Hey Lacehim, Congratulations on that shot! How was it? How do the shots from the Achille taste compare to the PVL? What was the big breakthrough for you to get the pour from gushers (last week) to mousetails (today)? What do you plan to do to tame the pump noise? Cheers, Paolo

Paolo, I pulled 5 shots and picked the best video (the first would you believe!) but they are coming out rather nice. Bit hard to tell if the diff between the lusso and the QM, but the espresso is much more to my liking straight up, and not as strong in a latte. Might be down to the beans though. I'm going to fire up the lusso in the next few days before I box it up and do a taste comparison. Anyone want to help? I got the dose much better, and better distribution in the basket, and I've been anal about tamp level. It's all come together. Now I need a decent tamper (Still waiting on Jack's replacement one). Regarding the pump noise, I think it's a combination of a few things. Firstly the drip tray top rattles if it's not pushed all the way back, and secondly I think the safely valve is touching the case. I'm not that worried about it, if the drip tray is pushed in properly it's not that bad, and only runs now and again. When I get time I'll be taking the case off to just have a look and while I'm there I'll take a look at the pump noise issue.

That is really great to hear! I am getting really good shots fro my Achille. I have adjusted the pressurstat to max at 1.1 Bar. I have to admit though that (so far, anyway) the crema is less and the shots are less dynamic than the ones that I can make on my Cremina.....

Nice looking shot, Michael! That pump Is certainly much louder than mine. As with mine, it comes on when the boiler needs to be filled, regardless of the lever position. Out of curiosity, why do you use the double spouted porta Filter? Looking forward to seeing more great shots.

I'm getting more out of the QM, than the lusso for sure. But shot volumes are higher on the QM. I think maybe if you play with your dose/grinder/tamp you might get a different result. Either that or roast up some MM! That will give you a crema boost! :rofl:

The only reason being that I don't have a little tamp stand like yours. I only have a tamp map. I'm hoping to get/make a tamp stand and when I do I'll be using the single spout when I can. Also I'm on the look out for a spare portafilter to convert to a nakid!

I was hoping Londinium accessories would fit given it's the same group? I also wonder whether a Londinium pf might be able to hold a larger basket? I'm a bit reluctant to get a naked PF as at the moment any channelling is hidden by the spouts! This morning's shots from the QM reminded me of the shots I used to get from my Lusso, very dense flavour - which is not surprising given less water is going through the same amount of coffee. Very nice though. Having to make two shots rather than splitting a double is a bit of a pain (but the same as what I used to do with my Lusso) but it does mean I get to pull the lever twice! The noise is ridiculous though - very much like a tractor...a bit like Lamborghini?? I think my routine will be: Pull first shot, steam milk; pull second shot and then enjoy. As long as the wife gets the first latte I should be able to keep it. Sniff

I just had that brain wave too! No nakid handles on the website yet though. Glad you are getting used to it. I'm going to track down this noise sometime soon, just to see what it's all about. That rotary pump should be quiet!

It lands exactly where the native pf lands. I feel as if I need to pull it a tad tighter, but there is no leaking if you do so. By the way, you asked about adjusting the pressure stat. There is a hole in the top of the machine (under the ss cup holder) where you can put in a long, skinny screwdriver. If you move it, don't move it more than 10 degrees at a time. Probably less. They can be VERY sensitive!

An update, I emailed Orphan espresso about their nakid handle. There reply to my question, would it fit the Bosco? "Hello, the Astoria bottomless PF is the same as what is supplied by Bosco (we have both in hand, and they are identical). Thank you for asking, Barb"

Those of you who have the Achille have noticed that it takes quite a bot of force to pull the lever down into the cocked position. I decided to try and figure out how much force it really takes. So, with my trusty digital bathroom scale, and what I remember from my statics class back in 1976 (Statics hasn't changed since then, right?) I figured I could weigh myself holding the lever right before it locks down into the pre-infusion position, and then just weigh myself. Without divulging the details, the difference between the two numbers is 34.5 pounds. That is 153.5 newtons to you (we can pretend it is mass and call it 15.65 kg) I would be curious if Michael or Paul see similar numbers.

Almost identical. The lugs on the bottomless Astoria PF are slightly thicker than the Quickmill lugs, so you need to file them down a bit to get the handle to fit the group

I suppose a little update is in order. Now that I've had the beast for a few weeks, I'm really enjoying it. My tamping really needed work, and now that I'm ultra level and have the dose sorted I'm getting some nice pours.

Plenty more to play with once I get my nakid, hopefully next week. I should post up a new video. Milk steaming is a little slower than I thought it would be, but maybe that's due to the 2 hole tip or the antiburn wands? It's controllable though, so at least it's not heating in 10secs!

There's certainly a lot more water on the purge that I was getting on the lusso. Not sure why. Jack has tweaked a few thing to reduce pump noise, so when I get time I'll take a look under the hook, take some photos and see if I can find the cause of the noise. I've been happy with the shot volumes, I actually pulled and weighed a few shots on the lusso before it went, and I was getting a 30ml shot out of a 2 pull double basket. With this machine I'm getting 40ml just about each time. I drink it like that, or slip for visitors. Most of them don't like it too strong anyway. I did try a Felini just for Kelsey and that did increase volume to 50ml, BUT the second full lever pull was blonding a lot by the end, so I wouldn't bother doing this again. It was interesting to do it though, you would need to work out at the Gym if you wanted to do it a lot! :laugh: As G said a felini is only really for smaller levers.

I received a message from Jack at Sorrentinacoffee yesterday. He asked how the shots in my Achille were progressing. They have improve amazingly since using the EP basket....in fact they are consistently excellent.........but I seem to have have reached another plateau. I have to say that the Cremina shots are still better.

I does seem strange that they are both Astoria but are different! Haven't got mine yet anyway. It's going to make a mess when I get it, my dose/tamping hasn't been too consistent of late. Going to have a good play tomorrow, and really get it nailed on the Vario with a timed dose.

You would think that baskets would be identical too. But they aren't. If you are getting one of the EP baskets too, my prediction is that you can forget about all the methodical bed preparation and levelling to the nth degree, like you have to with the Quick Mill basket. Just ordinary preparation like you would do with any other machine. Let me know if I am off base here, Lacehim. Cheers, Paolo

Chris at Talk Coffee has one of these machines on his bench courtesy of Jack. It will be interesting to see what he thinks of the machine, and if he can fix the quirks easily. He mentioned on the CS thread that it's noisier than any rotary or vibe pump he's heard, and he's not far wrong. I've just received by nakid from OE and it locks in, but only to about 8o'clock

A little tweek and hopefully it will be right. Sniff suggested slightly filing the lugs. Is that the best way? I just don't want to lop off too much! The tripple basket is in my regular group handle at the moment, much deeper which results in a bit less volume but much more favourwise in the cup.

My beans started to get a little old at just over 3 weeks and I was grinding pretty fine. I roasted far too much so it doesn't usually take me that long to get through! I pulled out a fresh bag, of a blend of Java, PNG peaberry, Brazil Sweet, and MM. Not much MM in this one, but I thought it would be a bit fresh at only 7 days. Boy was I wrong! I used the triple basket that came with my OE nakid and WOW! I got a lovely slow pour, no channeling. Just made myself a morning latte and it was beautiful! The bigger basket certainly made a difference.
