Videos Sunbeam EM7000; unboxing, first pour, foam

edited January 1970 in Espresso Machines
Hi there. My first post here hope its useful for some.
Videos EM7000
1..Unboxing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt65mEtEns0
2..First successful pour (pour #4) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLPFR1DRHuA
3..First try at EM7000 milk frothing. Could do for improvement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCBXl8oTFxA

Summary - End product tastes heaps better than coffee made with my trusty Delonghi.
Its working well with the EM440 grinder unshimmed. Thank goodness; wife would not be happy me spending more on a better grinder.

I've used about 10-15 different makes of espresso machine (used to sell used machines); none made coffee of this standard; highly recommended. Others had told me not to get a better machine; get a better grinder. Am glad I made this decision instead, however, if your grinder is below EM440 I would not bother.

  • Hi mate and welcome.  Nice video.  Your group seal seems to have a leak. Apart from that these look to be a reasonable economical option.  Very nice!

No leak; backpressure on a new seal as I expected a couple of pours later the seal bedded in nicely and no leaks.
  • EM7000 heat output is quite slow in rising to working value compared to my previous machine.  EG ready lights come on, but machine takes another 10 minutes to start cooking with gas. This would be due to the mass of the group head holder and filter. Good practice is to do a dummy pour through the group filter, before first shot. The hot water faucet output temperature was too low, and I think group may be a little low so Ive adjusted the preset temperatures one setting higher (see instructions Espresso Thermoblock Temperature/moved to 2 cups). There are various arguments about perceived versus real temperatures, but the bottom line here was it was a tad low to brew a tea bag.

Hi there, glad you are happy with your purchase. Just noting the quoted passage. a) Depends on the type and age, not to mention the individual condition of the "used machines"...Some people think they will get great coffee from worn out used commercial (cafe) machines, just because they are ...a) "commercial" and b) "large or full size"...but that is not so. When machines are removed from the commercial situation, it is sually because they have done their time and are worn out for want of a better term. There are lots of coffee burners and coffee destroyers out there, not to memntion that a lot depends on the skill/knowledge base of the operator in being able to deal with that  ;)   b) there are lots of people reading and regurgitating stuff from the www such as "get a better grinder rather than a better machine", but the comment really is a gross generalisation requiring a bunch of caveats for any given situation. For example, throwing an expensive (usually cafe type) grinder onto the bench next to a used, unknown condition thermoblock domestic appliance really isn't going to do anything of significance.... The machine needs to be of a certain "standard" first... Just to confuse the issue, while a certain level of basic grinder will do the job well enough when mated with whatever individual machine and model in terms of end cup quality, there is the overall "operator satisfaction factor" where a "better grinder" is delivering a better overall standard of operation/use and management feel, while an individual may not be able to discern a significant difference in the cup.  . There is more to a grinder than the ability to deliver a consistent grind, and so much is dependent on the individual owner, his ability to manage the equipment, not to mention his palate. We are not all created equal ! As a point of interest, what are the department stores charging for your Sunbeam?
  • Welcome to the forum! Nice job on the videos, I'm sure it'll be helpful to members looking to purchase similar machine. I've had an EM6910 for a short while. It seemed to brew cooler and bloody noisy (main reason it was 'for a short while'). :P I did adjust the temp, let it warm up for more than 15 min and flushes water through, seems the EM7000 might perform similarly. But they seem to be good value and easy to use if you don't mind the noise. About the comment 'greatest espresso machine', I have huge reservation about that.  :P But the upgrade path is very far and is probably endless, if you're inclined to achieve that 'greatest' status....Have you used Italian machines like Gaggia or Rancilio Silvia btw?
  • Great posts guys!  Spot on FC.  The RRP on these is $999 but they're at Appliancesonline for $718 currently.

Who said 'greatest espresso machine' ?? If I did somewhere its misleading. What I should have said it was excellent value for money, and what I didnt say was on Coffeesnobs others are comparing it to high end machines and claim it can perform similarly. Regards, Al.
  • Thanks for replies folks. Further comments: my EM7000 is very quiet. Price I paid here in NZ was $NZ550 (about $AU500) on a pre-stocktake sale. I understand that they have been as low as $AU400 in Australia. Another Kiwi got one for less than $500 with cashback and other benefits. It pays to shop around, but also if there is a good deal to ensure they are not returns or repairs, as some shops will recycle as new without telling you.

As is in 'there is more to a wife than buying another grinder would justify'

Now that you put it in context, it makes sense and sounds more like a sarcasm, in reference to the CS comparison. The 'greatest' comment was in the youtube's description. :P But yeah, at AU$400-500, it's an excellent value for money. Glad you enjoy the machine!
  • Great videos Big Al and for the price you scored your equipment it's a win. Welcome to the forum! [emoji3]

As is 'would she rather have you another wife or another grinder!"  ;D *jokingly of course*  :P

She is very tolerant; currently we have 3 coffee machines in this house - 2 Delonghi and the Sunbeam. Im selling the Delonghis but before the Icona gets sold, will let my daughter learn how to use before graduating to a decent machine. Icona's a challenge with single boiler. The steamer I take its silly cover off so its just the nozzle which then can make reasonable foam.
  • Daughter in 2 days making quite satisfactory coffee with the Icona. Its interesting the grind for Icona has to be about 10 clicks up (EM440) compared to the Sunbeam EM7000 otherwise it would choke. As an aside, Ive noticed the HWC side of the Sunbeam outputs slightly tainted flavour water, so that green tea does not taste as nice. This may be the boiler has residue impurities, or the internal filter Im not sure. I'd expect/hope it to disperse after a few weeks of use.
