Adelaide's Best Coffee Houses

  • Hi Db - I think Pat's got a point, but to be honest, the other thing is that they're a roastery so you'd think as a matter of course they'd also have some expertise at the coffee-making side of things... therefore it's a pretty difficult one to raise...
  • Ahh but a good coffee roaster doesn't make a good barista (necessarily) as they are completely different skills. I have heard from a roaster (not one I care to mention) that "anyone can make a good coffee it is all down to the roast". Not that I am suggesting that this is the case here but sometimes when you are trying to do several things you drop the ball on one.
  • OK we've closed off on our Spring issue, and the sad news is we've decided not to do the Best cafes of Adelaide at this stage. We've spent several months doing some pretty thorough research on all the places mentioned here [and a lot more besides]. There are some very good places and in fact we believe there are two or three which would fit the high standards that we need to do a Top5 on par with Sydney & Melbourne, but we just couldn't find enough exceptional places to do a Top5 to the standard we require. Things are definitely improving in Adelaide however, and we're hopeful we can do Top 5 for Adelaide this time next year. A

Morning Admin, here's a link to a timely article http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/coffee-too-hot-to-handle/story-e6frea83-1225936833587 Interesting reading through some of the ill informed comments. ::)
  • I find myself captivated reading forum. Never thought I'd enjoy it so much. Am a passionate coffee lover like all of you. Most of my drinking experience has been in sydney, drunk coffee at top 5. First time in Adelaide a month ago, and excited to try places that have been recommended. Funny though, reading through Adelaide experiences found people saying things about rio when Tony has been roasting for them. What's the story their?
  • We all know that coffee shouldn't be too hot, but judging from our [reviewing] experience over the past few months, that's the least of their worries. The big one is just the lack of quality, overall!
  • Are you reviewing strickly cafes?
  • or was that sticky cafes? dR :D
  • Mario's Restaurant. At the Glynde, opposite the Glynde hotel. It's been there forever. Went there last night as a family group. Good food (Italian of course) Excellent service. Reasonable prices. Kid friendly. Most important of course the coffee, I ordered a double ristretto at the end of the evening and found it very much to my taste, a friend from Melbourne ordered the same and found it a little bitter though quite acceptable (keep in mind this is an Italian area) SWMBO ordered a cappuccino, said she enjoyed it but still preferred my home efforts from the Bezzera, perhaps she was playing the diplomat ;D Had a chat to the owner, complimented him on his coffee, and talked about things espresso for a few minutes, very pleasant guy, as we were walking out the door he handed me a 250 gram tin of the blend they use, more about that in another post. All in all a very successful evening. ;)
  • Just spent a couple of days in the Southern Vales area of SA, one of the highlights was an evening meal at the Victory Hotel http://www.victoryhotel.com.au/index.html about an hour south of Adelaide. Must admit I was a little apprehensive when one of the people at D'arenberg wines suggested a hotel, how wrong you can be, the food was well above average, service excellent, comprehensive wine cellar and the coffee was well above the standard served at most coffee bars, well worth a visit. ;)
  • D'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz is one of my favourite wines of all time!  In a previous incarnation as a Sommelier I used to drink truck loads of the stuff!
  • hi guys - just getting back to SA got me thinking about what it is that makes the level of coffee in Adelaide so much lower than in any of the other major cities - started me thinking if it might be to do with the predominance of chains in SA. It's pretty amazing - Bean Bar, Uno Caffe, 'Funk' [yes, really] and of course the ubiquitous Cibo - wondered if that might have something to do with it... A

Has anyone told the owner (Simply Coffee) that they have a problem.
Its seems they take priority on the beans they roast/sell, and well, as for the coffee they make - thats secondary. I gotta say its a pretty stupid business decision. I have had coffee there last year and this was before I knew of anything of simply coffee (I aint been long in Adel) besides the roasting they do - my coffee wasnt nice and i remember saying to my other half we wont be back. (and i havent)

Welcome along :) Adelaide has come a long way from closing down at 12 on a Saturday but still a long way to go. The coffee scene these days at least has a few good people getting in and making some noise and putting up some better coffees than it used to have a couple of years ago. At least for you guys you can jump a plane and be in Melbourne quicker than I can if you need a good coffee fix   >:D
Steady on Tim, Adelaide ain't as bad as people make it out, plenty of good places if you know your way around. As a regular visitor to Melb I can assure you I've had more than my share of crap coffee over there. Not sure why Adelaide is singled out for special treatment but I don't believe it deserves it. ;)
  • Back between 12 and about 5 years ago I used to spend a reasonable amount of time in Adelaide. Coffee was not the best brewed option available at the time so I opted for the Beer instead ;D

think I agree with Tim Drybean - apart from Ian C's BAr 9 and Fiefy's place, I can't think of anywhere decent; would like to know the places you recommend.

Evening Lars, you could do worse then the Coffee Barun, Coffee Craft on South Road is certainly worth a visit, there really are plenty to choose from. Do you live in Adelaide? :)
  • You guys have mentioned some of the places worth visiting. Coffee branch in the city also is very good, i've not been to coffee craft yet. I spose i should also add that i'm doing the rounds in Adelaide visiting 52 coffee shops over the next year and writing about it on my blog. Exciting times with week 17 just done.

Feel free to add your blog to your signature too should make for an interesting read for the other Adelaide locals and or visitors. I will pop it into the blog thread I have running too  :) I had a bit of a chat to 'A' a little while back about getting Best Cafes doing a bit more too. I see the SA section in particular is very poorly represented if you SA guys want to add some good new ones, and or reviews as you get around. http://www.bestcafes.com.au/cafes/sa I promise I won't bag SA coffee anymore  >:D Tim

I live up in the hills, but get down pretty frequently - the only one you've mentioned I haven't been to is Coffee Craft - will check it out next time I'm down. Otherwise, am pretty happy with Bar 9 and Feify's as mentioned, and yes as Adelaidecoffee said Coffee Branch worth a visit [passable coffee] otherwise I really don't rate much else.
  • Any of you South Aussies been here? http://www.whipped.com.au/ Roasting some of there own, filter and Espresso options. See I told you I would stop picking on SA  ;D

I was at this place at the start of the year, they were pretty secrective about the beans they were using when i enquired, I could only get a 'medium to dark roast' out of them. Maybe they are a bit more transparent know. They were happy though to inform me that they were roasting onsite, I had a cap there, coffee was nice, froth needed work though.
  • Seems like they will be worth going back too. A bit more info on their FB pages http://www.facebook.com/pages/Whipped-Bake-Bar-Cafe/140453546007287 The way I read their pages only doing their own SO's not sure about their blends? Do you remember if they were using the 2 group Gaggia Lever in the shop at the time?
  • I saw the coffee roaster their (they pointed it out to me), if i remember correctly it was somewhere near the front of the shop. Not sure on brands they are using though.

Big news on the Adelaide coffee scene - Russell from The Source has advised that Tony d'Angelo has recently left Rio Coffee to set up his own roasting business. Will be interesting to see how this affects Rio, as Tony has been the mainstay of their business for a number of years... A
Heard that the current roaster has left, not sure if they have more than 1. I assume this is the same roaster that replaced Tony.
  • thought I'd add my 0.02 cents worth for a view on some of the places I've been to.... Coffee Craft:  Great place to buy beans and/or a large selection of machines & coffee equipment.   You can also have a coffee to drink there or take away, and a selection of cakes etc.   Basil is a very helpful guy.  I think their focus is more on the beans and equipment, with a secondary focus on the cafe side to the business.  They also do repairs / maintenance. Coffee Barun:  Great food and good coffee.    A much larger operation now with their move down the street to larger premises.  They can often have a larger selection of roasted beans on offer.  In the old place there was a small selection of equipment available for sale.  (not sure what equip is available now in the new shop).   Their cupping sessions are great fun, and I've also had the opportunity to try a siphon or two there as well. Their burgers are fantastic. Bar 9:  Very impressed with their SO's, and the quality of what's served up.    Small funky looking rustic interior.   The organic food on offer is excellent.  A comfortable place to sit and eat / drink / relax for a while.  A couple of old levers sitting in the corner too but not being used last time I was there. Cafe Primo (Tea Tree Plaza):  typical franchise looking place you would find in a shopping centre.  Large, reasonable to good food,  average coffee.   These guys need to clean their toilets - been here several times months apart and the toilets always smell.....  :o
  • Worth checking out Fiefy's in the city too. Simply Coffee in Kent Town has a nice buzz and onsite roasting, drink preparation can vary a bit but definitely up there. I think between the ones recently mentioned a top five shouldn't be too hard.

Well, the poll has officially closed off and these were the "peoples' choice" results: 1) Madera Boutique Coffee (42.5 %)    2) Coffee Barun Sefton Park (24.8 %) 3) Bar 9, (20%) I've not heard of this Madera place, I wonder how they're ristretto's are. May have to have a squiz. BTW - more and more, better and better cafes are opening in Adelaide. The coffee standard is improving.

have to say, not sure if I agree with you on this A/c - it still surprises me that with a few exceptions Adelaide has such a poor standard of coffee, given its reputation as a supposed connoisseur [food & wine] capital of Australia
