After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

And the two specialty stores that do have access to the first run of BDB's were quick to drop the Breville Smart Grinders at the first sniff of competition/discounting. I wonder now if they only started selling them again once they'd heard of the arrival of the BDB.
Hello graham There seems to be some misunderstanding.  We've never discontinued supply of the Smart Grinder.
  • Hey folks just a friendly reminder that this is a coffee discussion forum and not an air your personal grievances forum or a let's snip and take pot shots forum As such please keep comments on topic and take any non relevant concerns elsewhere Non sponsors are also reminded that referencing their product may be in breach of stated policy guidelines

Fair warning to all [above] Pat, but if it is the case as Cuppacoffee suggests, then he has every right to correct the record.

I agree with Pat 100%, once threads degenerate into slanging matches its a slippery slope, particularly when most of the opinions are based on guess work and here-say. Wont be long now and the Breville DB will be out there and we can get opinions based on fact. ;)
  • I wonder if by "drop" the poster meant "bundle" or "drop in".

LOL!  ;D. If I were in the market for this level of machinery I wouldn't buy anything without checking out the Lelit PID and the Vario.
I've taken the plunge and ordered a Lelit PID from Charlie and Deb.   I'm curious to see how the coffee is in comparison to my Lusso - sort of digital vs. analog.  I plan to use it at work and when we go on holidays. I was seriously thinking about getting the Breville Double Boiler but I just can't justify to the OH having another big coffee making device in the kitchen! Hopefully I can tuck the Lelit behind some other things, and I think it will be more portable than the BDB. My love will still be with my Lusso, of course.   Shape_shifter, I still reckon the Lusso might be an option for you and your OH - I know the OH just wants to press a button but really the only difference with the Lusso is that instead he would pull a lever twice instead of pushing a button.   Steaming milk, Grinding coffee, tamping and locking into the PF would all otherwise be pretty much the same. And the BDB might be quiet, but I bet the Lusso is quieter.  ;) I hope the BDB does well - I think it looks like a top machine. Sniff

Awesome Sniff!!! I can't wait to see your review and your take on the taste of the coffee as a side by side with the Lusso. You couldn't have two more different machines on your bench and I for one am sooooo jealous. My wife has given me the green light to upgrade the Splendor before the next baby so I'll be watching this space in regards to the leaver vs pump machine. Good on you!!! Now back on topic I can't help but wonder if that by utilising the modern media formats and using forums and web2.0 modus operandi to advertise their product; Breville has failed to acknowledge the

That's the thing - for less than the price of a new Splendor I've got a new Lusso and a New Lelit PID, so effectively I've got a 3 group twin boiler PID lever machine! And it's all Italian bling! ;D

Be sure to review both (especially the Lelit) when you get it).
  • clearly the whole thing has left a sour taste with E61 - see: http://www.e61.com.au/breville-bes900-dual-boiler/

And to the victors go the spoils... Enjoy your Brevilles Cuppacoffee.
  • Brett, despite what anyone thinks, I'm sorry it turned out the way it did, though thankful to be part of the introduction of this machine.  I certainly don't feel like a victor. Cheers Den
  • So, who's rushing off to Domayne at Kotara?  I hear they have the DB for $1299

I think! and read it as The comment/post by DR was to do with discount pricing Without knowing the details it can be read as one retailer is allowed to discount, & one is not ? KK
  • KK, Breville have a wholesale price, which can differ and probably does, eg. I wouldn't expect to pay the same as an entity that purchases millions of dollars worth of Breville gear per annum. Breville also have a recommended retail price.  They cannot and don't enforce this.  It is illegal to do so.  Interesting though that traditionally, you would never see Apple or Miele discounted. E61 has been quite vocal in expressing his reasons why he doesn't stock the Breville.  This gives you one side of the story.  Breville have in part replied publicly, and chosen not to discuss the matter further. Only a fool would make a judgment based on one, jaded, expression of what took place.  I'd be very surprised if you would do that. PS. I don't believe Domayne at Kotara have stock, nor that they are offering a 'special'.  More likely, if such an offer was made, it was probably from on salesperson who hadn't been meeting sales targets and no real idea of the actual wholesale price. ;)
  • Well

Well I don't do that I have read comments from both sides of the fence Both can be right and both can be wrong It all boils down with the interpretation I personally don't have or formed a view hence my lack of interest on this topic KK

What is becoming evident is that like many others; is that the marketing and support does not always live up to the Promotions and Published Performance specs.. Just read two articles in a coffee mag, any all I can do is shake my head... I am almost ashamed to see them in a Coffee mag.  Better suited to the marketing and glossy in the Sunday paper, or  the 6:30 current affairs shows.. The intent might be there, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired... Not sure what their actual ISO certification status is, but would love the chance to do a process audit and while plenty of major non conformances  are clearly evident.  It would be interesting to see how senior management respond and not the loose cannons.
Excellent points all of them!  The litigious American market will be the true test.If it goes gret guns over there perhaps we'll see a revision or verstion BDB 910 ;D
  • With very minor exceptions normally having to do with person to person digs and outright hostility this site has left discussion on the Breville DB fairly well as it stands with very very few posts removed. Most of the removed non personal ones were put straight here. Looking at problem areas on here and other forums this consumer end of the market typically leads to most posts and or threads for a multitude of reasons, you only need to look at Silvia, Sunbeam thread et al to see that. Over time an continued use the real story and reliability of the Breville will come out. I suspect that only then will the marketing hype be proved accurate or otherwise. This thread was set up separately for reasons of keeping the machine thread just that. Discussions about how companies choose to market their products are interesting but at the end of the day marketing is their decision rightly or wrongly. Open viral type marketing on a web forum could either be seen in time as brave or dubious depending on which side of the camp you sit. This is in spite of pressure private and public being brought to bear by current or ex members and even ones that have returned back to try and stir up trouble. If anyone has a problem with items they think have been unfairly treated or freedom to discuss rationally any coffee subject then best discuss it with A or one of the mods in private. As to Coffeegeek it will be interesting to see how Mark P and their members find the machine given the likely larger numbers of users.
  • I see the specialist retailers have dropped this from their product line. After all that hype!  ::)  They only lasted 5 months!  ??? What annoys me is all the agro that E61 got over it!  They would probably be competing with HN & the like by now.
  • yes, shocking. they're great machines, I guess the specialist retailers dont want to sell $1200 machines when they could sell an european $3000 and make a larger margin? maybe they should change the brand to "El Brevillo" and it'll sell better
  • on 1322130202:
The main issue is that the big chains can out sell the little guy every time and there is not much else that the little guy can offer... Plus if you look at the hype (BDB is on par or better than a GS3), then even a 3K machine is not up to the BDB performance. So I guess the small retailer will need to dump all their small stock and just go high end.  And the market is not big there either, so if machine sales is you bread and butter.  Then some might need to re-evaluate their business plan and focus.  If machine sales is the cream, then one might just have to accept a diet  ;) That is of course, if the BDB does corner the market AND it could well do  8)
In which case Breville can thank the sacrificial little guys and we will be all the poorer.  Buy as much as you can from your sponsors guys.  We want them to still be here in years to come.  Once HN corners the market then it's 1kg packs of Primo (read Crappo) roasts for everyone. On the plus side our palates will be so desensitized Maccas may legitimately win an award for satisfactory coffee.
  • They shouldn't have gotten involved in the first place, it was on the cards from the start.  I wonder if they will start selling lelits and silvias again?

Surely it would be the uber-sexy (compared to a cardboard box), "definitely not made in China" (after all the bagging of Chinese made HX machines) "Silvia Killer".  Gee - that disappeared quietly after all the hype.
  • In the US its rebadged as the Crossland CC1.  Moved on to a bigger market.
  • The Gee is still being imported by 9 Bar Espresso in Melbourne as far as I know. Just a few have stopped selling them.

Completely agree AM!  Lacheim, does this mean that the old Rocky may come back into vogue.  Unlike some of the Chinese offerings the Rocky WILL last long enough to go in and out of fashion.  I can put it in the cupboard with my thin black leather tie, pink shirt and double breasted suit safe in the knowledge that one day I will be the height of fashion grinding my beans.  La-di-dah!
  • I have just lurked here as i dont have much to add. I work for an outlet which sells Breville. We are a big retailer and receive a hefty rebate on sales. We can sell at wholesale and still make money anyway.

Welcome Caffeinated.  We have a member here who has purchased a BDB for $850.  You can't seriously tell me that that is still profitable???  Soon after, the Breville is dropped from the range of the small retailers who loaned their credibility to the product launch as well as their floor space.  Could the two incidents be linked?  Are forums truly this powerful?  Was Breville's move to infiltrate, divide and conquer a brilliantly executed stratagem? Look I'm still talking about them and not yet a bad word.  Someone shut me u

Welcome to the forum Caffeinated and thanks for the information. Slowly the pieces of the puzzle slot together. My feeling is that Breville used the resources and knowledge of the specialist coffee industry for its own selfish ends, it never had any intention of allowing the smaller coffee retailers a piece of the action, the retailers have every right to feel miffed. Never stand between a large company and a big bag of money, they will do whatever it takes to get their hands on the cash, if it means pi*sing of a few small retailers, so what. :stir
  • Really? If that is true some goose lost over $300 and probably his job too :pan
