After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Milk quality between states

Did coffee at an event yesterday. While very very small it was a national event.

Someone from QLD mentioned that hot chocolate and coffee was much smoother and creamier in Victoria than in QLD or NSW.
I didn't think much of it, didn't really make sense.
Victoria has different cows? Different feed? Colder weather equals greater fat production in a mammal?
I thought brand to brand would make a much bigger difference than state to state.

But a further two people said it. Strange.
It was COLD.... 4 degrees and rain at 09:00. The day topped out at 8 and little break in the rain. Maybe that?

I don't drink milk so I have no idea.
Anyone experience a difference in milk state to state?

  • It depends on what milk your using, an if you buying a big brand or local producer.  How someone buying a coffee or hot chocolate at an event can analyse state to state dairy production I don't know.  Too many variables! I buy locally produced (Cooloola or Maleny) full fat pasteurised only milk.  Buy the stuff Coles/Woolies pump out for $2 and you'll notice a difference. Why don't we get a dairy farmer and ask them?

Yes .. definitely. Pauls who supplies Woolies with their homebrand milk in Victoria has an offensive odour that is noticeable in a latte. At my Sisters, about a year and a half ago, near Tweed heads .. she had some Pauls homebrand in her fridge .. and I baulked at the idea of using it in my coffee. It was fine and had no odour at all. Not all varieties of Pauls have this smell. Their 2ltr organic homogenized in the plastic container does .. but their 1 ltr organic in the carton doesn't. They obviously get their milk from different farms for different labels of their milks. I use Pauls Farmhouse Gold .. and it is the best milk I've tried in Victoria .. and many agree on threads discussing it. I don't get anything else .. as I mainly use milk for my coffee.
  • Spot on Moon. I know only two tankers are used for Sungold milk of the entire 600 odd farmers that supply warrnambool cheese and butter. Those 3-4 farmers are the top suppliers quality wise only goes to milk production. That taste you mention is a selected taste only some can pick up - usually cows that eat cape weed!! Me, I drink WCB Jersey milk Jonty
