After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Coffee Awards

edited March 2015 in Cosmorex Coffee
Thought I'd put up a piccie of the new cartons that just arrived.

I thought the listing of awards on the top of the cartons was a nice touch (only those for 2014 or they wouldn't fit on....)  ;D

The management, roasting and blend development  teams are going very well, and I am getting a well earned rest !

  • Congrats on a great year Atilo and from what I read you are going to continue the good work through 2015.  Must be good to know you have a great team supporting your product and even better that its allowing you a little more freedom. Chester
  • :thumb: Great stuff!  Looks very classy with all the awards printed on the top of the box.  Even better that your legacy is providing some well deserved down-time as well as providing for your kids; and, continuing to offer a much appreciated product and service!
  • The preliminary news overnight from my people for the 2015 Golden Bean Competition, equals for us: 1 x Gold Medal, 3 x Silver Medals, 9 x Bronze Medals. More, when confirmed news comes to hand. Congrats to the team @ CosmoreX Coffee / Bean Roasters for another great effort.

    Brilliant results and well-deserved!
  • Thanks guys, appreciate that. Here it is in detail: 1 x Gold Medal ie Class Champion, in Organic Espresso 5 x Silver Medals in the following Classes: 1 in Milk Decaffeinated 1 in Single Origin Espresso 1 in Espro Filter (Pressed) 2 in Milk Based 9 x Bronze Medals in the following Classes: 2 in Brew Over  Filter 1 in Single Origin Espresso 2 in Espro Filter (Pressed) 2 in Milk Based 2 in Espresso The 4 medals won in the "Milk Based" class are most important, given that somewhere around or over 90% of all coffees consumed in Australian cafes, are milk based. That is, that is where all the real world cup of coffee sales are... Congratulations to all others who also won awards, we know how much hard work goes into that, and well done to all who entered.
  • Congratulations Atillio on your multiple awards. Am sure there will be many more to come and you will need to frame em n stick them on ceilings when your run out of wall space. [emoji3] Yours truly won silver in the espresso  and bronze in milk based from the home roaster category. The KKTO and Coretto did the job.[emoji106]
  • Gary, that is huge!  From humble beginnings great things grow.  You deserve every success... you work hard as well as smart!!
  • Thank you for the kind words, and well done to you too Gary.

    Fantastic news Attilio - congratulations!
  • Indeed credit goes to the hard work at team Cosmorex. It takes more than one or two individuals to make it happen and its the people and relatives behind the scenes to make it possible. My silver espresso was the Yirgacheffe Koke unwashed supplied by team Beangreen roasted to city to city+ on the coretto in the uncovered format. Thanks guys for a great bean. I,m drinking the Yirg Kochere washed at the moment and it goes down nicely. Congrats to fellow member Lemoo who got silver in milk and bronze in espresso at home roaster cat.
  • Yes, just to give some background information for those that may not understand, there is a great deal of work and cost (understatement) going in to developing new roasts and blends, much of which ends up in production and some of which ends up in competitions. For example in the last couple of years many of our own older regular blends have been modified or replaced with the latest developments that have come through our in house development and quality control system. Unlike many other similar sized roasteries, we have a regularly used (double barrelled) professional sample roasting machine and a development and quality control team that design and test all our coffees. A number of our staff cup the results even if they are not in jobs directly related to the roasting part of the business. For example, amongst others our head storeman is on the team and has an excellent grasp of all that goes into development of the product, and has an excellent cupping palate. Everything we roast is checked, colour coded, cupped and logged (be aware that many roasteries do not do this). The larger volume coffees that are delivered to our cafe clients go through the very same process. And of course all the above builds a great culture in the staff, who are focussed and excited about the quality of the roasted coffee they work with every day. Its costly to implement this kind of thing in a small to medium sized business, but works for us. Cafe clients as well as the coffee drinking public, have never had it so good in this market in terms of the high and repeatable quality of roasted beans being purveyed by the better coffee roasteries. And of course, a HUGE thank you to the two M's who are the main driving forces in our coffee development & quality team  :)
  • The mottley crew who are our coffee development and quality control team, kind of sandwiched in between control box of Brambati roaster, 5 kg Toper in the back ground, and sundry bean storage drums. QA area is behind the camera, perhaps the subject of another photo soon. Well done people  :thumb:
  • This is where it all happens... Happy for the area to look somewhat untidy, rather than to look like a very tidy sterile & unused area.  The place gets a real workover....and so it should. The sample roaster is a clone of the probat type, next to it you can see the cyclone which in addition to catching the chaff, helps to pull air through during roasting.  Its vented to outside via the flexi pipe that can be seen. Next to the BFC dual boiler PID espresso machine (yes the PID does get used for its intended purpose) is a Ditting KR 804 grinder. Directly behind that grinder is another KR 804, on an empty bench area where the cupping takes place. If more room is needed, there are drums like the ones you can see, on wheeled platforms. Cuppings can be set up on the drums and you can walk around them cupping. Its small business, and works for us.
  • Preliminary news out for Sydney Fine Food 2016 I am reliably informed we have won 4 x Silver medals and 10 x Bronze. ...a "Fine" start to the year  :)
