After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

I'm new here...

  • G'Day Jeff, looks like you have a way with words, looking forward to some interesting posts. Welcome aboard. ;D
  • Welcome Jeff, great profile pic!  Welcome to the friendly forum!
  • Good to have you here Jeff. I used to live down the road from you in silicon valley, so know the area a bit. Always liked San Francisco and north into Sonoma and surrounds.
  • I may as well get in on the action :) my name is Trevor and I have been a progressive coffee tragic for about five years.............. I began my caffeinated journey on a Via Venezia and (strike me down) supermarket pre-ground, then came a Sunbeam grinder and fresh beans (a whole new world materialised), fed by info from coffee forums the upgrade bug bit and along came Silvia and Rocky, PID kit, thanks to K Rudd a Mazzer Mini and then the arrival of an Isomac Tea II, during this time I also began roasting on a popper which I sent into meltdown mode after five consecutive roasts, thus corretto I and later on MkII were pressed into action--450 roasts later and a tempting offer from Mark at Coffeeroasters Oz saw a 2kg Torrefottore arrive on my doorstep. I have involved myself on the Perth coffee scene attending cupping sessions, barista jams, assisting at state barista championships, I try and get to Melbourne once or twice a year to soak up the coffee culture and visit as many coffee hot spots as possible I worked in the newspaper production industry for 25 years and for the past 20 years have operated a lawn/garden maintenance business which I am still operating on a part-time basis (more time to roast and drink coffee!!) cheers  Trevor
  • Welcome Trevor!  That's one serious roaster for the home coffee enthusiast!  Do you do markets or sell browns to subsidize that wonderful purchase?  Welcome to the friendly forum!

Thanks Brett, I sell a few beans to friends and family to cover costs, roaster was a self present for reaching the grand old age of 60, a little indulgence and an interest for me  when I retire fully down the track :)

A thoroughly deserved and enjoyable indulgence no doubt.  And for a hobby that can generate some funds to help sustain it to boot!  Fantastic!
  • G'day. I'm Divey. I'm an old fart who has just found out that you can roast coffee at home with a popcorn popper and I'm hooked.  :) I was asked if I would like to join this forum by another member here after swapping several personal messages on another forum. We were both unimpressed after a personal message was accessed, altered and then forwarded on. Very poor form in my books. I'm a lover and not a fighter and I'm here to learn more about the finer art of roasting coffee at home. Pretty simple stuff eh!!
  • Welcome Divey, you'll find this a pretty open place. Nice to have you aboard.
  • Yeah, I'm keen, but, somehow I did not start off too flash. I'm in the corner at the moment copping body blows. I'll stick in there and see what transpires.

Yeah mate, came in with a bit of a crash landing. I'm in recovery mode at the moment. We'll have a look around and see what is happening.

Sorry KK it ain't me, I've been a Northern Beaches person for the last forty years.
  • Good to have you here Divey, nice to see you aren't shy about posting.
  • Welcome Divey, We don't get the traffic through here that the other place gets but I guarantee that the posts are more considered, insightful and interesting.  Thank you for posting the JBM link as I was unaware that they existed.  It is a credit to the guys who keep this site running that your post was considered, allowed and not modified.  Quite rare for Aussie coffee forums in my own experience.  I too had PM's tampered with on the other site!!! Welcome to Crema mate... get amongst it!

A rather glib statement don't you think? How could you possibly guarantee that?

A rather glib statement don't you think? How could you possibly guarantee that?
Yes it is isn't it... I can guarantee it because I can sight a reference off the interweb... mine  It is merely my subjective opinion gained by reading most if not all of the recent posts, and having also read thousands of posts on other forums going back to our alt.coffee days.  I enjoy the fact that many of the newbie questions and ideas on this forum are out of my depth; posted, by people with more experience than me.  We seem to get far fewer of the 'my $50 expresso machine won't make a nice cupofchino with this premium grade antique preground coffee... why?'  We also seem to have very few posts that are answered with 'google is ya friend!'  The membership retention/contribution rate of such posts and interactions seems to me sadly small... how many CS members have had their enquiries answered and are never heard from again?  There is possibly an MPhil or Phd for someone interested in Group Dynamics and Web2.0 data collection... but it's not me! CS like Crema seems to have a core of passionate people who contribute regularly.  At Crema I look forward to these peoples posts.  I didn't experience this to the same degree previously.  Subjective... sure but like all opinions easily enough qualified and time permitting quantified.  But why bother... time for a coffee. Welcome Divey... I'm enjoying your posts on other threads very much... as I do yours Hiphipharrar.
  • btw welcome. :) (Just doing my part in those 150 posts)
  • on 1320027759:
I think Divey will be able to make his own call on that... And still retain his privacy. I for one must thank the many sponsors and their ongoing posts, as that alone is worth coming to read.. Divey, so when is your KKTOR upgrade being planned  ;)
Give me a break, I've been roasting for less than a month and you want me to upgrade to a WHAT
  • Hi Everyone I'm a specialty coffee roaster based in North Fitzroy (inner Melbourne, VIC). My business started off just over 10 years ago specialising in Australian grown coffee from my family property in Rosebank, northern NSW (Byron Bay) hinterland. Since this time we have diversified to roast specialty coffees from all over the world, however we still have a specific interest in Australian grown coffee and coffee from the region. I have been roasting coffee for 7 years and have been a barista for 10 years. I love coffee and the complexities of flavour and characteristics of this wonderful product. Due to my background involvement in growing coffee, I have a specific interest in coffee growing and processing. I have experienced a wide range of processing styles first hand through my travels in Australia and throughout Indonesia and Africa. I understand the difficulties that the grower faces to produce top quality coffee - so I also have a real appreciation of coffee too. I am lucky to have a beautiful wife and 2 kids which are my focus. I also value my friends, extended family, staff and the wider community. I love sport and nature and anything that involves activity outside. If I'm inside I'm normally roasting or serving coffee. Cheers and I look forward to being part of the Crema forum when I can Mark www.eurekacoffee.com.au www.growersespresso.com.au
  • Hi Mark and welcome, I think you're following me on twitter so I won't introduce myself :P, but welcome to the Crema forums. Nice to see your focus is on people first, and stuff second - it's great for the forum to have another experienced cupper/roaster around to swap ideas with. Whereabouts in Africa have you travelled? best, CH. Divey - welcome! totally agree with others that your post sounded like an informercial (possibly because there are plenty of places to get authentic JBM in Australia, including some of the forum sponsors, and many feel that this mellow (yet expressive) coffee isn't up there with the cream of the specialty coffee industry, but is more like a creamy, less characterful mexican coffee. I'm happy you're enjoying your JBM, even if I don't have a thing for it - it means you're not pushing up the price of Hawaii Kona  :coffee2:. Hopefully you'll hang around - all your subsequent posts have made it very clear you're an insightful human instead of a spam bot.
  • Hi eureka/mark and welcome to the chatty forum. Join us in the chat box if you have time, we'd love to have you contribute to the many  discussions
  • Hi Crema team - great to be on-board. What can I say - I'm married with a lovely coffee loving wife and two teenage girls, we have always been into good coffee, and like most of my hobbbies - I can become a little obsessive. Other hobbies past & present include motorcycles, cycling, diving, audio, DIY & electronics to name a few. I live for weekends when I can wake up and think about making the first coffees of the day. I recently got roped into a barista comp and ended up in the finals where I managed to DNF with a choked second shot. We have had very modest thermoblock espresso machines for the last 15 years or so, about 6 in total, with the last one being a trusty (we look after them so they last) sunbeam 6910. I have since the beginning modded filter baskets on our earlier machines with a dremel to turn them into single walled so I could learn to grind dose & tamp correctly, so no stranger to the core concepts. I decided to get the E61 based HX machine I had always lusted after after my finals experience, however I got totally sidetracked by the Breville DB, with the inner geek in me thinking this looked a very interesting locally developed category killer. Early impressions are pretty favourable so things are looking good, the machine is a total joy to use. Undoubtedly I will try again to win a Giotto next year, but in the meantime the BES900 is ticking all the right boxes, just got to get the consistency of shots going. Thats enough about me - I look forward to learning some more from the collective knowledge that abounds in these forums, and pray that I don't get hooked in the uber excessiveness that I found lurking in hifi land. I'm sure that coffee addicts are more level headed than audio nuts, but I'm not too sure.
  • Cool!  Welcome Epic76!  Pilot based in HK?  How's my memory?  Enjoyed you posts very much on CS and look forward to your posts.
  • Hello everyone and to friends from the past, hello again! AM has recently pointed me in your direction and I'm thankful for it.  It seems I wasn't the only one to become disenchanted with the direction 'the other site' was taking.  Anyway, back on topic and to the intro.... I'm Casey (the boy one, not the girl one) and an Aussie who lives in Hong Kong.  I fly an Airbus A330 up here having taken the usual career path pilots take - a lot of horrible jobs till you get to the one you really want.  Growing up I was an expat brat as my father was in mining, having lived in Singapore, South Korea and Hong Kong amongst others so my return here 7 years ago was a homecoming of sorts. My interests outside of coffee are gliding (had to replace the motorbike with something), fine food (both cooking & consumption of) and wine, scuba diving, golf and travelling. A Speedster has sat on my kitchen counter and I'm just as impressed with her as the day she arrived.  A Macap M4 stepless is the other half of the duo.  Like most coffee tragics I have an Aeropress, Clever Coffee Dripper, Syphon, MyPressi and most other toys that come along and they are used for travel, self-education and novelty.  I'm currently working on permission to carry the gas bottles for the MyPressi on board to ensure quality coffee during my overnight trips away.  Here's hoping!  Finally, I roast on a laptop/DMM'd Hottop P that I've found a way to make more manual and stretch a gradual rise in post-first crack temperature.  If friends requests for more beans are a suitable yardstick then I think I'm doing ok ;) I look forward to getting to know or reacquainting myself with you all but until then, best wishes. Brgds, Epic76
  • A very heartfelt welcome to Crema Forum Epic Good to have you on board KK

Hi Epic/Casey, Wecome to the friendly forum.  It's great to have you here.  An Airbus pilot is pretty impressive... but a Speedster on the bench... ... OMG that's huge!  What's even better is the fact that it seems that you aren't just hung up on the bling with keen interest in roasting and manual brew methods.  I look forward to reading your posts!!! Welcome!
  • Hey Epic76, Welcome and great to see you here... Really cool place, usual topics but more laid back. Rider (aka 'cksyd' from over there) enjoy...
  • Thanks very much; roger that!
