After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

What's your TV/Hi-FI setup?

edited April 2014 in Off-topic
When you've made that lovely  :coffee2: and sit down to enjoy it  ..  watch TV or listen to music .. what gear are you currently using?

What would you like to upgrade to? .. and what sort of space is it setup in?

*Mine is a mixed bag all purchased on eBay.

I have 4 setups - lounge, 2 in bedroom and downstairs sunroom .. that I only watch in Summer.

Lounge-room

TV - Panasonic widescreen 34'' 100 Hz Crt (2002) .. purchased in 2008.
Receiver - Denon AVR-3802 (2002) 7x110w/pc (8ohm)
DVD - Onkyo Super Audio DV SP-502
PVR - Topfield SD TF5000

Speakers - Fronts - Jensen, center - B&W, surrounds - Energy (Canada),  2 x Jensen (USA) subwoofers - 10'' and 2x 8''

The lounge-room is L shaped whereby lounge, dining & kitchen are all one space. The 10'' subwoofer is positioned to project the low bass throughout the area.

When listening to music, rather than traditional stereo .. I prefer the 5 channel stereo setting on my Denon.
I did have the 7 channels working once .. but disconnected the rear two .. as when playing music .. the sound from the rear 2 speakers, especially the bass .. did not sound right.

Bedroom

TV - Philips widescreen 100Hz 32'' 32PW8808 (2003)
Receiver - Onkyo TX SR574 - 7x80w/pc
PVR - Strong SD SRT 5392
DVD - Pioneer DV344

Speakers: fronts - Wharfedale, centre - Energy, surrounds - cheapies.

Also have a small setup for High Definition

TV - 17'' monitor .. Pioneer amp, Topfield HD PVR and Mission (Eng) bookshelf speakers.

Sunroom

TV - Philips widescreen 100Hz 32'' 32PW8808 (2003)
Receiver - Pioneer TX - SR574 5x 100w
PVR - Topfield SD TF-4000T

Speakers: fronts - Wharfedale

I love the picture quality of my Crt TVs .. although I would like to have a huge HD screen on my lounge-room wall eventually.

  • I've never felt the need for a massive tv, I feel they are often a distraction that stop people from talking and in many cases a large tv becomes the defining feature of a room. We currently just have a 27" Samsung in the living room. This is connected to a HP Microserver htpc running Plex. The plex server can then stream shows to any other computer in the house. I have thought about having a receiver and surround sound, but if truth be told out of all of the surround systems I have experienced at other peoples homes, there were only two that I would say had really good sound quality, and those people had spent serious money.  My wife complains I have the tv up too loud as it is - I don't see her agreeing to upgrade any time soon. As we only have A/C in the bedrooms at our current place (and Darwin occassionally gets a bit warm) , we have a Raspberry Pi running the Rasplex operating system hooked up to a 24" monitor with external speakers in the main bedroom. The beauty about running Plex is that the main server can handle the transcoding, so that whatever you are streaming to doesn't have to. This means the raspberry pi can now show blueray quality shows/movies without any issue. In fact, you can stream the highest definition movie to your phone should you so desire. This wasn't meant to sound like an advert I used to have a decent quality separates hifi system years ago, but these days I just don't listen to enough music to warrant it.
  • Lounge/family area (spills to kitchen as well) Receiver - Onkyo NR-579 Network Receiver TV - Soniq 55" Full HD, 3D, LED Smart TV PVR and DVD/Blu Ray - LG 500gb Twin Tuner DVB HDD with built in 3D Blu-Ray Player Speakers - Front - Linear Design, Surrounds - Bose Accoustimass 3, Subwoofer - Wharfedale Outside TV - Soniq 42" HD Plasma Speakers - Bose 251 Environmental all linked back to the Onkyo NR-579 on Zone 2 Stream audio wirelessly from my laptop to the Onkyo through my Samsung Galaxy SIII and control the AV with an app called Onky Troller Pro. • Great topic Moon. There,s not much better than a cup in hand on a comfortable chair listening intently to a good recording on a lazy Sunday. McClaren 402 pre amp, custom made silver interconnects to McClaren 702 power amp, Time and Space bi speaker cables to Bowers and Wilkins Matrix 3 loudspeakers (covers off) Marantz cd player with Accuphase interconnects. Stax SRM-1/MK2 amp to electrostatic headphones. For a touch of eccentricity, egg carton lined wall at listening end. Bass traps at live end. Very much a modest system in comparison with even  some moderate systems, but still happy with it. If i ever win lotto....

Yeah baby!!
  • Blimey .. it seems like Coffee connoisseurs around here are also into their Home Theatre and Hi Fi systems.  :coffee2:
  • Yep!  Wow look at that stuff I listed.  May have been drinking... Have updated some of it and am selling off the unused stuff.  It's crazy how quickly it loses any or most of its value.
  • I can't be bothered with all the extra gizmos to improve the audio quality anymore and 50 remotes.  It's the KISS method for me these days. I've just got a 60" LG Smart TV, Samsung wireless surround sound (hate wires).  Most importantly I have it all hard wired with Cat5e cable, unraid media server with all my music, DVDs, TV show digitally in mkv and mp4 format, running on a HP N40L.  I use the Plex server and PlayzTV (Plex client) on the LG, iPads all have Plex too. My kitchen TV is a 1st Gen LCD without any Smart function, so it has a WD live player, and uses the Plex DLNA.  Works ok, but not perfect.  There's no eye candy! :) I love the unraid box.  It took a bit to get it set up the way I want, but I learnt a lot about linux and now it's set and forget.
  • Really sound like the KISS principle Lacehim, NOT !
  • What I mean is I have one remote, that's KISS to me.  Half the time I can't be bothered even turning on the amp.  I used to have a projector, surround sound system but with 3+ remotes it was getting on my nerves. The system I have now might not look KISS to you, but it just works in the back ground and it needs very little maintenance or attention.  My movies/tv shows are protected by a parity drive so I can lose one without a worry.  The set up took time to get setup initially but now I just enjoy my media (I had to manually rip all my DVDs).  I don't have to look for DVDs or CDs now, I just open the app on the TV, and pick my show or movie, and it even tells me what the episode is about, and has DVD art displayed :)  My favorite bit it no adverts! I used to have foxtel but it was a rip off, and full of adverts and reality TV.  I can't stand reality TV, I like my Sci-fi so I can forget about all the idiots out there in the world seeking there 15 minutes of fame thanks very much. :)
  • Fair enough. I'd like to get all our dvd's onto a server but that means ripping them all. Really, I have so little time for anything these days that it aint gunna happen. I'm fine with it though. Means I'm not sitting on my arse watching movies  :D  I had to order a new spindle drive motor for the xbox ( we use it as a dvd player). Can't believe how hard they are to get in Australia. Ended up getting one from the US for $13 delivered.

I have one remote, and one keyboard. I turn the TV on with the button on the side, like an old person would, and then just use the amp for volume, and have a PC runs windows media centre that does everything including TV recording etc. Simplicity at its finest.
  • My entire HT setup is run from the iPad.  The ultimate universal remote.
  • My TV/Hi-Fi setup is centered around a smart TV connected to a soundbar and a compact speaker system for better audio clarity during movies and live sports. For streaming, I occasionally test different apps and platforms to compare content quality and performance. One option that has worked well on Android TV devices is tele latino Apk, especially for users looking for a broader range of entertainment sources. Audio quality and network stability make a noticeable difference in the overall experience, and anyone interested in setup tips, installation details, or feature comparisons can see the full guide before deciding whether it fits their viewing preferences.
