Cardamon in espresso.

edited January 1970 in Have your say
Brewed some Turkish with cardamon the other day, nice for a change.

Yesterday whilst preparing for the PM Lungo I spotted the packet of cardamon pods, thought to self, why not, so dropped a couple into the Mazzer with the beans ???

The earth didn't exactly move, however, it certainly made a pleasant change, give it a try. :thumb:

  • Pretty normal round here but usually with some El cheapo Brazillian bean.  It's quite drinkable but have to say I prefer my coffee without it.
  • And here was I thinking I may have started a new trend. ;D
  • I reckon Star Anise might also be worth a go.  It'd live up a nightly decaf that's for sure.

    Certainly worth a try.
  • I agree it can be an interesting diversion once in a while, but I would note that once you put the cardamon into the grinder it is difficult to get that character out of everything else that goes through the grinder for a little while... I would look for another way...
  • Wish I had of read this earlier.... I tried this this morning and it was lovely!  I only used one cardamom pod in my 18g double ground ahead of the beans in the hopper.  Several coffees for guests followed and I can't taste any residual in my latest brew but maybe it's awaiting me in the dim recesses of the grind chute.  One pod is pretty subtle but it was with an Indian SO paired very nicely.  Not far off calling it Chai only no tea.
  • My choice is to pull the shot of espresso, add a dash of pure cream, a small pinch of nutmeg and a larger pinch of cardamon on top.  :coffee2:
  • Dont mind it in my turkish coffee not a big fan with espresso though, but I reckon it could go gang busters with a sumatra cild filter coffee !
  • Crikey ... Cardamon and Star of anise  :o My Grandmother used to ask my Mother when she made her a cup of tea and she wanted a 'weak' one ... 'What is it that you don't like about the taste of tea?' Cardamon and Anise are extremely potent flavours ... so .. what is it about the flavour of coffee that needs to be masked? Channelling my dearly departed Grandma  Personally .. I prefer the taste of the roasted coffee bean... even if I do dilute it with milk  8) Adding other flavours/spices to it is blasphemy imho .. I'd rather be served up a cup of Nescafe ... and we all know how that would go down (and back up) >:D

To be fair Moon, no one here has said they've tried/used Star Anise, just a "suggestive thought" by Brett at this stage. :P  :P Star Anise is way more potent than Cardamon IMOH and although I do use a small amount in brewing a Chai, I wouldn't use it in my espresso. But hey, how can one justify commenting without tasting the experimentation? As I said above, for me it's just a small sprinkle of ground cardamon with even a smaller pinch of Nutmeg over a dash of fresh cream. Yum! Neither as such, does any one (SO) roasted bean give out identical flavours to another. Diluting with milk or over ice cream, (adding sugar) is still changing the "taste" of the roasted bean. I think you'd have to be an espresso or (as in DB's case) a Turkish drinker to enjoy this added flavour without losing the 'roasted bean' taste. I wouldn't put cardamon or any other syrup/flavouring in a milk coffee for the same reason as yours because IMO the milk does enough in it's self.  :coffee2: I'm sure if you had one made for you, you'd be feeling over the moon with the result! Sorry about that pun mate. Just couldn't let it pass.  :D
  • I enjoy espresso and Turkish with a splash of Mastika (a spirit flavoured with mastic). There is something about mastic that does it for me in coffee. Or maybe it's the alcohol. [emoji13]
  • That's it!  Star Anise here I come!  You'll drink this spicy words Mooney if it's awesome ;)

Love chai when brewed properly .. esp at a Hippy festival in an Urn. Bought a packet of Star Anise from my Indian Spices shop - needed half a leg .. and there was at least 20 in there. 50 years supply .. I'll have to include it in my will .. and then suggest they do the same.

Yep .. agree .. shouldn't bag something if not tried. Jamie Oliver on TV served up a Bulls schlong & knackers for dinner to his guests. They enjoyed it. Is it ok to slam that one ... and pass?  :thumb:

If you love it ... rest assured, I'll be happy for you ... lol  ??? ps. Still roasting up those 5kg of greens I got ages ago .. Costa Rica s/o .. and using roasted blends from mycuppa and the St Ali 'Sensory Lab' beans that my local Cafe supplies - when I'm up for a change.
