After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

    ...wrong thread :D
But this is exactly what this tread needs... Only with the major competitor's machine instead. Oh well... I have holidays in a couple of weeks. Perhaps I can talk AM into revisiting Coffee Guy wit a video and 50 500w Fresnels for almost adequate lighting.
  • Well if someone can supply me with a BDB I'll do a complete blog just on that as well  ;D I always knew what I was planning on doing would be a huge benefit to everyone *shrugs*
  • Okay I've decided to do a detailed ongoing home-user review on my tumblr account. So now we will have two resident reviewers for two great home machines ;) I'll post review updates on here too and link back when I can...
  • Yah, have linked yours to mine so people can get the best of both worlds in making their decisions  :D

Great stuff you guys! I liked AM's suggestion also but after his quip about me needing the training I was going to void his 'smart' grinder warranty by installing a few useful mods (read bonus confusion features)!  All in all possibly an unproductive venture once I exact my revenge!  ;D
  • Here's an interesting link http://www.solis-onlineshop.ch/product_info.php?info=p460_Barista-Pro.html&XTCsid=15201dcaf79fd1e49a49f9e903a215b2 does the Solis machine remind anyone of another recently released offering? My German is not real flash though it looks like this version is a thermo block machine.  ;)
  • They are a bit behind the times, wonder how long until they actually get the new one. Barista Pro The new programmable semi-automatic machine with integrated grinder conjures up the perfect cup of coffee for the whole family. Classic elegance and beauty, essential stability and sophisticated, innovative technology features of this machine. Integrated conical grinder with grind adjustment 18stufiger Programmable cup size Pressure Gauges Thermo-block heating system Professional Pump Espresso Pre-brew Energy Saving Superheated steam 2 liter water tank
  • Auto-start and front-filling of the tank are two features I have quickly grown to love with the BDB. I really wish it had the capacity for two auto-start times. I wake up and am ready to go but when I get home, If I have forgotten to change the auto-start time I have to wait... :(

Solis are actually Swiss  :) Interesting to see if it is a re badge distribution deal for all or part of Europe or a totally independant design. The more recent Solis range was in need of a makeover in spite of making a good brew. I used to have a Solis SL90 which did the job nicely.
  • I saw the new machine on display at the GoodGuys on Saturday - looks nice. How long do we wait till those who bought it begin to give their feedback? I'd be interested to know, my mission on Saturday was to buy a new iron for my wife - the last thing she said to me before I left was " my friend Sue says dont buy a Breville!!!" ?

What does Sue know that others dont & what model was she referring to ?? KK
  • I think the main thing is that there will always be someone who hates a brand based on ONE experience with it that they don't like. I have several applicances of all kinds of brands I'm happy and unhappy with. I try not to let that sway me unless I've seen a bit of consistency (for example, I'm very unhappy with both my Sunbeam food processor, and Cafe series mixer. I am however happy with my Sunbeam blender and toaster. I'm also happy with my Breville microwave and sandwich press. I think, in general, appliances don't fail that often, so *most* people just recommend what they have unless they're piles of excrement. As a result of this, if people own ten appliances of one brand, and one of those is horrible, they'll tell everyone they know not to buy that brand for any appliance type. One of the downsides (for them) of those companies making a bit of everything.

We have seen smart grinders go for $155 so if my sums are right,  the BDB will go close to the 1k once stocks are plentiful for those interested. Don't get me wrong, it's still a lot of money but at that price it's a good machine if it proves to be reliable. For as near as matters to 150, the smart is a good little grinder also.  Sunbeam, Breville, Delongi, Krups.... None of these brands really trade on their names for prestige surely.  They trade on being affordable, attainable and fit for purpose.  I thought that these appliances were all this and more when I had a play but I too would love some more owner feedback.  Especially as the prices fall and more and more people are convinced to take the plunge.
  • Sorry I regret the comment - but it did jolt me back to reality and got me thinking twice about throwing caution to the wind and bringing one home - not good for the marriage! Im hoping all the feedback is good (and if the price drops then fantastic) and there may just be a Xmas Present in the offing from Dad to Dad. BTW the iron I bought was the wrong one anyway - too heavy, too hard to fill, too complicated -  " why cant you just buy the same model as we had before?" My darling that model went out of production 5 years ago....cant win..

you're right, guess my bad experience with the Breville cordless kettle [a few pages back] sort of fits into that category, but still have to say it was surprisingly badly made.

Don't regret your comment Springbok... It's a fair comment: I'm sure it is one heard or overheard 1000 times a day!  Personally I'm holding off on recommending this one until it is proven to be reliable so perhaps I too am affected by brand on one level.  I have to sympathize with you on your iron. When I was sent out to get a vacuum cleaner I got a real man's vacuum with a powerhead and 2ton of suction.... thus it is now a man who is made to use it!  >:(
  • All I can say about it is They dont make them like they used to   ;D We own and still use cast alloy body fans made over 30 years ago KK

In some ways that's gotta be a good thing... for example, 30 years ago they didn't have notebooks, they had note books ;)

yes, have to say I'm surprised we haven't heard a bit more... Muscles, did you say you were now a proud owner - did you want to put together your impressions on the machine, either here or under Bf's Machine reviews thread below? A

Done - Just added to the review thread: http://www.bestcafes.com.au/forum/index.php?topic=1588.new If you want more detail than that, have a squiz at my blog. Also, i reckon we haven't heard more because the pack has been divided in to two groups: a)the "this is the best machine" group; and b)the "lets see how reliable they are" group. People from group a) don't want to hear anything bad/negative about their new machines and will recommend everyone buys them. Me personally, I am in group c) the "this is a good-value machine but let's not call it a be all and end all, and tell us what is wrong with the OPV/Pressure Gauge" group. I think Breville have done well to pack all the features in and seriously, if the OPV/Gauge issue is the only issue - then bravo! I have PM'd Phil McKnight asking what he recommend I do about it - but no response. I have used the contact us form on the support section of the Breville site and asked them what the issue is and what I should do and again - no response. Maybe this post will get them to respond but I highly doubt it.
  • that's brilliant - thanks mate

Second that! Thanks for the review Muscles. Some very salient points.

Let's try this again. I think as I'm named directly in this post I have the right to reply with the facts & not have it deleted! Marc did NOT PM me on this site. I was only made aware of his web inquiry 3 days after he lodged it & this has been raised with those responsible for CS rep response timelines. Marc can post the outcome if he so chooses. Cheers, Phil
  • Hi Phil - apologies. We had technical difficulties over the weekend and a number of posts were lost due to having to restore back to an earlier date [see post in the Crema Magazine thread - Forum tech issue over the weekend!]. We are attempting to retrieve lost posts.
  • Also lost was a terse response from Phil that threatened the future employment prospects of a CS rep.  Im sure we all hope that this is not the case.  I too would like the posts restored if possible because they are most informative.
  • Hey guys, no tampering (pun intended) of posts going on... Here's what happened that isn't in the thread (because of the rollback/data restore): Phil posted on here, I posted back, he PM'd me, I rang him and I'm off to Breville HQ in the morning!! All in all it's been a very swift response and I am looking forward to having the BDB inspected tomorrow. What's even better is that I'll be able to wait while the machine is looked at and adjusted / calibrated - pretty cool indeed... Anyway I will update you all tomorrow

Great stuff Marc!  I'm sure that you'll be looked after really well and here's hoping that it's just a simple gauge calibration issue.
  • Hey AM - nice to see you back again - hope you had a nice holiday!
  • Okay, so I met Phil at Breville HQ yesterday morning and had him adjust the OPV, no replacement parts necessary and the whole process took around 10 minutes. It would have been faster if we weren't so busy wagging our chins. I must say that Phil is a credit to Breville. We have all heard about his industry experience and passion for coffee but how many project/product managers would go out of their way by making time to do something like this right before going on an O/S trip? Not many. I was expecting to be told to take it a service centre and to leave if for inspection and that I would get a phone call call when done - so to Phil I say thanks heaps :) I remember doing the same in my store manager days, performing basic repairs on site or in store as necessary to keep the customers happy rather than booking in a call out from our techos. Now, being IT savvy and technically but not mechanically minded, meant I was too busy looking around the room at all the other cool toys rather than focusing my attention on exactly what was being done to the BDB. I can tell you that very few tools were needed/used and after 3 or 4 adjustments the calibration was complete. Bearing in mind that I have only used a few espresso machines and this is the first with an OPV I am trying to reserve my comments as to the resulting shots until I have a few under my belt post adjustment. The pours are different and as such I'll be monitoring/adjusting my dosing and distribution over the coming days.
