barista blend yet. Could be worth a go thanks :) Ps..  the lavatza was gonna get ground and composted not drunk
  • My sympathies to your compost Luke!  Hope you get a delivery soon!!
  • Wow, it's big! It's also fast, and quiet........ And it took me a while to get it dialled in, but i think i got there.  Using the Amanti beans at the moment (not too bad in milk), will give it a couple if days before i switch to my home roasted blend I've got going at the moment. Did i mention it's big...it dwarfs my Alex Duetto 2......  I need to chase down a small hopper, now to try to figure out what the OD of the Mazzer Hopper is (the extra short one that they sell as an add on for the mini).  Edit - 59mm way too small The ID of the throat of the fiorenzato is 69mm.  The hopper off a baratza precisio would fit if i ground a small lugg off it, which may be an option if i can't source anything else. pics..... • Wow, it's BIG!  Thought it would be! lol. Above the burrs there does seem to be quite a bit of space, so maybe you can just cover it with a glass or plastic cup to keep the beans in.  Should hold a dose. What's it like in the cup.  Did you notice a difference?
  • Haven't done any sorts of comparison yet. I'll run the kilo of beans that came with it through tomorrow before I try to do any comparisons. I will say it's stupidly fast compared to the K3 (and the SJolly I had) my EP double basket is full with a 5.2 second grind. I think they get faster when the burrs bed in a bit too. Also nice fluffy grinds. I have to say I'm pretty happy :)
  • Kudos Luke and welcome to the big conical club mate!  That looks awesome.... Kudos!!
  • Very interested to know how loud it is in comparison to ??? grinders.

I'll see if I can find an iPhone sound meter and test it against the K3 tomorrow
  • a video of it while you're at it if possible :D never knew this existed. had been considering a HG One for a long time because of its good price point but this is definitely making the choice harder

I've bought an a8 from Amarti send was aiming for one of these when Big G made me an offer on his K10 I couldn't refuse.  Running side by side Lux vs Rocky vs F5 (64mm) vs A8 (83mm) vs K10 I lost track of tasting and almost slipped into a caffeine induced sweaty coma.  Taste-wise there's nothing in it and everything in it.  The short blacks never tasted bad, just different.  I can't go back having enjoyed the consistency of the top end of grinders because I now have bragging rights and I alsofind it so easy to swap between blends with the K10.  My experience with Amarti on EBay was great and I enjoyed their beans also.  Obviously a slick operation but personally I'd always buy from Cosmorex or MyCuppa if I wanted the best coffee or was about to spend thousands.  Video, video, video!!!
  • Hey guys, heres a quick video, just a double shot being dispensed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysmhMN2XVvU Struggled with testing the noise levels as we have a lot of construction going on around our house at the moment! will try again tomorrow. Still working through the coffee that came with it

Quick and neat In fact quicker than my BNZ , but that could be the RPM speed between the 2 KK
  • In a totally unscientific test, i held my iPhone with a sound meter app running on top of the group handle as i ground into it. Compak K3 - peaked at 98 decibels (this peak was throughout the grind time) Fiorenzato - Peaked at 93 decibels (this peak was at startup and finish) I'm not sure how much 5 decibels is in real world noise to be honest. So i guess it's not as much quieter as i thought (it really does sound quieter), it's probably more of a factor of the fact that it takes under 5 seconds to grind a double dose whereas the K3 takes over 20.

  • Sound is measured exponentially. This means a rise in level of 10dB results in 10 times the volume, a rise of 20dB is 100 times the volume and so on. A rise of 5dB is about 3 times the volume (10 the power of 0,5). If you want to measure the sound, you need to hold the microphone at the same distance from the sound source as your ears are. By the way, any sound level above 85dB can cause hearing loss. You could handle 98dB for a while before damage is caused but it starts to get dangerous over 110dB
  • How is the grind retention?

    Oooo great question and welcome!!
  • Very good question.... My taste buds tell me it retains about a double........maybe 20grams Will dose it up with 100gms when I get back from holidays and test it for retention.

Cheers :) One more, how is the build quality and ease to access burrs/maintenance/cleaning? Thanks!
  • Without a better way to test it I ran it till empty, thumped it, banged it, ran it again, pulsed it, thumped it again and again etc etc. I didn't however disassemble the burrs..... I then weighed 25.1 grams of beans in, ran it, pulsed it etc 25.1 came out........took about 8 seconds of grinding I couldn't believe it, so I tried again This time repeat process but weighed 25.0 in, wouldn't believe it but 25.6 out :) ....... There must be some retention within the burrs but it's not too bad I'm guessing......... Won't know till I pull them apart which I will do in  a month or so. Build quality is as good as mazzer SJE was, and burr removal looks the same (collar looks identical) apart from a tab you depress as you unwind the collar (locking tab)..... So slightly more fiddly but still not bad If anyone lives near me at camden and wants a try they are more than welcome to come round and grind away.

Thanks so much for trying this!! I actually bit the bullet and bought one of these the other day. It should be in my hands on Tuesday. I am planning to weigh the first lot of beans. And see the resultant. That should be a good test as the burrs and chamber should be clean :) I am slo investigating the hopper issue as I'll have the same problem re cabinets ;)
  • Oh excellent! Yeah that will be a more reliable test!! Let me know what you come up with hopper wise, I'm using a takeaway cup with the bottom cut out at present for a hopper :)
