Adelaide water has developed a poor reputation over the years, and deservedly so, I recall when I was a kid the water was not all that brilliant. However, in its defence, during the 50's, 60's and 70's the Adelaide Engineering and Water Supply Dept were  installing and changing most of the water supply infrastructure, the result was of course lots of sediment disturbance in the system, which of course showed in what came through our taps. Nowadays its a different story, the quality of our water is very generally very good. During the past 16 years I have owned a Silvia and now a Bezzera Domus Galatea, both have been fed on unfiltered South Australian water with no problem whatsoever. I Do back flush and descale regularly. Not suggesting others don't use filtered water, if you feel happier installing a filter don't let me dissuade you, I have not found it necessary. Yes I drink water from the tap and cant detect any taste, perhaps I'm used to it, or maybe I've simply got a crap palate. ;D

I just bought a filtering jug and it filters for the scale, fingers crossed it goes some way to helping. The SA tap water tastes fine to me too DB, I regularly drink multiple glasses a day of it  ;D.

Hi sue. Those will help but from what I have seen you might have to relate the cartridges every couple weeks subject to how many litres you want to soften. I've read somewhere that Brita jug filters are only good to soften 4 litres of water. Can't remember where I read this. I could be wrong. Let us know how you go. It's probably worth testing the input tap water and the resultant softened filtered water to determine when those cartridges need replacing.

According to the book that came with the jug they filter 150 litres before needing a change. I fully intend to get a test kit in a couple of weeks to test ingoing and outgoing water, just to keep an eye on things. The jug I bought uses the "Maxtra" cartridges.

I regularly test the hardness of our water, it varies between 100 and 150 PPM.
