After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

I'm new here...

  • Hi, Im Dennis and I love a coffee (or two). I have an NS Oscar but am looking to upgrade. I grind with a Compak A8. Thanks for letting me join, Dennis
  • Hi Dennis, Welcome.  I just down graded to a NS Oscar! lol.  Great little machine IMO for the price.  Do you have any mods done to it?  Mine was second hand and came with the OPV mod, and anti-vac mod, and I'm only running BSG (Breville Smart Grinder) at the moment. Michael

Welcome Dennis.  I too have an a8 but it's sitting idle at the moment despite new burrs.  They're a terrific grinder and sooooo quiet!  Join in the threads... Th more, the merrier!
  • I went from a smart grinder to the a8. World of difference. I didn't really know what it was when i first bought the grinder. So little information on the web about it but have found it really good. Hardly any mess and relatively quiet and fast. The Oscar has been a good machine. No mods for this one. Was thinking about the anti vac mod but thought its just as easy to release the pressure. The OPV mod is interesting but just thought there is not enough out there to convince me it would make much of a difference. Better to save my dollars and buy a 'better' machine. I do get some great shots with the oscar and a8 so don't really know what to expect when i get an upgrade. Time will tell.
  • Hi All Noidea's the current nom de guerre but my real name is Darryn and I used to go by something else at the snobby forum. My coffee stuff is a EM6910 that I was give and brought back from the brink of death a few years ago and and are still using it with a EM480. I think I can pull a decent shot with it and do my best to get the glossy paint with my milk texturing but my latte art skills suck big time ;) I used to home roast with a corretto for a while but since starting a family it's been easier to drop over to Dimattina's in Perth and pickup something fresh, but who knows I might start roasting again some day. My current project is a Rancilio MD40 that I bought from that auction site which "runs but wont grind" which just turned out to have had the grind adjustment wound in too fine and the adjuster lock tab pushed in so you couldn't see it! I'm in the middle of trying to convert it to doserless and then maybe add some sort of a grind timer mod. The next step of my journey is to acquire some sort of smallish footprint HX machine that needs a bit of TLC as whilst the EM6910 is fine for making a couple of coffees for my wife and myself when we get houseful of friend around it struggles to keep up on the milk front. Anyway enough rambling from me!
  • Welcome another West Australian to the Crema Forum Hope to see you're contributions on the forums  :thumb: KK

Welcome, in the mean time have you tried using a single floor basket?  cheers! C-
  • Greetings. I live in Melbourne and have a passion for good coffee. While I used to love coffee for a long time and visited coffee plantations in Costa Rica, really got into it when I bought the Rancillo Silvia V3 and the Rocky. Love espressos and long black as the body can't handle milk. Next adventure is to get into roasting. Planning to get the Behmor 1600 Plus and looking to learn roasting and improve my coffee making skills. Looking forward to learning from this group and contributing in any way I can. Thanks.
  • hey guys..I am new here as well...do you know if there is a job offer section somewhere? Cheers
  • Hello everyone!  I'm temporarily based in Sydney but will be going back to the mothership early next year.  I was exposed to really great coffee here in Australia since 2008 but wasn't really aware about specialty coffee until about 2 years ago.  Since then my interest has expanded from just a consumer then a brewer and now home roaster.  It's such a fascinating hobby!

Welcome to the forum , stay a while and tell us some coffee stories  KK
  • Welcome draeger Enjoy your stay and don't be shy. Chester
  • Hey Guys. I stumbled into coffee at 17 when I left Adelaide and moved to Sydney. I hated coffee, but my 11 year older brother had a coffee cart in the UNSW and employed me as a L-plater barista and forced me to drink it every day until one day I actually loved it. We used to do about 120kg/week back in 1999. So after doing about a million coffees I opened up my own cafe at NIDA. My first machine was a manual Rancilio z9 that I bought for about $1000 second hand. I think it was 13 years old when I bought it. It was a garish orange colour and looked more like a spacecraft wreck than anything else. But it made the most amazing crema and if you treated her right she would produce the most insane coffees. I opened a second cafe just out of the Sydney CBD in Broadway which went off too. We were bringing Melbourne cafe culture to Sydney. There wasn't many cafes like it at the time. After I sold those two off, I moved to Brisbane and stepped out of commercial coffee for about 10 years until I launched Coffee Beans Delivered, a  online marketplace that is designed to marry artisan roasters with the retail world. I still have a 2 group La Cimbali at home but just about to upgrade and downsize to a single group machine. My wife says she wants her laundry back (the only place a 20 amp, 2 group machine fits. I just also bought a new grinder the Fiorenzato F71EK because I was on this website and reading through the forum. I was impressed and so thoughtI'd jump on and grab one of my own. I love debating the best ways to make coffee. I enjoy the journey for the best coffee more than the actual outcome. Thanks for having me come on board.
  • Welcome to the forum fellow Brisbanian ( Is that the correct term )  We all like "the best way to make coffee debate" and welcome your contribution KK

Yeah, I think Brisbanian is pretty good. That or Brisbanite. :) I actually enjoy hearing other peoples theories about the best way to make coffee more than pushing my own. ;)
  • What about other styles and methods I am great at making Greek / Turkish coffee  :thumb: KK

I love turkish coffee, although i can't brew it myself. I've always been an espresso guy with my favourite coffee being a latte during winter and Romano during the summer.  I'm going to get a Chemex I think so that I can start getting into other brewing methods. But usually I'm too lazy and I just brew a plunger. :)

Well have a look at this thread The full method I posted is about post #28 http://www.bestcafes.com.au/forum/other-brewing-methods/greek-turkish-coffee/25/ KK
  • Welcome fellow Brisbane-mate.  Great to have another pro on board to keep us home-enthusiasts in check!
  • Thanks Brett, It's a great forum. Thanks KK, I'll read your post and start the learning process. One thing, is there a forum for learning how to better your coffee art? Because I only make a few coffees a day now as opposed to the thousands that I used to make per day, I'd say my latte art skills are a bit rusty and whilst I can still do a heart and fern, I can't seem to get any of the 30 tulips or other insane designs I see today. I used to do a swan, penquin and a dollar sign (i always gave it to snooty business men, just to make my point) But I'll have to practice them again and more often than not, I'm making a coffee to take with me on the road so latte art is a little superflous. Still, I'd love to learn how to create some of the great latte art that I see on here and all over instagram. Any directions?
  • Just start a thread and get us all involved  :thumb: May improve my own technique as I have been very lax and now only pour hearts http://www.bestcafes.com.au/forum/off-topic/show-your-heart/ KK
  • BTW its "Brisvegan" as in from Bris-vegas! Welcome aboard mate!
