After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Isomac Grinders

edited January 1970 in Grinders
Hi all

I have this grinder:

http://www.isomac.it/Macprofinox.htm

With my Via Vanezia (Saeco), it seems like I can't get my grind fine enough (with the setting set all the way to the finest grind setting - I think).

I try to get double ristrettos with the double basket, and apart from really packing the basket, with numerous tamps (but not more than 15kg, John  ;)), I get about 30 mls in just under 20 secs. I get tonnes of crema with small bubbles, but it dissipates relatively quickly - it isn't like the normal thick crema from an espresso shot.

Am I expecting too much from the machine? Am I being a complete goose (FC, JD & Pab - you don't need to answer that one). Does this mean I have to upgrade to a Giotto  :P?

Cheers

P

  • P Bit hard to say what the problem is without being there. However, the Diadema or Giotto is a certain easy and quick fix. Did this problem occur after a few glasses of grape juice??????? JD ;D
  • JD, I think the problem started because of a LACK of grape juice (at the time). Are you suggesting a $2000 trade-in value for the Saeco (with no adjustment to the price of the Diadema or Giotto?)  8) P
  • P :o No probs with the trade in. However, there is a mandatory pre-delivery charge of $2550. Both machines are in stock, Will forward payments details via private email. Please confirm when you wish to pick it up. ;D ;D ;D ;D
  • I have the same grinder, but I am using an ECM Botticelli. Rio Coffee (Adelaide) told me that there is a grub screw you can remove which allows you to make the adjustment finer. Be aware that this screw is in place to prevent you making the grind so fine that the burrs will touch each other). So remove the screw, but at your own risk. I suggest your Via Venezia is the problem. I had the Spidem knock-off of the VV, and eventually ditched it for the Botticelli. HUGE improvement. Maybe try only pulling 1 ristretto at a time. That's what I do.
  • Thanks David, 'Grub screw'? Mate, I am a pen-pusher. Anyhoo, I tend to agree that the VV is undoubtedly the main limiting factor here. At the end of the day, I spend most of my time trying to 'get around' the limitations. Whilst that is fun in itself, it is somewhat frustrating. Cheers
  • Alright, does anyone know, with the aforementioned grinder if: 1. I can make the adjustment 'stepless'? 2. I can make the grind finer than the stock finest setting? Cheers P
