After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

I'm new here...

Hi Dry  :) Our family household has a sunbeam cafe series machine which is approx 7 years old.  Starting to use the machine now again and its playing up.  Our family is looking into buying a mobile coffee van / coffee kiosk / coffee cart.  We are now looking to buy a semi automatic commercial machine for home so we can perfect our coffee making. Dislikes - the fact that I thought I knew what I was doing years ago when using the home machine. I pity the family and friends that got served that muck.  :stir Dislikes also paying good money for bad coffee. Likes -  that I am developing my coffee knowledge and making skills.  Zarraffa's coffee drive thru's after a busy day. Naomi  :coffee2:
Morning Naomi, The Sunbeam sounds like it served its purpose, introduced you to better coffee and gave you an insight into the fact that there are better options available, obviously if your looking to start a small coffee related business there are a lot more skills needed than simply being able to make a decent coffee, buying a decent home machine and grinder is certainly a good start though. The fact that you recognise your skills need improving is certainly a good beginning. I don't think any of us like paying for below average coffee. Plenty of experience and advice available here and on similar forums. Good luck, Dry Bean. :)

Welcome mate!  It's a bit quiet around here at the moment with many of us on holidays or spending quality time with alcohol (I meant family)! Nonetheless if you get amongst it, we'll no doubt be dragged out of the woodwork!  Welome again!
  • welcome aperfectcoffee. Let us know a little about your coffee journey. Enjoy the forum and get involved and as BrettH said, quiet through the Christmas period but they will soon return. Have a safe new years Chester
  • Howdy, Wishing you all a Happy New Year! I'm guessing a lot of people will be needing their caffeine hit this morning particularly, myself included. A bit about me... I live in Brisbane. Have been involved in the hospitality industry since I was 4 years old. Yes 4 omg child slavery;) When it comes to restaurants I'm an all rounder or let's just say it's a comfortable environment for me, but I'd like to specialise and learn more about the cafe industry now as I have an opportunity to open up a hole in the wall, neighbourhood espresso bar in West Brisbane, April this year. I look forward to picking your brains :)

  • Hey guys, Chookz here. I've joined up because I can't start a day without a good coffee (or 3) and lately I've been thinking that it's what I want to pursue as a career. I live in Melbourne and work full time, but am looking to get a small roaster and start experimenting on the side. Who knows what could come of it?!? So just swung by to say hi. I guess to get the ball rolling here's some info I'm after to make a start on my journey: - What are some good roasters to start off with? How much am I looking at spending? I'm the type of person loves to have the best of everything so would rather pay a little extra to get a good machine as opposed to something cheap to start on. Pay a little extra, not go too crazy - perhaps looking for a range of machines from cheap to the cream of the crop and I can see where my budget fits. - Next up would be size. I'm thinking 1 kg as I'll be learning to roast from scratch and experimenting with different roasts. So expecting a few mistakes along the way and 1 kg would have the least wastage. So what do you guys think? Good to start at 1 kg? Or save a little more and grab a big boy? - Lastly to get the conversation going, can anyone point me to a good source of information for beginner roasters, and also if anyone knows any good sources of info for setting up a roaster/coffee shop business. I'm only very new to this site and am conscious of clogging up this introduce yourself thread with all my questions, so please point me in the right direction if any of these questions have their own threads on the forum. Thanks guys, speak soon

G'Day Chookz, Welcome to The Coffee Forum. Lots of options available for roasting, I started roasting years ago with an aluminium bowl, a wooden spoon and a heat gun, from there I progressed to a Coretto and have been roasting weekly 750 gram batches ever since. The Coretto is a simple setup, cheap to make, excellent results and will give years of service. The dog bowl works OK as well, the wrists get a little tired after a while.
  • Welcome Chookz Like to make an entrance with the big questions hey, can I point you to the roasters thread. http://coffeeforum.org.au/roasters-different-roasting-equipment/ Lots of good information on the many roasters that you can get with budgets from what's in your kitchen to $30k upwards and everything in-between. For advice on setting up cafes I would be looking at the information that mycuppa posts, amazing amount of knowledge on the industry and well worth listening too. Enjoy the forum. Chester
  • Welcome Chookz!  Get posting in the threads mate.  You'll be pleasantly surprised by the knowledge many of our members not to mention their generosity!
  • Welcome to the forum chooky I can't help you with large roasters but small ones not a problem KK
  • Hi all, Good new format - Ive been working a FIFo for the last 2 years  in the Gas fields of Roma, Injune, Miles and Chinchilla - so yes Ive been out of circulation. AM helped me by rebuilding my Hottop for which Im truly grateful - apparently I was supposed to clean it occasionally.. Since Ive been away - Ive had to invest in a Nespresso machine at home so that my wife and daughter and their friendscan at least have a coffee that they can make themselves - so my Lelit has been relegated to the garage. Anyway to remind you all - Born in Northern Rhodesia ( Zambia) many years ago - relocated to Johannesburg with my parents where I did some of my schooling and my studies and started my career as an Electrical Engineer - emigrated to Brisbane in 1999 with my family  - "Africa for the Africans" they say nowadays and they can have it... Im a happy little Vegemite here.. Miss the gatherings we have had in the past and when I get back to Brisbane full time hopefully we can meet up again - good to see a few familiar names here. All the best..

Morning Springbok, Thanks for taking the time to log in and give us an update. Lets hear more from you in the near future. :)
  • Great to see you mate.  Yes I agree I feel the need for a social too!  They were always a great idea to get together and put a face to a name and enjoy a coffee or 2. Hopefully Chester will be ready for one.  His place is amazing but a bit of a drive from Brisbane. [emoji20]
  • Hi Springbok, Great to hear you again. How do you cope with FIFO coffee??
  • Springbok got me hooked on Biltong Good to see you posting again  :thumb:
  • I am not new but been on hiatus for quite a while and a lot has changed. My head barista position pretty made me focus on rosters and ordering rather than actually making coffee which wasn't good for me at all. I'm now studying theology full time and unemployed for the moment. Still keeping my skills in check on the Bezzera at home!
  • Good to hear from you Michael, we are always heading where we are meant to be but sometimes we take the long way round. So seems you just needed a little push to get back on the chosen path.  :coffee2: :thumb: Chester

Morning Michael, I certainly recall your name, perhaps from another forum, regardless, welcome back to The Coffee Forum. Good luck with your studies and keep up the good work on your Bezzera. :)
  • Being the boss isn't for everyone and managing staff can be difficult at times.    At least you realised it wasn't for you early on and chose a new path.  So many people just put up and shut up and keep going and them many years down the track realise it's not going anywhere or making them happy. [emoji6] Good to see you back here to say hi again!
  • Wonderful to see you back MW!  We've all suffered dodgy parish coffee in our lives so your coffee skills will do you and your parishioners proud someday soon.
  • Hi all, new here and reasonably new to coffee. I am currently plugging away with DeLonghi Icona, laugh and snigger if you must, get it out of your systems  and a Smart Grinder Pro. However....an upgrade is in the not too distant future, I just need a few more $$ and more importantly I need to decide once and for all what I want so until then I'll keep on keeping on with the Icona  :P. I look forward to nosing about. Sue :).
  • G'Day Sue, Welcome to the Coffee Forum. I can assure you no one will laugh or snigger, we've all been through a similar learning experience. Have a look around and don't be afraid to ask questions, we're a small and friendly band. Just noticed in your profile, your from SA, what part of the state do you live? we're up at Moonta. :)
  • Hi Dry bean and thanks for your reply. If no-one sniggers I may as well mention Master 16s coughDolceGustocough then as well  :D. In all seriousness a nice shiny piece of stainless steel is planned, I just need to work out what I want but I am getting there.....slowly. I am almost on the Fleurieu Peninsula in the Woodcroft/Reynella area  :).
